More Fun in Obamaconspiracyville: In Which Larry Sinclair Gets Arrested

I blogged a few weeks back about a convicted criminal, Larry Sinclair, who'd been begging the media to cover his wild allegations about Barack Obama. Today Sinclair trotted into the National Press Club to air the allegations before what can literally be described as an audience of international press, and can more accurately be described as an amused bunch of people taking in a circus act.

It had been a difficult morning for Sinclair. The Politico's Ben Smith published a short feature on Sinclair's 27-year criminal record of fraud and petty crimes; Greta Van Susteren linked the story, and told viewers/readers why she has ignored him. "While the internet is a great communication and educational tool, it is also viral when it comes to smearing people," she wrote, prompting commenters to call her a cover-up artist and an agent of Barack Obama. It got worse when Sinclair's lawyer Montgomery Sibley—whose license is currently suspended in D.C. and Florida—showed up in a kilt and told reporters that his above-average endowment made slacks tight and uncomfortable. The Rev. James David Manning, who gained web celebrity in April for a YouTube'd sermon in which he called Obama a "long-legged mack daddy," sat in the crowd of 50 or so with his family. He didn't take questions.

How did Sinclair hold up? Rather terribly. He started with a lengthy statement that admitted most (not all) of his crimes and dispatched Sibley to run around the room with a microphone. As Seth Colter Walls recounts, most of the questions were legalistic and (somewhat) credulous. Sinclair was asked who funded the event (donors, over the internet), how he made his living (he's on disability), and whether Obama was "well hung" (I'm not going to dignify his answer here). The only new "evidence" he presented was the name of a limo driver and the bar where he claimed to have met Obama (who, in Sinclair's story, used his real name and job title as he rendevouzed with a cruising criminal he'd never met before).

I only got to ask one question: What time of day did Sinclair meet with Obama on November 6th and November 7th? In Sinclair's story, Obama partied with him on the 6th and traveled to his hotel in Gurnee, IL (an hour and change from Hyde Park) on the 7th. Sinclair smiled at the question. "We met in the early evening of November 6th," he said. "As far as a specific time on November 7th, I can not provide that to you." He added, parenthetically: "And I know where this question is coming from."

"You know where this question is coming from?"

"Thank you." Sinclair moved on and Sibley refused to let me ask another question. Why didn't I wait until the end of the press conference and rush up to the accuser? The second Sinclair stopped taking questions, he fled the room and reporters were denied access to anyone but Sibley. I was a little disappointed until I heard the reason. Larry Sinclair was arrested after the press conference and is being held by the Washington, D.C. metropolitan police. He's been charged as a fugitive from justice; one of his warrants can be seen here.

UPDATE: More details here.

UPDATE: The always-worthwhile Tim Shipman has his own account, in which I appear as a "journalist" who angers and stumps Sinclair.

Between coughing fits, Mr Sinclair claimed that he has given details of phone calls between him, the limousine driver and Mr Obama to the Chicago police. He was forced to correct one of the mobile numbers he read out, a typing error in the glossy printed statement we were each handed.

Mr Sinclair offered a hotel receipt that appears to show he was in the Chicago area at the time he claims his bizarre liaison occurred. But he was not able to provide any phone records from 1999.

He named the limousine driver as Paramjit Multani and said that the two had been in contact during the early part of the year but that now Mr Multani and his family have disappeared. This is convenient to say the least. The documents he supplied listed a limo driver as Rashpal Multani instead.

I feel deeply for the newspaper reporter who's assigned to dig into this—every indication is that Sinclair wants to send some people on a goose chase to stretch out his 15 minutes of fame. And is anyone surprised to find that Larry Johnson posted Sinclair's rambling statement in full? What is it about Obama and guys named Larry?

After I got finished laughing at the well-hung lawyer in the kilt, I did some more clicking around, and found out that Larry Sinclair is not the one who paid for the room where the press conference was held.

It was paid for by "Veritas Federal Media," which appears to be the same as "Veritas Media Group." It has some interesting political ties to the far right wing.

Its owner is a far right-wing consultant who appears on Fox, CNN, and CNBC, and owns at least one radio station.

Or, as I have advocated all along, sit this one out.

Hugh, I still think it would be better if the LP got a large percentage of the vote. Then more of their platform might be taken seriously and incorporated in to one or both of the majors. An even better outcome might be the eventual collapse of one of the major parties.

Bob Barr isn't perfect, but I find myself agreeing with 90% of what he claims. My Obama McCain level of agreement is about 15%

Besides, as Obama and McCain are almost identical, a vote for either would be wasted.

2. Why won’t Senator Obama provide his cellphone numbers and telephone records for all his personal and official cell phones held by Senator Obama or September 2007 – December 23, 2008, the murder of Donald Young?

3. Why won’t Senator Obama provide all email communication both personal and campaign related to and/or from AKP Message & Media from January 18, 2008 through February 29, 2008 for Senator Obama, David Axelrod and David Plouffe?

4. Why won’t Senator Obama provide proof of all payments made from AKP Message & Media, Obama for America, David Axelrod, David Plouffe, and Senator Obama’s accounts for the period of January 18, 2008 through February 29, 2008?

