Smoke-Free Pot
A new study finds that vaporizers are highly effective at releasing marijuana's active ingredients without the toxins generated by combustion. The research, sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and the California chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, shows that the most serious health concern about cannabis--the respiratory effects of smoking--can be addressed with commercially available devices.
Vaporizers, though pricey compared to a bong, may be especially valuable for patients who rely on marijuana to relieve nausea, pain, or muscle spasms, since they use the drug more frequently than the average pot smoker and may be especially vulnerable to the effects of smoking. The National Academy of Sciences' 1999 report on medical marijuana cited this concern in calling for the development of inhalers to deliver THC and other useful cannabinoids. It did not consider vaporizers as an alternative.

All right, Jacob, time for a product comparison article.
I inhaled but didn't get high...or was it I didn't inhale but got high?
The #1 Google hit for "vaporizer."
Wow, its odorless!!! Just say yes to smoking in the dorm!
A friend of mine made one out of a soldering iron and a rheostat among other things. Worked great and was cheap. Although I wonder about the adverse effects of inhaling oil vapor.
So do I, when sauteeing onions.
An interesting point: The IOM committee WAS informed about the existance of vaporizor technology by Dr.Lester Grinspoon, who was one of the reviewers. But, for SOME reason, they chose to effectively ignore the existance of this smoke-less technology, while focusing on the detrimental health effects of the smoke itself. See Richard Cowan's commentary on the IOM executive summary of their 1999 medical marijuana report at: http://www.marijuananews.com/marijuananews/cowan/executive_summary_of_the_iom_rep.htm
And of course the real deal is at http://books.nap.edu/html/marimed/
The report DOES mention vaporizors, once.
In chapter 5, under 'regulatory hurdles to market', we find the following:
"Vaporization devices that permit inhalation of plant cannabinoids without the carcinogenic combustion products found in smoke are under development by several groups; such devices would also require regulatory review by the FDA. "
For one thing, this implies that these devices do not yet exist. They do, and did in 1999, and have been made and sold for years.
But more importantly, this important 'work-around' to THE major (medical)objection to the theraputic use of cannabinoids was left out of the executive summary, and the report's major conclusions.

anyone know where you'd get a vaporizer that could be used for pot & how you'd use it? Sounds like a great idea but how exactly does it work?
I've seen a few different models advertised in High Times. There's the Volatizer (www.volatizer.com), which costs about $200, and the BC Vaporizer (www.bcvap.com), which goes for $90. The most recent MAPS/California NORML study used the Volcano, made by the German company Storz & Bickel (www.storz-bickel.com).
They all release cannabinoid vapors by heating the pot rather than burning it. In the Volcano, according to MAPS, marijuana reaches temperatures of 266 to 446 degrees Fahrenheit.
I am outraged and going to call my representative/senator to immediate action.
These dangerous devices must be banned before the inevitable epidemic of high-efficiency drug consumption threatens the very fabric of our society. It is important to protect the vulnerable from this temptation, especially our impressionable youth.
Sound familiar?
Can you Bogart a vaporizer?
Martin is right. Get 'em while you can.
i made a vaporizer. It was very very cheep. Its a 2o oz pop bottle, and a solderin iron. It works amazingly, and feels great. The taste is the best ever, and the overall high is very clean. i give it a 5 out of 5.
It should be noted that the high from the vaporizer tends to be a little different. I read somewhere that the vaporizer tends to not release all of the alkaloids and therefor there is a slightly different character to the buzz. Errr, do a seacrh for vaporizer comparison or something to find it.
Does vaporizing burn the lungs just like a straight joint?
I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE ONE AT HOME, CAN ANY TELL ME A PARTS LIST FOR ONE. I HAVE THE HEAT GUN WHAT ELSE DO I NEED
would like to one of your products
You know. Vaporizing and smoking is great and all that! Yet if it were legal. One could grow plenty. That we could all get together and have a smorgiz'bord of scumchous food to scarf down.
Eating marijuana can get you higher than you possibily imagined. If there's enough...Just think. When you think you're full. The munchies hit from all the pot we just ate. Hell. We'ld have to eat again...
Nice!!!
is still dont really understand how to make one...
I've had a factory made vaporisor for about a year now. Let me just get this out of the way right away. Science will never replace the joint. However, throw everything else out because the vaporizor is the next best thing to non-jointlike smoking. There is a wierd vapor-cough you can get. Its almost worse sometimes in the beginning, but I get without the black shit you wont hurt your lungs over time.

Look. Just form a bowl from aluminum foil. Make a stem on the base of the bowl to go over and wrap around the tip of the soldering iron. Twist a this piece of wire around it to keep it on tight. An appropiate sized rheostat will help regulate temp - else you'll vaporize too much at once. I find that paying attention and plugging and unplugging the iron works.
