Wired News invokes The Prisoner to describe the planned panopticon community of Ayers Island in Maine, where ubiquitous cameras will be linked to an artifical intelligence system that decides which visitors need a closer look.

Thoreau: They probably are ignoring it. In any case, I can't do much to influence the developers. I can point out a potential obscuring of the distinction between governmental and private activity to Reason readers.

When a kid walks through a candy store, the clerk has an obligation to watch him. People have a right to know anything they have a right to observe. People who do not want to be "spied on" should go home and close the curtains.
Some of this "Privacy" shit comes perilously close to telling me I am unfriendly and anti-social for locking my house and car.
    Sheesh!!!

  6. The Lonewacko Blog   21 years ago

I'll have to investigate this later, but their page has a 'grants' link, and their photos page has a picture of their president with a U.S. Senator. And, they're partnering with UMaine. This doesn't look too much like a "private development" to me.

Plus: "Markowsky has used funds from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up Ayers Island... His company is now seeking funds from the Department of Homeland Security to help pay for the Intelligent Island system."

Consider this: "But Markowsky said participation by members of the public will be essential to the success of the Intelligent Island project. Signs will inform visitors they are being monitored."

If reason pays for it, I'll go to Maine and try to get people not to visit the island.

From "The Chimes of Big Ben":

Number 6: "Has it ever occured to you that you are as much a prisoner as I am?"

Number 2: "My dear chap, of course! I know too much. We are both lifers. I am definately an optimist. That's why it doesn't matter who Number One is. It doesn't matter which side runs the village."

Number 6: "It's run by one side or the other?"

Number 2: "Oh, certainly. But both sides are becoming identical. What in fact has been created? An international community. A perfect blueprint for world order. When the sides facing each other suddenly realize they are looking in a mirror, they will see that this is the pattern for the future."

Number 6: "The whole earth as the Village?"

Number 2: "That is my hope!"

You know, Julian, stirring up controversy concerning reasonable and well-intended efforts to increase security in these dangerous times is ... well, it's positively unmutual!

  10. garym   21 years ago

It's a private development. If you don't like it, you don't have to go there.

This is my most favorite picture ever:

  12. Mark Fox   21 years ago

garym: True. Those who choose to go to The Village self-select for less unmutual tendencies. Then somebody does a study that shows places with cameras have fewer problems (or at least fewer which can be seen), and that study is used as justification for putting an All Seeing Eye up everyone's ass. As the Village's boundaries expand, our option to "not go there" diminishes. Thus, it seems worthwhile to keep an eye on this experiment.

If they're using artificial intelligence, it means it's a boondoggle.

  14. thoreau   21 years ago

It's a private development. If they don't like the criticism they can ignore it. If they don't like that option, too bad for them.
