Another Nail in the Coffin of Teabaggers-Are-Racists Trope?

Liberals have long used racism as the explanation for why Republicans and Teabaggers don’t appreciate President Obama more. But how then do they explain the vaulting popularity of Herman Cain in the GOP primary? The Wall Street Journal/NBC poll this morning found that:

Fifty-two percent of Republican primary voters view Cain favorably, versus just 6 percent who see him unfavorably. Among Tea Party supporters, his favorable/unfavorable score is 69 percent to 5 percent. And among Republicans who identify themselves as "very conservative," it's 72 percent to 2 percent.

Liberals allegedly believe in science and data. So in the interest of intellectual honesty, can they please drop the notion that the GOP/Tea Party are irredeemably racist and work up some other accusations?  If they are caught flat-footed in the event of an Obama vs. Cain matchup, things might get rather boring for those of us in the Fourth Estate.

    They've already figured a way around the facts: they just say that Cain "isn't black enough". I think Cornel West has already gone there.

  • silent v||

    I think the explanation is that Cain is so wildly popular because it gives TPers racial cover. Kind of a some-of-my-best-friends-are-black thing.

  • ||

    LOL, yeah, kinda like the "Brothers Brothers" skit on In Living Color.

  • Mr Soul||

    I love the Brothers Brothers! Great call.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    Janine Garafalo already did some standup about that. She acted so serious too.

  • yonemoto||

    You mean kind of like how Obama is for liberals?

  • you win!||

    +9000

  • DDavis||

    Cain is a white identified race traitor, didn't you know?

    Do you think that "some of my best presidential candidates are black" proves you're not a racist? Ha!

    The only defense against a liberal charge of racism is to stick to the liberal party line on all issues. To disagree on any point is to be labeled a racist, sexist, homophobe.

  • Copernicus||

    Yes, can you grasp the cleverly evil logic of the Repubs/Teamen?

    They are so racist that they nominate a Black man of their own.
    Now no one can claim they are racist. Thus insuring that the next president of the USA must be a Black man.

    Huh, wait, what?

  • jtuf||

    + 1

    Liberals will readily call black white and white black to make facts fit their beliefs.

  • prolefeed||

    If you go by the color of his skin, he's plenty black. Now, if they mean he doesn't act black culturally or politically, then what they are saying is anyone who runs for office as a Republican can't really be black culturally or politically, and thus whites voting for him or her isn't proof of non-racism.

    Apparently they've read Catch-22.

  • Maxxx||

    A Cain - Obama race would a contest between the descendant of slaves and the descendant of slave owners.

    Guess which one the Democrats favor.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    The ones who wish to enslave us all. Like Wilson and FDR.

  • ||

    maxx,
    now that's funny. and true.

  • Guest||

    Herman Cain is to Superman as Barrack Obama is to Bizarro.

    Except in realtime Obama has America so fucking bass-ackwards Superman left for the UN wherever DC sent him.

    I'd rather send Obama to the UN with both packing their fucking bags.

  • Atanarjuat||

    "Black" is really more of a culture than a color (though I'm white so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). How anyone can say Cain, who was born in Memphis, went to an HBCU, and is a Babtist minister in Atlanta, is less black than Obama, whose life story could mostly be featured on SWPL, I don't understand. Unless it's just Team Blue partisanship. I understand they'll say absolutely anything.

  • The Art-P.O.G.||

    I think it's more of a color than a culture. I mean, "black" has hella subcultures (well, all types of individuals), just like "white". But I take your point.

  • Cartman||

    You guys are hella stupid. You guys are hella lame. You guys are hella dumb. Hella, hella, hella.

  • Heroic Mulatto||

    Well, that's just it, isn't it? Cain, as a successful entrepreneur typifies the cultural values of hard work, self-reliance, and individual freedom; thus he is accused of "acting White."

    Whereas, Obama came to prominence as a 'community organizer,' a welfare-state sinecure who typifies the values of collectivist interdependence. Thus, Obama's success doesn't threaten his status with 'the People'.

