    good column Matt

I've been thinking the same thing -- that this might a watershed year. I'm wondering if 2003 could be to gay rights what 1963 was to civil rights. Have we reached a watershed, critical mass of some kind, or is it just the same rate of change seen from further along?

Ironic... The National Post is Canada's more right-leaning national newspaper. It's editorials are usually filled with opinions against gay marriage. We'll see what kind of response this gets from the readers.

"Do you want to live forever?"

  8. Looking Ahead   22 years ago

You think this is a watershed year? Wait until 2008. Dems out GOP presidential candidate Condoleeza Rice. For the most part, no one cares, and she is elected president. President Rice is our first female, first black, and first gay president, and she's a republican. Several dozen heads burst in various locations around the country, and then life goes on.

Until 2032 when the first atheist president is elected, but that's an entirely different story.

God knows atheists are the most despised group of all minorities... I think people would rather elect child molesting bishops.

Is this typical libertarian commentary or what? A movie actor who as best one can tell knows nothing about anything about the California government runs for governor at a time when the state is facing the worst fiscal crisis in its history. So naturally the key issue is the appeal of his physique to male homosexuals.

I'll bet he's smoked marijuana too! Yep, this guy is pretty close to being a libertarian hero.

  11. Looking Ahead   22 years ago

In a recent Pew Research poll, 41% of people polled said they have reasons not to vote for some one who is an atheist. By comparison, muslim was 31%, evangelical 20%, catholic 15%, and jewish 14%. It didn't have gay, but similar polls I've seen put it around 30% as well.

I'm surprised that discussions of Arnold's alleged anti-gay bias haven't included reports of his speech pumping up the Republican Convention in which he denigrated the pack of Democratic candidates as "a bunch of girly-men."

  13. tim   22 years ago

Asmile, I think that's a joking reference to the Schwarzenegger parody characters Hans & Franz on SNL-"girlymen" being one of their catchphrases. Although, in this era when nobody appears able to take a joke about anything, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody does end up making a stink about it.

    Black Lotus, Stygian, the best!

    It better not be hagga.

I would sell hagga to a slayer such as you?

  16. Steve   22 years ago

    zathras,
I hate to spout a hack cliche, but the people who got California into this mess know a lot about state government. I have a hard time imagining how Arnold would have been a worse governor than Davis. What, would we have a $38 kagillion-zillion deficit, instead of just $38 billion?
