    The Upholder of Morals travels to a mysterious island with a weirdo religion to enforce Mainland Law in defense of a helpless girl. That's exactly the plot of The Wicker Man. Eerie.

    Bligh was governor of New South Wales, not Tasmania.

    Evan,
    Bligh was actually gov of New South Wales (Van Diemans Land (later Tasmania) was part of NSW at that time).

    And it was not the masses that he pissed off but the colony's wealthy landowners (particularly John Macarthur, The founder of Oz's Sheep industry) who resented Bligh's literal interpretation of the British law that said the convicts were not there as some sort of slave supply. They had to be paid and afforded some minimally humane treatment.

    Of course Christian's objection to Bligh was that he (Bligh) insisted on naval discipline and the crew just wanted to have some fun. Looks like maybe Fletcher's descendents haven't gotten over that one.

    Like many competent Englishmen Bligh came from the lower classes and was constantly having to prove himself in spite of having risen so high in the ranks of the RN.

    Unlucky for the Pitcairn crew that they ended up in NZ...after being set adrift from the Bounty, Bligh was later made governor of Tasmania, where he once again roused the hatred of the masses (he must have been a thoroughly disagreeable individual), and was imprisoned in his house (under his bed according to legend) for some time in the Rum Rebellion. He was recalled after that, and I don't believe anyone thought it fit that he ever get any positions of authority again. Perhaps the Aussies would find ground for common cause with his rivals' descendents, however perverted.

    The funny thing is Fletcher Christian is my 6th generation great grandfather and when I moved to Canberra my best friend happened to be cpt William Bligh's 6th generation great grand daughter. And we had no worries at all.
