  1. not to revive the strom thurmond/robert byrd thread, but i want to point out that this:

    What a convenient time for you to discover that “states rights” is always a code for racism.

    … was one of the silliest things i’ve yet heard said here — and that the current article is why. perhaps joe said this in the heat of the moment, but i think it behooves us all to understand that states rights — or, in the context of the last 70 years, the limitation of the massive growth of federal power — can have a multitude of benefits to anyone who would rather be free.
