The Hawk's Left Wing
Good piece by Joshua Micah Marshall on the recent effort by the Social Democrats, USA, a party of pro-war left intellectuals, to make themselves a more prominent political factor. The Social Democrats are actually descended from Eugene Debs' movement; the group split from anti-war socialists during Vietnam. Now, the debate over the response to Islamist terror is reinvigorating the movement.
In Marshall's paraphrase of the group's view, "the just-completed invasion of Iraq was not only compatible with a revived democratic and internationalist center-left, but … any opposition to it was in fact a cardinal error." At a recent DC gathering, for example, one leftist academic criticized Germany's antiwar left for a "lack of complete understanding of armed antifascism." The centerpiece of that gathering was a debate over Paul Berman's book, Terror and Liberalism. Berman (who was there) argues "that the twin 'Muslim totalitarianisms' of radical Islamism and Baathism are not only similar in form but also share a common history" with earlier totalitarianisms.
Social Democrats are not seeking to become a mass movement so much as to exert influence, neocon-style, on Democrats. Marshall speculates that "this could be a movement with as much of a future as a past."

This group offers very little ideologicaly of a redeeming nature. Berman's contention that:
"radical Islamism and Baathism are not only similar in form but also share a common history with these earlier totalitarianisms." seems credible but snce the Social Democrats USA are so wedded to the use of government force as a policy tool one should not expect anything but a military
approach here. Don't anticipate a free trade tact for the mid-east from these folks. They don't
understand capitalism. In fact, one can see them pushing for trade restrictions to end "Muslim Totalitarianisms" which only increase the pressures for military "solutions". It will probably not occurr to the S.D. USA to point to the free enterprise oriented Dubai ( sort of an Arab Hong Kong) of the U.A.E. as an Arab country that the other nations in the mid-east including Israel would do well to emulate. To their credit though, the Social Democrats USA will likley not show the same patience with Ariel Sharon as the Neo-Cons do when he does things like push for the legalization of discrimination against Arab Israelis in housing on government land. Also while the S.D. USA are advocating "democratizing Wilsonianism" approach for some of the worlds despots, do you think these folks will turn their attention to Cuba? Don't hold your breath. So, they want a an agressive big government approach both at home and abraod. How do I say it best? Gag me with a spoon! At least the Neo-Cons will have some where to go when they wearout their welcome with the conservatives (as seems to be happening). Maybe Bill Bennet will find more sympathy for his hyper-gambling.
One thing these guys should do, if they want to get anywhere, is change their name. "Social Democrats, USA" sounds a little too Red, if you ask me.
No.
Test: It didn't put my name on the last post.

an interesting read!
one aspect of politics that is interesting is the comparison between these social dems and neo-cons. the lines about the discussion that was, ..."deeply ideological, increasingly focused on foreign policy, civil society and political evil" could apply to the NRO crowd. another one that could come from that camp: "[the soc. dem. mov't] ...assists the private economy ? even protecting it from its own excesses" sounds like the paternalistic concerns for our souls or morality espoused by such warriors as bill bennett. (but third paragraph from the end -- neocons were "unwilling to go" all the way.)
if this group becomes as powerful, engaged, aware, and savy as the neo-cons, politics could become quite interesting indeed!
(and for all of those who immediately feel that being against the NRO-style (or empower america) of conservativism must make someone antisemitic, please explain that one to me)
the one part that seems to be missing is the soc dem statement on nationalism. would there be a pat buchanan-style of nationalism? or what?
have a great day, all!

