Who Wants to be a Governor?
Writing at The Volokh Conspiracy, Russell Korobkin argues that California?s bizarre, ever-more-likely recall election to replace hated governor Gray Davis has such uniquely low barriers to entry -- only costs $3,500 and a handful of signatures to get on a crowded, winner-take-all ballot -- that we could be on the verge of a ?Jesse Ventura moment.? He then calls for nominees:
[W]hat if thoughtful people interested in public policy, with a range of political perspectives, not beholden to big-donor special interests, could agree (via the use of modern communication tools like the internet) on a smart non-politician to support for governor?
Let the nominations begin! Tony Pierce has my early support.

Clint Eastwood.
Former Mayors rule!
Anyone know where Mike Curb is nowadays? Just asking....
It's too bad Ventura's gone...if Arnie got elected governor of Cali while Jesse was still in, then a significant portion of the country would have been run by the cast of Predator.
If you can't have good government, it might as well kick ass.
Carl Weathers for Senate!
Matt: Your entry's title makes me wonder whether we should chuck this whole namby-pamby recall business and just select our governors via game shows.
I nominate FuglyTheKlown
And, BTW, even if Davis resigns, the recall will still apparently go on, even though there's some concern over the meaning of when the recall is "filed."
i don't get it.
whois tonypierce?
Tony Pierce, whozzat?

Hey, Matt! SOMEBODY'S going to be Governor of California, and you know it. So why don't YOU run? (With the Mexican population the way it stands now, you're bound to get the vote.)
Ron Jeremy for Governor!
Harry Jeremy for Governor!
(Harry is Ron's son.)
Younger phalli stand a better chance.
'Case you're wondering, he was named after his father's (gray) chest.
Arianna Huffington
Fuck Carl Weathers. I want The Predator as my senator. I wonder what his position on school choice is.
"Office holders insecure in their power are more likely to repress their enemies and whip up support-gaining crusades."
Joe, stop it! You're scaring us! (Brrrr!)
I nominate Arizona's Governor Janet Napolitano for the office of Governor of California.
This is good stuff.
First of all, Davis deserves it. He's just a smarmy, unprincipled glad-hander, a West Coast Clinton.
And the threshold for starting one of these actions is so low that, now it's caught the public imagination, it may be attempted against every sitting California governor from now on. Cali may go through as many executives as Argentina. This procedure needs to be adopted in other states. Combined with the definite possibility that most presidents from now on will face an impeachment attempt, this kind of thing could paralyze government. So what's the bad side? I can't think of one.
It's nice to think about, anyway.
Please, please, please let there be a Jerry Brown/Jello Biafra runoff. I wanna watch that debate.
California Uber Alles!
I nominate no one.
(California will be better off.)
Kevin,
Office holders insecure in their power are more likely to repress their enemies and whip up support-gaining crusades.
Jesse,
Your game show idea is similar to Mencken's idea for selecting legislators You "won" a legislative seat much like being called for jury duty.
I don't know about this whole recall thing, but at some point the voters should be allowed to fire their "chosen" people any time, "terms" shouldn't be sacred except as a maximum. A penalty for early withdrawal is what the free market generall calls it. Davis gets paid his whole term's salary, but he can be un-elected at any time.
The funny thing is ... OK, one of the funny things is, Davis at one time was mulling a run for president of the United States.
I vote for the guy from "The Shield."
So is Jello Biafra running for governor or not?
He could earn back the entry fee from selling his spoken word albums (which might actually get him elected). Wouldn't that be a hoot! Somebody needs to get him in gear!
What is the Salary of Governor of California