  • Guest||

    Why not just say MLK vs Malcom-X?

  • ||

    Exactly. And of course most black people are socially conservative as hell. Liberals never want to talk about that.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    A short visit to a black barber shop will prove that in spades.

  • Sparky||

    RACIST!!1111!!!!1!1!!!!

  • ||

    Most white liberals live in lily white suburbs or gentrified city areas. So they don't have to actually see or know black people. It makes it easier that way.

  • o4||

    RW TP

  • ||

    will prove that in spades.

    Thank god joe is no longer here...

    That "spades" remark would have set off a war that would have wasted my whole day.

  • ||

    Joe has been quite niggardly in his comments for a long time, hasn't he?

  • WarrenT||

    Don't feed the trowels.

  • Prop 8||

    I'm all the Mormons' fault, I have nothing to do with Obama mobilizing the black voter in 2008!

  • a straw man||

    Attack me. I am the real enemy.

  • YHWH||

    Tosses straw man a burning broom...

    Now where's that little dog!

  • ||

    Yeah because there was so much liberal anger directed at black people and hispanics, both of whom voted overwhelmingly against Prop 8.

  • ||

    They prefer to get angry at Mormons for that.

  • ||

    is a Babtist minister in Atlanta...

    Babtists - I thought they kind of went out with the Pharohs.

  • Sparky||

    No, you're thinking of Bastists.

  • ||

    Bab is one of the names of Seti.

  • ||

    Seti? The Egyptians had a program for detecting extraterrestrial intelligence? Say, is that how the pyramids got built?

  • ||

    Which helps explain why Cain is a Babtist minister. He's read all the Von Daniken books.

  • Ska||

    Dude, you haven't seen that crazed Greek dude on History channel?

  • Ancient Astronaut theorist||

    1. Yeah, the Annunaki are coming back in 2012 to rip our hearts out. We know this because the Mayans built a pyramid and a calender to warn us about the end of the world.

    2. Perhaps just the of end "a time" not the "time" as others say.

    I say #2 and the choice couldn't be clearer.

    The ancestor of slave traders who shackles us in socialism thus never leading the way and Marx wins workers of the world unite.

    Or

    The ancestor of slaves who unshackles us from socialism and destroys the main catalyst for the agitators use which brings the power to shackle.

    We can nominate Cain and bring bold change with an undeniable mandate and start deprogramming our children once they see what a bold plan based on simple, steady and fairness. Small business loves this, big business probably divided on it. A change so sweeping that the teh childrunz would be asking you fucks about Rothbard and such. A situation where maybe just maybe the yutes en mass would be flocking to you peeps.

    All I know is we live in interesting fucking times.

    I know the Founding Fathers believed in a concept. Creator allows free will.

    In a Democracy you get the government you deserve.

    And fuck you and the democratic republic BS. We have been Democrazy since the 17th broke the system of checks and balances.

    People!

    Choices.

    Consequences.

  • Alex Jones||

    The Founders were evil mason conspiracist who gave us a concept and a Constitution only so their society could enslave 200+ years later. Its not just progressives and UN one worlders its Herman Cain Banksters and everybody who else disagrees with me on every political positition whether they ever actually voted on it or not. DOOM! DOOM! DOOM!

  • Paulie||

    Yes its true, I know there can't be no factionalism between people within a society where a bunch of top hat and monocle capitalist reside. Especially since the requirement to join is a belief in a creator and a concept.

  • Frick, Frack, WTF!||

    Jerry Seinfeld style:

    Ever notice that on cable television we went from frick to frack when it comes to fuck?

    Why?

    Frick was a much better word to use for fuck than frack because frick rhymes with dick and prick of which both are used for fucking.

    And don't get me started on those American Autumn Wall St. protesters.

    I don't think there's any c'mon sense left in the world so goodbye. I'm on my way to go protest fracking shale because its fricking the environment.

