From the Mailbag
Reader Russ Dewey passes along this story from semi-occupied Afghanistan, where two journalists may soon be put to death for blasphemy.
He also informs me that in Illinois, an anti-smoking law is having the unintended effect of kicking kids out of a bowling alley.
Which doesn't sound so bad, when you compare it to being fatwa'd in Kabul. But I'm against it anyway.

It's stories like this that make me greatful to be an american. (First Amendment, I Loves you).
However- "The fatwa department of Afghanistan's supreme court..."
THE FATWA DEPARTMENT? Divine Pronouncements by Government bureaucracy?
Further, if their constitution demands secular justice, then WTF does their Supreme Court do? (It seems obvious that a Supreme Court devoted to their constitution wouldn't have a FATWA DEPARTMENT).
Excuse me while I try to re-attach my jaw.
"The Islamic Transitional Government of Afghanistan is obliged to give the death penalty to the people who have abused or made fun of Islam"
Islam is gay.
"Showing humans as evolving from apes is against the Koran, the ruling said."
This statement leaves the typical impression that humans evolved from modern apes. This is simply incorrect. Humans and apes evolved divergently from a common primate ancestor.
Oh shit! I'm a condemned man now!
I was wondering why Florida's statewide smoking ban in establishments that serve food has an exemption for bowling alleys. It's for the children. It gives the 13% of last year's students who will be repeating third grade next year in the state's new 11-grade school system a place to go where they can kick back and smoke.
"Showing humans as evolving from apes is against the Koran, the ruling said."
Please cast the religous shackles from the wrists of human advancement!
Really? Which part of the Koran is that, anyway?
I'm guessing their appeals process leaves something to be desired.
All Hail the Anti-smoking Nanny State!
