Well la-de-da, another bozo who doesn't think that there is anything wrong with coddling the ILLEGAL immigrants (PC term=undocumented immigrants) who are flooding across the border.

The Mexican politicos make no bones about this being an invasion with the eventual intent to reverse the loss of land suffered in the 19th century. Baja California will extend to Oregon, New Mexico will be just Mexico, etc.

And just EXCUSE THE HELL OUT OF ME that ILLEGAL immigrants can't vote and have trouble getting health care that they will never be pay for.

What about just taking care of those immigrants who follow the laws, as an incentive for law-following generally?

Genius Grant? Really? There is such a thing? My IQ has been measured at 147*. How do I get my money?

I read the article and the book review, and I have to think that the 'Genius Grant' must be ironic -- that's it, isn't it? They don't give them to astrophysicists, but to astrologers; not to mathematicians, but to numerologists. That's the only explanation that comes to mind for giving this Davis character a 'Genius Grant'.

    * - that was the score on that test on that day; the number has relatively little practical use or significance

Wait a minute --- 'genius' means 'spirit' in Latin -- do they give these grants to the possessed? It's all becoming clearer........

    From Nick's review:
"the engineering mentality posits a particular vision of utopia and declares anything short of that an utter disaster."

    Hmmmmm....

The Genius Grant is given to an idiot in the hope that said idiot will become a genius. It's rather like throwing money at government schools. No success as yet....

That Gillespie article was strong on the ad-homenim, weak on ideas. He seems to see that the facts lead to conclusions that are at odds with what he want to see, and proceeds to sneer at the facts. Are there genuine ecological threats facing Los Angeles? Could better urban design have prevented some of the problems the city's facing? Not really knowing enough about the issues to draw an informed conclusion, he decides that the answer HAS to be "no," because that's what's best for his political movement.

The review of "Ecology of Fear" reads like one of those Russian "scientific" papers applying dialectical materialism to genetics.

    Joe,

I re-read Gillespie's article and I just don't see your "strong on the ad-homenim, weak on ideas" claim as having any real traction. Does Gillespie criticize Davis and his style? Yes. Does this constitute 'ad hominem' attack? No.

Also, the article was a book review, and it is not incumbent on the author to present a wonderful new vision that will solve all the world's problems. His only job in the review is to critique the book, and by extension, its author, which he does.

    just my two cents

Whoever coined the term "engineering mentality" could not have been an engineer and clearly has no idea what he/she is talking about. City planners are bureaucrats, not engineers. Pretty insulting, really.

....although not as insulting as when your fellow engineers accuse you of being a scientist.....;)
