Our Bodies, Our Sourpusses
It appears that feminist author Naomi Wolf, who's been known to complain about the lack of cowgirl outfits in maternity clothes (scroll down), lacks a sense of humor as well as a fashion sense.
According to Ananova, Wolf was outraged after being interviewed for HBO's great spoof talk show, Da Ali G Show. At one point, Ali G (a self-consciously stupid wannabe rapper/whigger played by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen) got the author of The Beauty Myth and Misconceptions to rap, "Yo, yo, don't be sexist, I'll let you ride in my Lexus." Ali G also asked tough questions such as whether Wolf thought women would ever be allowed to fly airliners; he fretted that if women got "equal rights" in the workplace, then they'd want them at home, too.
Wolf has reportedly called in her lawyers and pressured HBO not to show the interview on the grounds that she was unknowingly being used to offensive comic effect (given that some of her books sold very well, this may well become a class action lawsuit against her readers all over the country).
Just how sore a sport is she being? Consider that Donald Trump, Newt Gingrich, C. Everett Koop, Inside the Actor's Studio's James Lipton, and former CIA director James Woolsey have all been similarly duped by Ali G without calling in the legal eagles. Ali G even got former US Attorney General Ed Meese to rap and insisted that another former top cop, Dick Thornburgh, explain what is legal, what is illegal, and what is barely legal.
The current issue of Reason--available on newsstands and to subscribers only!--has a wonderful appreciation of Da Ali G Show in it. Which is one more reason to subscribe today.

It has been reported that Nader threatened to sue because he was tricked into rapping during his interview.
To be "tricked" into anything (especially rapping), seems to me to indicate a certain level of stupidity on the part of the trickee. Is it possible that Ms. Wolf feels the slightest bit like an ID-10-T?
Yes, Wolf is the idiot in this story. It behooves any public figure to know what he/she is getting into before agreeing to an interview. Wolf should have checked out "Da Ali G Show", and if she didn't like the format or content, she shouldn't have agreed to do the interview.
Well, she didn't need to get the lawyers involved. If she'd just worn more earth tones when making her demands, HBO would have respected her enhanced assertiveness and warmed to her as a human being.
Then HBO wouldn't have needed a recount...
Greg,
I have recently become fond of the term "wangsta" to describe this behavioral pattern. It doesn't come with the baggage that whigger does -- and I like saying "wang".
James Lipton was great on that show. He was willing to entertain Ali G's questions, but only to a point. When Ali G tried to get him to do a ridiculous pre-written rap, he refused, but made up his own and delivered it. It was about respect, and it was pretty good for an old drama teacher/tv host.
I like shows like Da Ali G Show because they can turn your perceptions of people inside out. I never really cared about James Lipton before. Now I think he's pretty cool.
This is interesting. About 2 weeks ago - right when I "discovered" this show, they took all of the episodes off of HBO on-demand. Previously all of them (including this one, I assume) were available for viewing all the time.
Anyone ever see the National Lampoon parody, "X-Women" comics? The cover had the seal of the "That's not funny, it promotes violence against women" comics code authority.
So is a "whigger" someone who aspires to rejuvenate that long defunct political party? 🙂
Naomi Wolf's behavior is reminiscent of an old joke:
Q. How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One, and that's not funny!
A fanatic with no sense of humor? Nooo - I don't even believe it!
How's this Pride and Prejudice quote fit her?
"She is a selfish, hypocritical woman, and I have no opinion of her."

Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped.
