Down in Orange County, the Berkeley of the right, the loopy ex-congressman Bob Dornan is running against the ex-libertarian ex-hippie ex-folksinger incumbent Rep. Dana Rohrabacher. A lot of mud is getting slung, not least in this surreal interview with Dornan published in FrontPage today.

So America has its own version of le Pen; I feel better. 🙂

  2. mike   21 years ago

Whoaaaa. Now if that kind of debate between the candidates doesn't get voters out, nothing will. And here I'm sleeping through debates over who's going to spend the most on what unfunded handout.

  3. thoreau   21 years ago

Wow, Bob Dornan is even crazier than I thought.

I remember when Loretta Sanchez beat him. He insisted that illegal aliens had voted for her. Now, I know that many people on this forum are sympathetic to such allegations, but Bob Dornan isn't exactly a credible source. All I can say is that maybe we should grant citizenship to anybody who would risk arrest to vote Dornan out of office 😉

    (Yes, that was a joke.)

  4. Jason Ligon   21 years ago

    JB:

Alas, I think we have more le Pens than you guys. It was at one point useful to have a goodly number of Puritans in our demographics. Not so sure now ...

  5. Chris Puzak   21 years ago

That interview was almost as weird as the time I turned on Mystery Science Theater 3000 and realized that Bob Dornan was the star of the movie they were watching.

  6. Argyles   21 years ago

I know which MST3K featured Dornan; he was the pixie trying to get schoolkids to join the band (and rent an instrument from Conn). Or maybe I'm just being whimsical.

  7. joe   21 years ago

Yes, Bob, Saddam Hussein invented the concept of sequentially numbered bills.

I didn't think is possible for Frontpage to sink any lower in my estimation, but with questions like " What kind of person does one have to be to make such groundless accusations? What kind of integrity can such a person have?" they've gone beyond political lunacy in Pravda territory. They sound like the "defense" attorney in a Stalinist show trial.

  8. thoreau   21 years ago

I like Dornan's comment that the Muslim terrorists can infiltrate the gov't better than the Soviets could because they're offering 72 virgins in heaven. Yeah, there's a whole bunch of closet Wahabbists working in our government. Right.

Given the current paranoia about gay marriage, I'm surprised he hasn't offered any theories about massive gay infiltration of our government: "The gays offer immediate sexual gratification. They approach people with offers of oral sex in exchange for cooperation on their filthy agenda. They're driving a really hard bargain in their efforts to penetrate the inner sanctum of American government. And once they've drafted a covert agent in their battle to remove the stigma from homosexuality, the agent is trapped in their scheme by a fear of being outed and stigmatized. He has to keep bending over backwards to aid their agenda."

And yes, the innuendos were intentional, not to mention the contradiction of "...their battle to remove the stigma...fear of being outed and stigmatized."

If the allegations he is asserting are right or having any basis in fact -- shouldn't Rohrbacher be tried for treason and not defeated at the ballot box? Obviously Dornan is nuts -- the Republican Partry hates him so -- they backed Loretta Sanchez during the voting fraud investigation...

  10. The Lonewacko Blog   21 years ago

" remember when Loretta Sanchez beat him. He insisted that illegal aliens had voted for her."

    From this:

After the election, it was discovered that supporters of Sanchez had allegedly illegally registered non-citizens to vote for Sanchez... A congressional investigation was launched, uncovering startling information. One of Sanchez's staffers admitted in sworn testimony that the Sanchez campaign encouraged illegal voter registration. The radical Hispanic organization Hermandad Mexicana Nacional was investigated by the county and state for election fraud. Hermandad had registered 721 non-citizens, 442 of whom voted in the election. The head of Hermandad was convinced he would "be indicted on hundreds of felonies." More corruption was discovered when Sanchez's husband was caught and arrested for stealing Dornan signs.

I wouldn't take election fraud so cavalierly. Unless you want Fox, the Mexican elites, and Univision to have a say in who's elected.

Bob Dornan is strange even to the Republicans in Orange County. And the Republican Party he left behind has changed since he was there.

When he lost his election, Prop 187 was a good idea to most Republicans; now, the same guys who championed Prop 187 are backing Bush's proposal to give visas to illegal workers.

Unfortunatly for Mr. Dornan, being a politician doesn't prepare you for anything else. It's like being a college athlete; no one in the ofice is going to care how fast you can run the 40.

Or like graduating from a Madrasa.

So what are lifetime politicians supposed to do once they retire?

