A nice site with background on Guy Fawkes:

And Parliament's page on why people wanted to blow them up:

It's a fun holiday, kinda like the backyard fireworks of the 4th with the added bonus of burning scarecrows on really big fires.
Ya know, when I've gone to bars here in Michigan on Cinco de Mayo, I haven't seen many Mexicans either...
Maybe, just maybe, the few native Frenchpeople in NYC don't want to hang out with a bunch of Americans celebrating a holiday they probably don't understand. Just an opinion...
For orthodox libertarians, there's a great Rush song called "Bastille Day." Download it and enjoy.
I can't wait until Guy Fawkes day. I love buring effigies of people. Remember, remember the 5th of November everyone!
I know I could just Google this question, but I'm lazy; remind me, who was Guy Fawkes?
Plus, the Reason comment boards are such an authoritative source of information...
Remember remember the fifth of November,
the gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.
