Howard Dean is apparently asking his supporters to vote on whether he should accept or reject public financing for his presidential campaign. If he says "no thanks," writes Cato's John Samples, that "could sound the death knell for a useless system" of taxpayer-funded politicking.

American taxpayers have spent $2 billion on presidential public funding since 1976. They have received little for their money.
