Trotting On
Christopher Hitchens' fans and detractors alike should enjoy his most recent interview, published last week in the right-wing webzine FrontPage. In the course of the conversation he both deserts and defends the left; he says nice things about the neoconservatives and then gives an analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that no neocon would embrace. The exchange makes it even harder to pigeonhole the man, a fact that should please him: as he says at one point, "The only real radicalism in our time will come as it always has -- from people who insist on thinking for themselves and who reject party-mindedness." On that much, at least, I can agree with him.
Meanwhile, another freethinking ex-Trotskyist -- novelist Ken MacLeod -- has written an engaging critique of the leftist argument for war that Hitchens and others espouse.

Well that certainly is even-handed of him. How very "fair and balanced" even. The rub comes in this: posturing is interesting and clever, but it doesn't accomplish much work. Parties were formed so that legislative ruling bodies could efficiently organize the resources of said party.
Parties get things done.
Ken MacLeod is an ex-Trotskyist?
I thought he was still a card-carrying member of the Fourth International, or at least of Wyoming Knott's Fifth International...
yeah, fuck principles!
I don't mind the ideological change of heart from Mr. Hitchens;it's that his writing style has gone flabby overnight. You could switch his byline with Howard Fineman's on a lot of recent pieces, and no one would be the wiser. His latest bit of hack work for Vanity Fair on Indonesia has a horribly cliched beginning and some soggy prose that the old Hitchens would never have used.

I know what you mean. Like Mark Steyn, Hitchens is an ordinarily very talented writer whose prose has sometimes suffered as he spreads himself too thin.
He still has his good days, though.
You have more good days than either of those guys, Jesse
So MacLeod is saying that war will continue, and he won't support one because all wars are bad, and he'd rather support the anti-war movement which will hopefully one day get large enough to stop any future wars. It doesn't matter whether a particular war is just or not.
Sounds suspiciously like the rationalization of someone who'd rather continue to identify with his party of choice. Or maybe an omlettes and eggs argument.
Why doesn't it matter whether the war his future larger anti-war coalition stops is just? Ultimatly, he's just saying "war is bad, and that's all there is to it," without answering the pro-war left's justifications for it.
"A real leftists is anti-war, and I don't listen to non-leftists."
Alright, I'll bite. What's engaging about MacLeod's critique? Aside from casting the US government in a bad light, what's a libertarian who doesn't have fond memories-from-afar of the USSR to get from reading this essay, aside from creeped out by the writer?
Isn't Hitchens the schmuck who went after Mother Theresa?
yeah, he went after that twisted sadist and that fucktard kissinger too. 🙂
