Spill the Wine
Perish the wine snob? Forces are at work that will at least make snobbery cheaper.
A California wine glut has driven prices down to unheard of levels. Unheard of, at least, for anything not with a screw-top in hip flask size.
And Business 2.0 details Target's move into wine sales, which includes such helpful in-store aids as a flavor wheel that pairs chardonnay with mac and cheese.
Snob factor aside, the real long-term effect of such a broadening of the wine market should be a healthier America. The benefits of a glass of wine with dinner are now unassailable.
When Applebee's has sommeliers, we'll know the change has run its course.

Mark-having read the entire New Testament and most of the old, I can assure you that not only did Biblical wine have alcohol in it, but Jesus most likely drank and enjoyed it. I've heard the "grape juice" argument. Even my (very) fundamental Baptist preacher doesn't buy it.
Damn, someone already beat me to coming up with 'What would Jesus Drink?'. I guess it was pretty obvious. A better way to answer that one might be to debate over whether he drank red or white wine. White wine goes better with fish, according to some, but do white or red grapes grow better in Israel? And even if red grapes are grown there, the color is determined by the skin so if the Irsaelli vintners knew to peel the skin off, they could have white wine too. Any thoughts on this?
Well...the Catholic church would claim He drank Red, since it IS His blood. Protestant churches would claim He drank red because it symbolized His blood. I think He drank good wine, red AND white, because He was no fool.
From long personal wine-snob experience, mac and cheese goes far better with spicy reds than whites, and Chardonnay is just flat wrong. Shiraz is ideal for standing up to Kraft, although an oaky Cabernet can also be made to work.
Remember, anything you save on the food you can spend on the vintage.
I'm sorry, I didn't read past the "screw top in hip flask size" part before I got thirsty.
(I'm gonna have fun with this one!)
What! Cheap wine! That's not a bargain! Cheap wine supports terrorism! What would Jesus drink! (Oh, wait...that WOULD be wine, wouldn't it?)
Steve - if you buy cheap wine, the terrorists have won...
Steve, I can introduce you to one or two of my fundementalist christian relatives who will loudly proclaim that every instance to "wine" in The Bible actually refers to "grape juice."
i agree that Jesus drank "real wine", remember the wedding? it was a celebration and throughout the years, people have always drank true wine at celebrations. however i will say that normally wine was mixed with water, perhaps giving it about the same alcohol content of a low alcoholic beer. however theres no 100 percent proff on the exact alcohol percentage there drinks had, or how big thier drinks where. but since drunkenness was forbidden, i doubt they were drinking 16 ounce goblets of wine that has 12 percent alcohol. LOL.
