Faculty Registry
Over the course of the past twelve months, REASON has embarked upon a project of particular interest to those involved in the academic world, as students or faculty. Initially, our plan was to compile a listing of all faculty members at American colleges and universities who adhered to a systematic belief in the importance of personal freedom. Once we embarked upon the project and corresponded with approximately 100 faculty members, advising them of our plan to include them on the Faculty Registry, we received much enthusiastic response, together with responses less than encouraging. Those who supported the idea of the Registry submitted additional names which brought the aggregate listing to well over 200 names. It warmed our hearts to receive such letters concerning the project as that sent by Professor Milton Friedman:
Dear Mr. Klausner,
I have no objection whatsoever to your listing my name in the faculty registry that you plan to publish.
I am enclosing the copy that you sent me with some additional names for listing as well as with some corrections of the listings that you had there.
This seems to me an extremely desirable venture and I wish you luck with it.
Sincerely yours,
Milton Friedman
For a variety of reasons others whom we had tentatively selected to be included on the listing desired to opt out. We have respected the wishes of those who have requested exclusion from the list, which, unfortunately, leaves some omissions that hopefully may be included in a subsequent listing. Some of those who opted out considered the proposed listing—in its early version—to be "counterproductive" and to really operate as a disservice to those who would be labelled as "libertarian" faculty members. Others desired to opt out for different reasons. Some were quite vitriolic as shown by the letter we received from Professor Gabriel Kolko:
Dear Mr. Klausner,
Under no circumstances should I be listed in your Registry, or thought to be in any manner a supporter of your exotic political position. If anything proves my thesis that American conservative ideology is more a question of intelligence than politics, it has been the persistent use of my works to buttress your position.
As I made clear often and candidly to many so-called libertarians, I have been a socialist and against capitalism all my life, my works are attacks on that system, and I have no common area of sympathy with the quaint irrelevancy called "free market" economics. There has never been such a system in historical reality, and if it ever comes into being you can count on me to favor its abolition.
Sincerely,
Gabriel Kolko
The initial letter which we had sent to the faculty members on the tentative listing indicated that we assumed they would not object to the listing unless we heard from them to the contrary by a certain date. This very approach, assuming acquiescence in the absence of a specific response, was deemed to be quite nonlibertarian by certain faculty members. Subsequently, REASON modified the standards used for inclusion of names on the Registry and decided not to write to each new proposed name.
All in all, the Faculty Registry project turned out to be a much more controversial and time consuming task than was originally contemplated. The concept of the project has evolved somewhat from the original idea of compiling a listing of libertarian faculty members. What is presented below is, rather, a listing of faculty members of American and foreign colleges and universities, who teach courses likely to be of interest to students who are concerned with the goal of achieving a free society. Many of those on the Registry are not libertarians by any meaningful definition of the word. Others might perhaps be considered to be libertarians by some, but not by others. In short, the presence of a name on the Registry emphatically does not connote any adherence to a systematic philosophy of individual rights as such. Instead, those who are listed have been selected based on our understanding that they teach courses which would be of special interest to those interested in the goals and ideals of libertarianism, even if the course might be taught by a socialist.
It is our hope that the Registry will be a useful tool particularly for students who are seeking meaningful educational experiences. We hope that the Registry may grow and expand as more learn of its existence. We are interested in having REASON readers submit additional names of faculty members who would be appropriate for inclusion in the Registry. At the same time, should our readers have objections as to the propriety of the inclusion of any of the names listed, we would be interested in receiving word.
Obviously, there are no precise, well-defined parameters as to who should or who should not be included in the listing. It is our general objective that a faculty member's name be listed if he is distinct from his faculty brethren in offering intellectual challenges and substantive course conduct that expand the vision of his students and significantly assist in providing students with a framework of knowledge or values consistent with the goals of a free society.