  • Guest||

    Your grammatical skills suck dude. I had to read that shit twice to understand it and then I read it again and said holy fuck write an e-book. :-)

    Herman Cain is the man 9-9-9 is the plan. Don't turn that shit upside down Alex Jones Bachmann you bass-ackwards reading dumbasses. Grasp it and lets take back the future from the workers of the world bullshit and lead the way to that change the Mayans were talking about the end of "a time" not the "time."

    The choices couldn't be starker even if you believe all the backwards assed conspiracy crap that defies logic, common sense and history.

    Choose wisely.

  • Copernicus||

    We are jolly green giants walking the earth.. with guns!

  • Copernicus||

    Hold on. Obama is more than half way through his first (and only) term.

    I thought we agreed he would be black for half and white for half in proportion to his genetics.

  • Copernicus||

    Hold on. Obama is more than half way through his first (and only) term.

    I thought we agreed he would be black for half and white for half in proportion to his genetics.

  • a true Scotsman||

    I am not Herman Cain.

  • ||

    Now, if they mean he doesn't act black culturally

    Cain is more culturally African American then Obama is.

  • ||

    Cain is more culturally African American then Obama is.
    -----------------------
    wrong...Cain is black and his not using African-American over and over is reason enough for me to like him. Obama, on the other hand, actually IS A-A what with a Kenyan father and American mother.

    .....and right. Cain is conservative, a church-goer, was raised to believe in education and hard work, and does not whine. That makes him much like older black Americans who, curiously, actually DID sit in the back of the bus and have separate fountains, unlike the younger grievance-mongers and race hustlers who make a living from shaking down whitey.

  • ||

    wrong...

    Cain was born and raise by a black family as a Baptist in a black community in the south.

    Obama was raised by his white mom and white grandmother in Hawaii.

    Game over. You lose.

  • Spoonman.||

    Wait wait, you're saying it was good to sit in the back of the bus? What the fuck?

  • FlyoverCountry||

    I think wareagle might have been a bit sarcastic...

    Obama's dad was African, his mom was American, which makes Obama much more of an "African-American" than Cain, because both his folks were American.

    I do believe that's the joke.

  • ||

    give flyover a drink and a cigar...on me.

  • Pip||

    In his Memphis childhood, Cain would have sat in the back of the bus with his mom and dad.

  • Guest||

    I'm telling you Herman Cain is the man and 9-9-9 is the plan. And when everybody is throwing NO! NO! NO! you can't parties after Obama is tossed. Perhaps when everyone is getting along because there are jobs, the system works we can work much easier on other solutions tp other problems of fairness, flat taxes etc....

    Perhaps maybe just maybe we have a chance to reach both's Kings' dream, Rodney and Martin when we bring back 1950s boom(not necessarily all the manufacturing) without the sexism, racism and bigotry. Happy days are here again.

    All the others are more of the same.
    Cain has the only plan which stares progressives in the face and says We win you lose! and beats down their talking points, actually could be made to work with a huge mandate, most importantly addresses problems at the roots and SOLVES them in its simplicity. Business loves simple and steady.

    9-9-9 is actually unstoppable and by deabting it with liberals their head will be exploding when the realization comes thats its over, or they'll be converting. Its designed by this man with a great analytical mind and problem solving abilities to be unstoppable and make us all Hermanators against Obamatrons. Fun!

    Even if they say it will fall short you tell them we'll have to cut or ask the patriotic millionaire crowd to hold a marathon.

    WTFU! people! Rabid partisan heads exploding like zombies. Why would you not want to get on board to such potential if we all unite e pluribis unum -out of many, one.

    Hermanators all of us, its unstoppable if you have command of it. Stop getting distracted by shiny shit and realize potential where you could talk theory and point to example because some unbrainwashed youngin is askiing you questions when he sees free, fair capitalism in action.

    Do you libertarian fucks see the potential for your idea in this environment? Cain needs a huge mandate to get it done.

    How about we with TP, GOP and whoever else unite instead of the workers of the world marxist fucks.

    Obama used Edward Bernays against capitalism. Pepsi logo and all, our own rope to hang us, in a sense.