neocon is a stupid word:
http://www.nationalreview.com/goldberg/goldberg051603.asp
and yes some do use it as anti-semitic slur
moral of the story - these labels mean jack squat!
hey Anon!
ugh! to whomever uses that term, "neocon" as an antisemitic slur: fuck you. take that bullshit back to the 30s in germany. that's not welcome. all racists can follow, too. and school bullies. you're in the same boat... and we're going after it...
since many don't like that term, "neocon", what is a good description of the political view that is for government looking out for our virtues and morals. where the gov't can sometimes be in the bedroom, where there is a (blind?) strong support for israel, supporting of the nationalism shown by the us recently (to separate from pat buchanan), etc.), e.g., boycott of france, etc. etc. etc.?
oftentimes, i hear liberals get annoyed that they're lumped into the "liberal" camp by the rest of us; many on the christian right don't like when they're lumped in with the godless libertarians, etc., but what's the big deal?
just as liberalism isn't a monolith, libertarians most certainly can't be easily boxed, there is some sort of set of political views that need a shorthand. to be used neutrally. to show a certain broader-brush similarity without stereotyping or without eliciting the "antisemitic" charge. that's as impossible to wipe off as is a "racism" charge...
from the NRO article, (my least favorite) jonah, does point how the term "neocon" is thrown around pejoratively. just as he throws around "liberal" and how many others throw around "politically correct". the def as a starting point, the one citing the trots seems non-negative, non-pejorative. and a fair starting point. just to climb up, then to kick away.
like rush l. throws out insults all the time, but he doesn't seem to like being called names. bill o'reilley pretends to be anti spin, yet he's more blatantly spin than most on this side of the NY Times... so, the weekly std, fox news, nro, etc., do have flawed arguments if you don't buy into the premises, etc., but keep 'em coming. more info, more thought out there, usually, the better. if you don't like, don't read. but otherwise, what's the alternative? where we all believe in global warming, the evils of straight white males? ugh. that's bad.
and i still object to the thought that anybody who can't stand the weekly standard, the NRO, thinks jonah is not his cup of tea, doesn't like larry miller, etc., all of a sudden is an "anti semite".
i was in college in the late 80s to early 90s, at a peak of the politically correct movement, and when i read the NRO or weekly std., i find those to be redolent of the PC rhetoric, just the opposite of the coin.
so, while it may be a flawed term, i certainly don't see while many in that camp are so sensitive about it, and are so quick on the draw to throw out anti-semitism. what -- culturally, the us has a ton in common with, what, UK, israel, maybe some central europe...
but in so many ways, the us and israel are so strongly culturally linked, there will be a natural defense, a mutual support that happen quite naturally. and while many lefties seem to apologize for everything the PLO does, criticism of sharon or of my favorite public speaker, Benjamin Netanyhu (man, that guy is awesome!) isn't antisemitism.
just as long as the terrorists realize that our criticisms stop whenever they blow up something. just as our bickering stops at our borders, same with our special relationship with israel. critical is not anti. (and it's not the israelis on the bus that are making the policies, even though they do vote. but they're the ones getting the terror. that shouldn't be)
hmmmmm,

Bible says: "Because people who are well don't need a doctor! Its the sick people who do!" Was Jesus' reply." (Matthew 9:12)
Moses & Jonah don't want to go there, but our mighty Lord uses them to serve His kingdom. Bible Says: "And now I have heard the groanings of the people of Israel, in slavery now to the Egyptians, and I remember my promise." (Exodus 6:5)
Praise the Lord! that we are serving the same Lord of Israel and we believe that He will also save our people. Its very easy for you to minister, because this is not a new thing for you to ministering the people.
We are serving in Pakistan where Christian being a poor community has to face lot of difficulties. Majority of Christian men are addicted or jobless and their wives are compel to work in Muslims houses to earn something for their children due to un skillness they work as a housemaid. Unfortunately their pay is not sufficient to meet their needs but most of them become victim of Muslims sexuality some time they lost their life by denying to do so.
As other third world countries mostly people are poor, so firstly they want to fulfill their daily needs and then they are ready to hear the word of God. In Pakistan 60% of the population is jobless. Many of the younger generation are unemployment due to a lack of skills and they easily become involved with bad people. They are compel to do so because they don't have enough sources and facilities to get good skill or high tech for better job to make their future bright. This is militating on their future. Consequently they are adopting evil ways. That's the reason our people produces and helps the terrorists.
Revivaling Crusades and Seminars are one of the best and effective way to teach the people. We can easily teach Christians among Muslims in these types of meetings. Who have burdon to teach & preach in the depressed & needy people? can easily join us.
Money is not our requirement, as every one knows that Gospel is a gift, which is free for all. If our Lord has given you a gift of teaching & preaching don't hesitate to come and give us dates that we arrange your meetings in Pakistan.
If you are unable to come than how you can help us?
