The generous folks at www.capitalism.net have just posted the great Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises' wonderful book Socialism online in pdf format (the magnum opus Human Action is also available there too). Still a great and important read after 80 years.

kind of ironic that they're giving it away 😀 which i think underlines the growing importance (and problematic) of externalities in a technologically driven (if not determined!) world. the debate runs as to how large and whether they're amenable to coasian / de sotian "capitalification" arguments; even milton friedman has accepted their inevitability.

for my money, i'd have to say joseph schumpeter is increasingly more relevant nowadays as the concept of social value gains traction in an era given to maximizing happiness; especially when technology has effectively made efficient markets functionally equivalent to linear programming techniques in command economies. next up: nonlinear programming! altho the machines may not have use for us by then 😀