    Herman Cain is a CAPITALIST and knows how to debate, gives a great speech on the trail, inspires, is a growing phenom gives us a plan to defeat the far Leftist we all complain about and instead of both parties creeping Left toward the edge of the cliff at a faster speed, or right a little, we slam on the brakes get out of the fucking car and celebrate the e pluiribus unum concept and have real hope and bold change going into the future without the class warfare where you libertarians should flourish edumicating young minds.

    ***cue music***

    I am America....

  • Juice||

    Just got to add that the more I see of the 999 plan, the more I see that it's a pretty stupid, unworkable plan and that Herman Cain doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

  • racist||

    You are only saying that because he's black!!

  • ||

    Cain is Colin Powell black or Clarence Thomas black...so no, not black at all.

    /snark

  • Ska||

    The Hueys to the liberal Rileys?

  • ||

    Colin Powell is black!!!

    http://blog.nj.com/ledgerupdat.....powell.JPG

    When the fuck did this happen?!?!

  • ||

    they just say Cain "isn't black enough".
    ---------------

    funny, but they used to say the same about Obama and it was far more true in POTUS' case. Obama has no connection to the typical black American; he grew up overseas and in Hawaii, where being white is a liability. Just shows once more, though, how when a black strays from the liberal plantation, reliable field hands like Cornel West break out the whip.

  • CatoTheElder||

    Even Laurence O'Donnell felt comfortable enough to go there.

    http://www.theblaze.com/storie.....-on-msnbc/

  • ||

    They've already figured a way around the facts: they just say that Cain "isn't black enough". I think Cornel West has already gone there.

    Well, of course. He's a non-liberal black man. West et al. have said the same shit about Clarence Thomas for twenty years.

  • ||

    Which is especially funny since Sharpton & Co were saying the same thing about Obama four years ago...with considerably more justification, imho.

  • ||

    Note that the rise of Cain leaves room for Tea Partiers to be xenophobic if not racist, since Obama is the son of a furriner.

  • jtuf||

    I bulk of the Tea Partiers in NJ oppose illegal immigration, but don't mind legal immigration. When I propose my idea of tripling the number of immigration visas we give, a couple liked the idea, and a couple didn't want any increase at all.

  • Stormy Dragon||

    Saying the only oppose illegal immigration is like saying DC was only against illegal gun ownership. When legal immigration is nearly impossible for most people, it's a distinction in search of a difference.

  • jtuf||

    I don't object to enforcing the law. If you want to permanently help aspiring immigrants, then work to change the law, like I have. If you want to feel superior to others, then demand that they ignore the laws on the books and then act outraged when they don't agree.

  • Mr Obvious||

    prove it, I think you are making this up.

  • jtuf||

    Mr. Obvious, my comment is a report of my personal experience attending Tea Party meetings. Sorry, I don't have a hyperlink that sends you to a video tape of every moment of my life.

  • ||

    Sorry, I don't have a hyperlink that sends you to a video tape of every moment of my life.

    This will happen someday. Mark my words.

  • cynical||

    The Rise of Cain sounds like the name for a videogame or paperback novel. Featuring vampires or something.

  • Pip||

    I say we should raise Cain while we are able.

  • ||

    "Cain Rises" sounds better.

  • Mainer||

    Noted intellectual Janeane Garafalo said that Republican support of Cain is just more proof that Republicans are racist.

  • ||

    Since Janeane Garafalo has never been funny, intellectually noteworthy, or worth a femtosecond of my attention for her entire life, saying I don't give a fuck what she thinks doesn't even begin to come close to demonstrating how little I care about what she thinks. She's not even worth this post.

  • Dello||

    The GOP doesn't hate Black people, they hate HALF Black people. Cain is 100% Black, unlike Obama.

    That's the best I can figure.

  • Wesley||

    Conservatives really hate Barack Obama, Sr. He married a white woman. They're just taking out that racist hatred on President Barack Obama.

  • ||

    ^^^you just can't make up that level of stupid. Did you two take time out from OWS to add those bits of pithy commentary?

