The latest Pew Internet & American Life Project survey is out, and not surprisingly, it finds that Net usage is leveling off at about 63 percent of the population. This is what you would expect to happen with any new technology: rapid growth, consolidation, eventual ubiquity.

This pattern has stirred old worries that the Net is too expensive or too confusing for everyone to partake. But staying unwired now may be the rational choice for some folks, even if academics and wonks pronounce the Net "indispensable"—for academics and wonks.
