Ooo neat! A story on my very backyard. I went to college in Sarasota.

For some reason it never struck me as odd or unique that there’s a giant community of people that look like they just stepped out of the 18th century. Or that, despite appearances, they blend in perfectly with the rest of the area.

I think it might say more for Florida than it does for the Amish.

The Amish don’t bug anybody and they make damn good pretzels. I say we keep them.

I just got back from a trip to Lancaster. I didn’t know this before, but the Amish aren’t anti-electricity, they’re anti-wires, because they don’t want to be physically connected to the outside world. But they do use generators, cellphones, and laptop computers. They essentially presaged the idea of the wireless society, which used to seem very 19th century but is now very much embraced by the 21st century.

As one who lives right in the thick of Amish country (Lancaster, PA), and deals with Amish folks regularly at work, I can say that nothing about the Amish surprises me anymore.

I think what tore it for me was the time a conversation with an Amishman was interrupted by a call on HIS cell phone.

What a delightful article! The reporter could have gone for a condescending joke at the Amish’s expense, but instead portrayed them with affection and dignity. Well done, touching and heartwarming.