  • ||

    When I see a comment as blatant as that one I assume the writer intends it as satire.

    If Wesley establishes a reputation here as a liberal troll I will stand corrected.

  • cynical||

    That explains why they hate Clarence Thomas so much. No, wait, I was thinking of liberals.

  • jasno||

    Obviously the election of Obama proved how enlightened and tolerant the left is, while the popularity of Caine is just a cynical ploy by the right to attract minorities... or something.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    Cain never used any affirmative action to get ahead. Therefore, he is not a true person of color.

  • Michael Cain||

    You might want to look into this fellow's candidacy, Master Wayne.

  • Probable Liberal Response||

    Herman Cain is an Uncle Tom, conservatives only like him because he's not seen as threatening to whites. Their support of him is actually proof of their racism.

  • PIRS||

    The "uncle tom" label is one I have never understood. It might make sense if a black candidate called for bringing back racial segregation or legalizing slavery or something like that - but merely supporting policies that have nothing to do with race? That is laughable.

    Remind me - what political party did Lincoln belong to .....

  • Maxxx||

    Also not the not so subtle racism in the phrase "...conservatives only like him because he's not seen as threatening to whites"

    In other words, liberals think that 'real' blacks are violent and dangerous.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    Thus the disappointment of Bill Maher that Obama does not hide a pistol under his t-shirt.

  • Fatty Bolger||

    "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden said. "I mean, that's a storybook, man." - Joe Biden

    That's why the liberal media didn't go ballistic on Biden for saying that. They understood him perfectly.

  • ||

    That and the fact that Biden is a Democrat.

  • ||

    The other thing about the "Uncle Tom" label is that if you read Uncle Tom's Cabin, Uncle Tom is not a loathsome character at all. He is a totally noble character who saves a white woman from drowning, refuses to whip another slave and is whipped himself for it, never gives up his faith in God and forgives his overseers upon his death. People have turned his name into an epitaph for something that he really wasn't. I bet your typical OWS douche has never read the book and thinks Tom was a black slave trader or something.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    You must be forgetting that words have no meaning when leftists use them. Any name can be used for name calling, it is the name calling that is important. Witness today that calling someone Hitler is bad and calling them Stalin is a compliment.

  • BakedPenguin||

    epithet?

  • ||

    Yes that.

  • YHWH||

    I think it was his devotion to his original master (the one who treated him well) that causes Uncle Tom to be a denigration. To top that, he didn't even "hate" Simon Legree, another mark against him. Had he cut up Legree and then gone back to the master who treated him well and hacked him and his family up, the left would consider it an honorific.

  • ||

    The point of the book was to show how evil slavery was and how wonderful and forgiving Christianity was. Even a slave could forgive his master. Forgiveness was a virtue not a vice in the book. I really can't imagine what a twisted fuck you must be not to get that.

  • CatoTheElder||

    Having read the book, I have always considered the use of "Uncle Tom" as a pejorative is an indication of ignorance.

    Until you mentioned it, it never occurred to me that somebody could be such a twisted fuck. But considering the animosity of the PC-crowd to the likes of Cain and Sowell and Thomas, maybe ...

  • ||

    No you. I mean liberals who don't get it.

  • Fluffy||

    Had he cut up Legree and then gone back to the master who treated him well and hacked him and his family up, the left would consider it an honorific.

    Me too.

  • ||

    True. But I don't think the fact that he had literally God like levels of forgiveness means his names should be used as an insult for all time.

  • ||

    Uncle Tom II: Zombie Revenge

    You could still get your wish.

  • ||

    I am surprised Tarintino hasn't made a full on antebellum slave revolt race war movie.

  • ||

    his next project is pretty close, Django Unchained

  • Red Rocks Rockin||

    his next project is pretty close, Django Unchained

    This is what Tarantino's reduced himself to--a thoroughly derivative, self-referential director that's now ripping off the same plot lines from his former movies, as opposed to the ones he watched as a video store clerk. No wonder nerds love this guy so much.

