Too Much Information

Declan McCullagh writes on this administration's criticism-evasion strategy: Pull documents from the web to ensure that there's nothing to criticize. There is at least one inaccuracy in the piece, though: Maybe army.mil did at some point have its "plug pulled," as he says, but it's back up now.

Maybe the government is withholding too much information -- although as a former intelligence guy myself, I've got to say that I've flinched more than once at what was getting published. You'd be amazed at what you can find, or what an experienced analyst can make from it.

But the notion that they suppressed army.mil is nuts. That's the Army's main public site: it would be as stupid to do that as it would be for Microsoft to kill off microsoft.com. It's much more likely army.mil was down for a short while for technical reasons.
