Crack Shot
The Washington Post describes the response from federal drug czar John Walters to a Maryland bill that would set a $100 fine as the maximum penalty for people who use marijuana out of "medical necessity":
Walters, who has launched a campaign against efforts to relax state drug laws, said the General Assembly had been "fooled" by "drug legalizers" who are using the suffering of sick people to promote a pro-drug agenda that includes legalizing marijuana entirely.
"Unfortunately, they have snuck up on people in Maryland and used them to help the wider effort," Walters said.
Walters said he hopes "the governor will see through the con." The argument that marijuana is "a proven, efficacious medicine" makes no more sense than "an argument for medicinal crack," he said.
Walters seems to have forgotten that cocaine, unlike marijuana, is legal for medical use, mainly as a local anesthetic, although it is applied topically rather than smoked. Marijuana's active ingredient, by contrast, is absorbed most quickly and efficiently by inhalation. If Walters' comparison proves anything, it's that the distinctions made by the Controlled Substances Act, which allows cocaine and morphine as medicines but not marijuana, have little to do with a drug's dangers.

Walters loves to use this argument that "legalizers" are using sick people to promote an agenda. To my knowledge, there are many sick people who want marijuana legalized for medicinal purposes. Is he suggesting they're too stupid to know they're being bamboozled?
I know a lady, a mortgage banker married to a truck driver, who's going through chemo for a dose of breast cancer. The nausea got so bad she broke down and now tokes up regularly. Her daughter is risking a felony for being the mule.
Pretty amazing that someone with the lofty title of "Drug Czar" does not even grasp the bare basics of pharmacology and toxicology.
The drug war left the realm of rational plausibility decades ago. It's like a religion now, to question the dogma is to risk damnation. And as always happens when the church is run by the state. The overt oppression of the masses and the naked wielding of power are executed in the name of the unquestionable articles of faith.

That is exactly what he is suggesting. And judging by his quote here he feels the same about the people in the state of Maryland.

The Drug Czar says he hopes the Governor of Maryland will veto the Medical Marijuana bill.
According to the Marijuana Policy Project, Gov. Robert Ehrlich, a Republican, was a supporter of Medical Marijuana in Congress, and they celebrated his election as a victory for supporters of medical marijuana.
I guess Walters does not bother with background information.
Gene,
If Bob Ehrlich stands up for his beliefs on this (assuming he still holds them), he will be hung out to dry by his party just like the governor of New Mexico was, no matter how orthodox he is on every other issue. The Drug War is a front in the Culture War, and taking even one step back would mean admitting that returning American culture to 1956 at the point of a gun isn't self-evidently correct. The GOP cannot have this, and will let Mr. Ehrlich know.
Joe,
I think it's got more to do with power and money than misguided conviction but yeah, to doubt the official doctrine is to be branded a heretic.
How about Drug Lord hehehe
The "emperor" line reminds me of another quip: Why do we have a "drug czar" anyway - didn't we fight a revolution precisely to be rid of people like czars? Maybe we should take to calling him the Drug Kaiser, or Drug Caesar. Same etymology...
Sounds to me like Walters is high on the drug of absolute power that the Federal government has asserted in the matter of drugs.
Strange, isn't it, that the Constitution declares in no uncertain terms that any power it doesn't explicitly give to the Federal government belongs to the States or the people, NOT the Feds?
Where in the Constitution does the Federal government get to dictate the availability of food or drugs? Where in the Constitution does the Federal government get the power of prohibition?
Look in your own copy of the Constitution. If your answer is "why, nowhere," then should we not conclude that Mr. Walters is the Nowhere Man?
He's a real Nowhere Man
Sitting in his Nowhere Land
Making all his Nowhere Plans
For Nobody
The difference between an emperor and a lunatic, it has been said, is that people actually do what the emperor says. When will enough of us realize that the emperor has no clothes, and when will we disregard his opinion as if he were a naked, raving lunatic?
Not soon enough for the health of this country, I fear.