  • Michelle Bachmann||

    Herman Cain is an evil bankster just turn his 9-9-9 plan upside down and the Devil is in the details.

  • ||

    Finally someone who has read the book and understands it. I work with a majority of black employees and have asked them what they thought "Uncle Tom " meant, and every single one got the question wrong. Proof that if a lie is repeated often enough people will choose to believe it rather than learn how to think for themselves.

  • CatoTheElder||

    The same party that was opposed by members of the KKK and Southern segregationists.

    All of the Klansmen elected to Congress were Democrats, including the late Robert Byrd, and the Democrats were happy to have them. One Klansman attempted to run on the Republican ticket in Louisiana. David Duke was openly repudiated by the national party, and Louisiana Republicans joined Democrats to defeat him in that election. Duke was running against convicted felon Edwin Edwards, which led to the Republican campaign slogan "Vote for the Crook; It's Important".

    Democrat senators filibustered 1960s Civil Rights legislation. The other party voted for that legislation in higher percentages the Democrats.

  • kbolino||

    While useful information for disproving someone who is historically illiterate, the old affiliations of the parties are not very relevant nowadays (notable exception: unions). At the start of the 1960s, the Democratic Party had been the solid home of white Southerners for a century. By the end of the 1960s, white Southerners were leaving the party in droves.

    This radical shift in political affiliations is undeniably due to the Democratic Party's embrace of the nascent civil rights movement. If you're going to bring history to account, then the fact that the Democrats literally sacrificed their core constituency in order to pursue civil rights has to count pretty strongly in their favor.

    But like I said, this is all mostly irrelevant to modern politics.

  • Comrade Andropov||

    My Democrat useful idiots I order you oppose Ike's attempts at passing rights for the Blacks so we can co-opt the Black vote with marxist-Jesus liberation theology like we successfully planted in S. America.

    Comrades, someday one of those Reverends is going to mentor a messiah to unite the worker's of the world by turning the Bible upside down -Martin Luther King Jr stands in our way to co-opting Black Churches. When he is no longer useful...Jesse Jackson will rub blood on his shirt and be your new spokesman. Our comrades in media will anoint him to speak for all Blacks.

    We have learned from your Rockefellar it easy easier to buy one than have to buy many comrades. The 17th was brilliant and we will use the capitalist pigs own rope to hang them someday.

    If those capitalist pigs want to dwell on human freedom we will take their freedom from them by exploiting human nature. Someday our dear Soviet Premeir will be so bold as to pound his fist on the table and tell the stupid capitalist pigs we will hang them with their own rope by feeding them socialism. And comrades we can do this, yes we can because we are the ones we've been waiting for the workers of the world unite.

  • Mike M.||

    Herman Cain is an Uncle Tom, conservatives only like him because he's not seen as threatening to whites. Their support of him is actually proof of their racism.

    What's so hilarious about this is that before the '08 election, a handful of black writers said that Obama wasn't "authentically black" because he was safe and non-threatening to whites.

  • ||

    My guess is you've never read the book. Most people don't understand what Uncle Tom was really about.

    We all know that Cain is just a front:

    "Too bad, then, that behind this alluring black face lurks a GOP that is white and angry and whose ill will toward blacks remains too rabid to ignore. While most of our eyes were on Cain’s strong showing in recent Republican straw polls, for instance, GOP operatives were working overtime devising ways to disenfranchise poor and minority voters."

    Recent Courtland Milloy column

  • Gojira||

    Damn you, I had to read that, and now I'm going to throw up. The best part is:

    Adding to Cain’s appeal is his background as a computer engineer and bona fide rocket scientist for the U.S. Navy. As far as black people are concerned, that kind of intellectual prowess is right up there with law professor.
  • The Art-P.O.G.||

    I don't know what the hell that paragraph means, but I feel vaguely insulted.

  • ||

    Nothing wrong with preferring engineers to law professors. I somehow doubt that's some widely held black (or any other variety of American) belief, though.