Also, for the record, I resent the idea that Republicans somehow "own" my vote because I'm a libertarian no matter what they scrape from the bottom of their barrel.

"or through getting donations from suckers on the right wing."

That seems the most likely. They are easy to milk, just ask Ralph Reed.

"-- before veering off to talk about werewolves, Dick Cheney, and other scary monsters like Big Oil."

Oh, thank goodness, someone is finally going to start addressing the werewolf problem. You wouldn't know how hard it is to deal with this without a larger initiative. Hey, try to get the cops interested in a suspected pack in the woods behind your house sometime if you don't believe me. On the upside, fewer deer eat the landscaping now...

Hold on a second... Greta Van Sustern, a member of Elron Hubbard's criminal nut-cult, which has done a whole lot more than its share of smearing people (google for "fair game" and "operation freakout"), is complaining about smearing?

I'm pretty sure that this Sinclair is a nutcase, but this is rather like hearing Goebbels call someone a racist.

I went to the same church as Monty Sibley in Rockville, and he wears a church. We chatted one time while our daughters were trick-or-treating the Rockville city hall and nearby lawyers offices (near the church) and he told me he wears a kilt because of his Scottish heritage.

He also told me he was suing the Supreme Court.

I would find the tale of his eccentricity funnier if his client Deborah Jeane Palfrey hadn't committed suicide earlier this year after her case was lost (yes, I think he was her civil lawyer not her criminal defense lawyer, but still...)

A few points:

1) Criminal charges should be settled in the courts, not over the web.

2) One person's "speaking truth to power" is another person's "smear". At first glance, it is difficult to tell the difference. That's why I start with skepticism as a general rule.

3) Obama has a multi-million campaign fund to fight smears with. The local police officer or freeholder does not. Now that we know how smears spread on the internet, maybe readers should evaluate all reports more thoroughly before repeating them with so much certainty.

Man, you are feeding into the insanity. This was Larry's BIG moment to bring out the goods. He didn't do it because he didn't have anything. His "I know where that question is coming from" statement he made when asked what time he had met Obama to have sex/drugs.

Also, take into consideration this: Larry said Obama, when they first met, told Larry his name and occupation (his Youtube and blog stuff). Then Larry says, on this day, Larry's big "I will give the public the proof" day, Larry says he didn't know who Obama was when they met and didn't know who he (Obama) was until he saw Obama make his 2004 speech at the Democratic convention, when Larry was across the border in Mexico. That's a big fat fucking "HUH?"

This guy is a goof ball. He is looking for a payoff AND he is milking people on the internet for thousands of dollars in the hopes that Larry really might have something. He doesn't have anything. It's a non story. Move on.

Mitch and Nan went undercover to Larry's event and called the marshals from there. Plus, to have arrested Larry before the news conference would have inflamed the conspiracy theory nut jobs out there. "See? They had him arrested to silence him." Although if you read Larry's blog, you will see that his followers/financiers are claiming Larry had himself arrested because he felt his life was in danger.

joe | June 19, 2008, 10:26am | #

About that first update:

If the Blogger News Network actually provided "High quality English language" news, they wouldn't have written this: Larry Sinclair–the gay man who’s accused Senator Barack Obama of sharing gay sex and drugs with him in a Gurnee, IL hotel room in 1999–held a press conference at the National Press Club today.

Pointing out that the sex a man shares with another man, who is gay, is "gay sex," is at best mediocre-quality English language.

What all you Obamabots overlook is the fact that Obama could very well be on the Down Low and involved in drug use, but he is your messiah, so you don't care, make fun and discredit LS all you want, but there are real reporters, not maniacal Obama blogers, investigating this as we speak.I was born and raised in Chicago, and Obama is one of the most corrupt Chicago politicians we have ever produced. His fall will come fast and hard.
Yes, Hillary is in the wings waiting.

Obama and his thugs are doing a good job of covering this all up, I'm talking about the murders too.

The Chicago judge is stalling the investigation.

Since Obama is low enough to send his thugs into the caucuses to steal delegates through the use of threats, force, fraud and theft, this is totally believeable.

If some of these kiss-ass reporters got off their asses Obama would be charged with murder.

I guess we will have to wait for the GOP to hang him.

Larry Sinclair has thus far failed to produce a single viable piece of evidence. Is it any wonder nobody in the mainstream media wants to risk their career and credibility covering this farce?

I've been trying to get Mr. Sinclair to response to questions on his blog (simple ones, like "If you think Obama's phone records would prove you right, why don't you provide your phone records, they should work just as well, right?" ), but the blog is so heavily moderated that not one single real question can get through, and apparently even his own worshipers are now having a hard time posting due to overaggressive comment deletion.

I know several people who've tried to ask questions of Mr. Sinclair, but that is apparently not allowed on his blog, despite the fact that his blog clearly states "You may comment on any post, regardless of your position. However, please note that any and all abusive, threatening and vulgar comments and emails will result in your user name, email address and IP address being posted regardless and without the posters permission. You have been warned." .

Small wonder, huh? The guy who wants to force Obama to answer his questions will not answer anyone else's :)

I personally would love it if someone in the media just exposed this guy for the fraud he is. I'd watch that episode for certain, and I'm sure the advertisers would be well pleased by the number of viewers ;)

.