Maybe we should have a special home for career politicians like him, a place where they can spend the rest of their lives in a supervised environment. Then they won't be able to hurt themselves or bother us anymore.

Of course it would all have to be paid for by private donations. Who will be the first to contribute?

P.S. The crazy bastard was voted out by a combination of gerrymandering and votes by illegal aliens.

  12. Gene Berkman   21 years ago

I have known Dana Rohrabacher since 1969 - we were involved in Young Americans for Freedom at the time, and Dana was an activist libertarian for several years. I have met Bob Dornan on several occasions.

Yes, Dornan is crazy and Dana will no doubt triumph in the primary. But Dornan is correct that Dana makes things up about himself. Dana has an exaggerated sense of his own importance which has led him to betray his stated principles on more than one occassion.

Dana Rohrabacher is one of the better Republicans in Congress, and this is why I am glad I am not a Republican.

  13. Steve in CO   21 years ago

    Jean,

Wasn't Le Pen the bastard who ordered to troops to kill the Chinese students in T-Square, in 1989? If Pen isn't dead, he should be ... and thank goodness Dornan will never have that kind of power.

    Regards,

    Steve

  14. SPUR   21 years ago

    "Jean,

    Regards,

    Steve"

Le Pen is a French bastard that got famous murdering a lot of Algerians in the 50s and 60s and runs an extreme nationalist anti-immigrant party -- he almost won the French presidency a year or so back, much to the chagrin of many French, especially those who call our democracy a fraud and a police state.

You're probably thinking of DungzouPING the former Chinese brutal dictator dude.

  15. Jean Bart   21 years ago

    SPUR,

"Le Pen is a French bastard that got famous murdering a lot of Algerians in the 50s and 60s..."

Or so he says; much of what he says of his history is a fabrication.

"...and runs an extreme nationalist anti-immigrant party..."

    Don't forget racist, anti-semetic, etc.

"...he almost won the French presidency a year or so back, much to the chagrin of many French, especially those who call our democracy a fraud and a police state."

If you call 17% of the vote in the second round "almost won" sure... 🙂 Indeed, in the Parliamentary vote that followed that election, his party (National Front) did not win a single seat. What was embarressing was that he made it into the second-round of the Presidential voting, not that he almost won the election.

  16. Shultz   21 years ago

Le Pen is the founder and leader of the National Front, an unapologeticly Fascist party in France that continues to advocate the removal of minorities from France.

Dornan is a crazy bastard, sure thing. But he's not a Fascist.

  17. Dave Potts   21 years ago

From Greenhut's editorial: "Rohrabacher supports most aspects of the Patriot Act, opposed ending the embargo on Iraq and wants tighter immigration controls..."

Makes me feel sorry for people who have to choose between these two nutcases. I guess the key word when describing Rohrabacher should be FORMER Libertarian. Not exactly someone worth sticking up for in my view.

  18. Dan   21 years ago

So America has its own version of le Pen; I feel better.

America's version of le Pen is Pat Buchanan; Dornan is just a crazy son of a bitch.

He insisted that illegal aliens had voted for her.

They did. Registering illegal aliens to vote is a pretty standard tactic here in California. This is why the local Democratic party has pushed hard for motor-voter acts, licenses for illegal immigrants, and a ban on confirming residency at polling locations.

Where Dornan was mistaken is in blaming the illegal voters for his loss. He lost because he was obviously out to lunch; plenty of moderates, and not a few conservatives, stayed away from him.

  19. joe   21 years ago

I think there was a Le Pen (pronounced Lee Pen) in the Chinese government in 89. Jean-Marie Le Pen, pronounced like a French name, is the leader of a minor party in France. So Steve's not totally out to lunch.

    But damn that's funny.

  20. Jean Bart   21 years ago

Jean-Marie le Pen is a swine.

My comparison was not about their political views, so much as their mental states.

  21. Franklin Harris   21 years ago

"Dana Rohrabacher is one of the better Republicans in Congress, and this is why I am glad I am not a Republican."

    Priceless, Gene.

And for the record: Bob Dornan is a grade-A wingnut.

  22. dkaragozian   21 years ago

The Premier of Communist China at the time of the Tienammen Square Massacre was Li Ping.

  23. thoreau   21 years ago

I suspect that Jean Marie Le Pen has a lot in common with Li Peng and the rest of the Communister leadership in China...

  24. dhex   21 years ago

hey, anyone got the skinny on frontpage? it's fox news on acid!

whoa, check out the freaky america-haters!