  • Ska||

    Next time someone commits a seriously bone-headed act try calling them a law professor.

  • ||

    To be fair, I've known some quite brilliant law professors. Calling Clinton and Obama "law professors" is part of the problem. They're more like adjuncts.

  • Plato's ghost||

    Engineers build empires, lawyers tear them down.

  • sounds real good||

    Even in context it doesn't make any sense.

  • CrackertyAssCracker||

    I don't even understand that quote enough for it to piss me off. It makes no sense at all.

  • ||

    it's a back-door means of reminding us how fantastically super smart the former law lecturer currently living in the WH is.

  • CrackertyAssCracker||

    Oh, so he is saying Lawyers are smarter than Engineers? In a lying-for-a-living /social-manipulation kind of way, I suppose that is accurate.

    I still don't understand what blackness has to do with it. Is he saying we (ignorant effin crackers) think black engineers are smart just because we are cutting them some slack, but everybody knows engineering doesn't actually take any brains? Or is he saying black people place a higher than proper importance on engineering (as opposed to lawyering)?

    I still don't understand what blackness has to do with it.

    It doesn't have anything to do with it. It's just Milloy doing his damndest to not blurt out, "Yeah, I hate white people, honky, so what?" He has to couch it in passive-aggressive weasel-speak.

    When did law profs become shining intellectual beacons? They come from a non-research professional degree, they publish shit nobody reads in student-run journals instead of actual peer review, and the field has little in the way of objective references to check work against. And those are the full-time profs, not part time "lecturers" who happen to drop in.

  • ||

    I concur. That is why I am hereby founding a new discipline, Legal Science. It will involve extensive animal and human tests and rigorous rigor. All legal scientists will wear lab coats and utilize the scientific method.

  • ||

    Can I join this organization? When can I get my lab coat? Do you have a newsletter?

  • ||

    Yes, now, yes.

  • ||

    In all seriousness, I have often thought of starting an actual useful law review. The quality of legal writing in this country is appalling. How hard would it be to publish things that are actually readable and useful to practitioners?

  • ||

    Beginning with peer review as opposed to teeny-bopper review?

  • ||

    Yes. Have a committee of practitioners who volunteer their time to review. And actually review for content rather than making sure the blue book is correct. As a matter of fact, throw the blue book out and have your own simplified manual of style.

  • Rev. Blue Moon||

    throw the blue book out and have your own simplified manual of style.

    THANK YOU.

    Law journals are like the royals and incest. The horrible mutant children that roam the earth in 2011 are a result of massive inbreeding and pseudointellectual jerkoff sessions. No law review in the world has to actually publish something worth reading, and we all get to "put it on our resumes."

    SO STUPID

  • ||

    Yup. Think about it. They have a bunch of snot nosed little shits change the way the whole profession does legal citation every few years so they can put "I was an editor of the Blue Book" on their resume. WTF? The whole thing is just an ignorant waste of time.

  • AZ||

    Correct. Even worse is the circle-jerk of prestige, the drive to publish "hot" or "important" authors on the trendy topics to "raise the journal's profile". I was an articles editor in law school tasked with selecting pieces, and not only was I overmatched, but I had pressure from other, similarly overmatched editors to make the decisions.

  • ||

    John, that's what this guy is trying to do.

    P.S. I'm not a lawyer

    I'm just fed up with the agri-techno[TOWN-PROVINCE] that governs all.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    Overlawyered is a good one, as is Volokh.

  • ||

    Those are nice sites. But they are not practical enough. They are more political sites with a legal emphasis.

  • ||

    I recall something about one of the Georgetown law reviews publishing something in an entirely different discipline (maybe sociology) that was rejected by peer-reviewed journals in the field. I seem to recall that it might have been politically motivated. Anyway, not kosher.

  • prolefeed||

    Ummm, the whole point of a lot of legalese is to hide in plain sight the crap you're trying to pull by boring the reader and/or being incomprehensible. Clarity is considered a fault in that situation.

