REASON Profile: Manuel Klausner

Thirty-three year old Manuel Klausner is obviously a man on the go. In addition to his work as a partner in a large Los Angeles corporate law firm (where he specializes in commercial litigation), he is currently a write-in candidate for Congress, challenging Barry Goldwater, Jr. in California's 27th District…as well as his being editor and an owner of REASON magazine.

Mr. Klausner did his undergraduate work at UCLA, receiving an A.B. degree with honors in political science. He received his LL.B. and LL.M. from New York University School of Law where he was a Root-Tilden Scholar and associate managing editor of the N.Y.U. LAW REVIEW. While at NYU he studied with Ludwig von Mises and Sylvester Petro and grew to actively identify with the classical liberal viewpoint. He also became closely acquainted with Murray Rothbard in New York. Mr. Klausner studied in Denmark in 1963-64 under Ford Foundation and Fulbright grants, then served as an instructor on the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School the following year. At Chicago he did editing for the JOURNAL OF LAW AND ECONOMICS and NEW INDIVIDUALIST REVIEW.

Mr. Klausner and his wife Willette, a UCLA economics graduate who is vice president of an advertising research firm, are active theater and movie goers (Mr. Klausner is on the Music and Fine Arts Committee of the L.A. Junior Chamber of Commerce) and have a very full social life. They enjoy traveling and try to spend a month every year in Europe or Asia. Mr. Klausner enjoys playing chess and regrets that he no longer has the time to compete in tournaments. For physical exercise he runs a mile or two every day—certainly a fitting activity for a person as peripatetic as Manny Klausner!
