Pumping Irony

|

As I sat bleary-eyed at 1:41 AM EST listening to an impossibly broad-chested man declare he was an "out-sidah," I couldn't help but notice that arrayed behind him, with their fulsome smiles and die-cast cheekbones, was an entire wing of an American political dynasty.

  1. I don’t think he’s dumb. But would you hire him to fix your transmission?

  2. I would partner with him for a business deal. He has objective proof that he has created value in this world, unlike the slimeball professional conmen who have not once contributed as private citizens.

  3. Funny how you just channeled my exact thoughts completely!

    Kennedy! Kennedy! Kennedy!

    LOL!

And wasn’t it JFK Jr who quipped that his father would probably be a Republican today?

    Curious thoughts.

  4. “I don’t think he’s dumb. But would you hire him to fix your transmission?”

No, but fixing a tranny requires specific technical knowledge. Being a Gov requires a much more generalized skill set. Frankly, with Arnold’s buisness, movie, and related experience, I think he will do fine.

  5. “And wasn’t it JFK Jr who quipped that his father would probably be a Republican today?”

Joe Kennedy told Nixon that they would back him if Jack lost the primary. Jack didn’t loose the primary, and Nixon & Jack’s friendship was basically ended by the take-no-prisoners Kennedy approach to the campaign. Nixon was expecting a gentleman’s contest. I tend to think this experience resulted in Nixon’s political paranoia and Watergate.

  6. I’m no fan of the Kennedys (Hitchens once called Joe Kennedy, “a bootlegger and a bootlicker”)
But the Shrivers can hold their heads high…the Special Olympics is a tremendous, and moral, accomplishment.

Arnold’s an outsider in that 30 years ago he was another steakhead bodybuilder on Venice Beach.

  7. So he’s bragging that he has no idea what he’s doing?

  8. By my Calendar we’re still on EDT until the night of October 25th/26th. I’m not sure if that makes it earlier or later than Jeff thought.

And, might I add, there’s a rich American tradition of bragging that you have no idea what you’re doing. It’s practically a cornerstone of the republic.

  9. So he’s bragging that he has no idea what he’s doing?

I think he’s bragging that he is not a smarmy, corrupt parasite.

  10. This means I have to see Arnie’s wife Skeletor on TV more. Yuck.

  11. They just don’t make outsiders like they used to. If he’s an outsider, I must be an excommunicate.

  12. joe – think of it this way. If someone held a gun to my head and asked me to construct a bomb to commit some terrorist act, I would probably explain to that someone (as calmly and rationally as I could) that I have no idea what I’m doing. And I think most would agree, the fact that I would have the first clue how to build that bomb is a good and virtuous thing.

It’s the same way with politics in California (and in Washington, DC, for that matter). The less one knows about it, the more qualified one is to hold office. A bit of a paradox, I suppose. I don’t want to elect anyone who has had anything to do with Gray Davis or (puke) GWBush. Gray and GW both have been in politics so long they don’t know what to do or say outside of their own focus-group-created, marketing/PR gimmick, scripted sound-byte speeches. Neither one would know reality if it smacked him upside the head. Being in politics (especially bitter partisan politics, which is both Gray and GW’s specialty) will do that to you after awhile.

  13. Hey, let’s not even give the guy a chance. Let’s instead push the collectivist meme of harping on his race/gender/family/friendships/etc.

I am sure that Arnie had a buddy who know a guy who went to school with a guy who knew Rumsfield. Hence he is also a dreaded Neocon.

But also don’t forget that Arnie has not been on the take for the last 30 years, which means he is unqualified. He is also GOP so he must be dumb like Low-IQ Shrub. Joe and the Dixie Chicks say so!

I can’t understand why a person will take a year to write a novel when he can easily buy one for a few dollars.
