Attention Title IX Fanatics

Women's hoops is still a money loser for colleges. The average Division I-A women's team lost $711,000, and only six out of 114 programs made money, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

Besides, it ain't really basketball if there is no 10-second count to get the ball out of the backcourt.

  1. i think you’re missing the real point: girls suck at sports and no one wants to watch them.

  2. My Big Ten university didn’t have a program in Mountain Biking, so I had to participate on a club team. The women raced with us at the same time on the same trail – and anyone who wanted could race.

Of course, there were different categories for different type of riders (I was a “Beginner” – that’s “Amatuer” for you) and I was riding with guys in the “Pro” category.

The funny thing was that rode in one race (the state championship) on a hot summer day and it was so hot that most of the other riders dropped out. I was the last in my class to finish – but I placed 4th in the state.

I think that’s the kind of fun that scolarship atheletes miss out on…

  3. The great irony of Title IX, is that to promote equality, it provides for the establishment of segregated leagues. That’s much like bringing back Negro League Baseball under the banner of “Affirmative Action”.

While Martha Burk is slamming Augusta for excluding women, should we boycott the LPGA for excluding men?

  4. Make them play in thongs, that might bring in some crowds.

  5. Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!
You all miss the point. Women sports, men sports, amateurs, professionals, it’s all just a bunch of stuff that only concerns the people who are involved. There shouldn’t be any laws about this, the government shouldn’t be involved at all. The state should extract itself from education. Same problem with UofM and affirmative action, they should be allowed to do it, I shouldn’t have to pay for it.

  6. When it did become of the purpose of college sports to make money?

Is every sporting activity everywhere now professional?

  7. Michael Jordan,

The aristocratic notion of “amatuerism” is long now dead.

  8. Gary – once again, you’re dead wrong. The vast majority of college athletes play sports which lose money for the university and for the athletes themselves (not all college athletes earn scholarships, ya know). Tell a hurdler, a wrestler, soccer player, or any female athlete that they’re not amateurs.

  9. Well, I’m not surprised that women’s sports don’t make money….80% of college football teams lose money too.
