Protesters are surrendering faster than the Iraqis! 1,300 longhairs busted in San Francisco alone. I always miss the excitement.

I'm not being snarky here but, really, what is the point? What's the point of a bunch of hippies clogging up a city that isn't exactly going to vote for Dubya in 2004 anyway, in a pointless attempt to stop a war that's going to be over in a week or two? Just so they feel better? Something to do?

Whoooa man! your like blowing my mind with your bad vibes man!!!

  3. Steve   23 years ago

And the media breathlessly reports "HUNDREDS" of protestors. shit, from the media reaction, you'd think it was millions.

  4. geophile   23 years ago

I may not always like war, but the traditional pummelling of the hippies fills me with glee.

  5. david f   23 years ago

... and had you tried to get home on lake shore drive last night, oh yeah. youda liked the thought of pummeling.

what i don't get (sure these types aren't gonna vote for dubyah. gore was probably too "right wing" for them, too!!!) is why are these types alienating people potentially sympathetic to their cause?

someone i know in DC who's very anti bush and anti war got more riled up over a bridge that was blocked by protestors than by anything the administration or the war has caused.

    strange.

I witnessed the protests in San Francisco and followed them for a while yesterday evening. It's the most intense shit I've ever personally witnessed, but it still wasn't early as bad as it could have been (thank god).

At one point I walked by a protestor who'd just gotten pepper-sprayed after charging the cops, and there were a couple of moments when I thought the cops (all decked out in riot gear) were going to just do a sweep of everyone in the area. But I would stop short of calling it "total anarchy," as SF's asst. police chief Alex Fagan Sr. called it. It didn't reach full-blown riot status -- no tear gas or rubber bullets.

The protestors yesterday were predominantly young, white, and punks or hippies, not like the comparatively far more diverse crowds at the peaceful weekend marches, and they clearly had a lot of post-adolescent foolishness and testosterone to blow off. This was exactly the kind of stuff I would have gleefully joined when I was 19 myself.

Kind of funny and ironic that everyone's calling them "hippies." A lot of them were not Deadheads but anarchy-symbol-wearing punk rockers. Punks often claim to hate hippies, but a few people -- including Boyd Rice and the Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell -- have made the observation that punks are essentially just a different kind of hippie.

Because, David, it isn't about effective political action. It's about shaking your tail feathers and pissing on your territory - which is why doing it is San Francisco is not pointless; it's the point.