  • ||

    Somewhere in all of this adversarialness we've lost interest in plain language and, more importantly, the truth.

  • jasno||

    Why can't law be written in a strict language like software? You should be able to process it algorithmically to check for consistency.

    We could require that it be maintained on a commodore 64 to limit the size and complexity.

  • Comrade Andropov||

    Comrades, you must understand language in relation to DRD4 process that not even Bernay's uncle Sigmund understood.. We Soviets understand things you capitalist pigs who buy shit you don't even need or want because you are morons.

Don't you understand this is why the useful idiots are always telling you how wonderful they are using the same Social Justice concept that turns the meaning of your Bibles Worker's in the Vineyard upside down and even a Commandment or two about coveting. You never heard of Sandinista you capitalist pigs. They were fighting against capitalist pigs like you.

    I don't think you stupid capitalist pigs even realize your Constitution was the anti-communist manifesto and that Karl Marx's goal was to dethrone God and destroy capitalism.

    You stupid capitalist pigs don't even put two plus two together and realize the timing, the release of our manifesto designed to destroy you pigs.

    We will fence Blacks in the major cities and organize them and we will feed you free corn until you wild and free pigs don't even know you've been fenced in.

  • ||

    They should experiment on lawyers instead of lab rats. After all, lawyers are more plentiful than rats, the researchers won't get as attached to them, and there are certain things that even rats won't do. *Rimshot*

  • Corey S. ||

    Ha. As a current law student, this is spot on. I've had plenty of law professors who are very smart, but plenty who are completely ordinary.

    In terms of what they add to society, engineers > law professors.

  • Max||

    Hey, even Nazis had their "favorite" Jews. Racists love a house nigger who has himself internalized the racism. If you want to know about racism on the right, check out Ron Paul's old newsletters. The good doctor knows how to play the race card. He buys shoddy fake eyebrows though.

    Max, please tell me how any of that applies to Cain.

  • Warty||

    Art, why do you hate black people so much? It's because they smell, right?

  • The Art-P.O.G.||

    I think it's because I internalized the racism. Any black person who is the least bit conservative, libertarian or just not a Democrat is clearly an Uncle Ruckus.

  • ||

    Totally effed up. The worst thing blacks as a group have ever done is to hand the Democrats a permanent, irrevocable proxy. Pretty much gutted their political power by doing that.

  • Ska||

    I made a pretty fail reference to the Boondocks above.

    I would imagine McGruder respects Herman Cain for making his own way. I doubt he'd consider Cain to be Uncle Ruckus...but he's not exactly Huey either.

    It's funny, back when the "racist' articles appeared in the Ron Paul news letter, everyone, conservatives and liberals alike, was talking about a new breed of super criminal that was appearing on our streets. Everyone knew exactly what the cade meant. They wer referring to young black men who had grown up in single parent homes with mothers who were barely past childhood themselves and lacking parental, and expecially positive male, guidence were essentially capable of crimes beyond anyone's understanding.

    Bill Clinton even wanted congress to approve federal money for "night basketball", presumably so that the brothers could spend the nights shooting hoops instead of each other.

    Liberals told us it was all because their mothers hadn't gotten enough welfare; conservative told us it because they had gotten too much.

    The writer of the articles in Paul's newsletter was recognizing the criminal pathologies that exist in the black community. He never went as far as mainline commentators who were regularly talking about the danger from [black] criminal supermen (they never used the word "black" but everyone knew what they meant).

  • CatoTheElder||

    You forgot about crack ... the children of crack-addicted mothers would be incapable of developing moral sense. They would become the super-criminals. A little while later "The Wire" would appear as #85 on the list of SWPL. This is where white people learn about all of the authentic facets of black culture.

  • MJ||

    "Liberals allegedly believe in science and data."

    When are you going to learn that what people do is a better indication of what they believe than what they say?

    Running Cain is not going to stop the Left from smearing the Tea Party and the Right in general with accusations of racism. It's all they have, you cannot take that away from them even if it is absurd. Garafalo and others have already proven that. All they'll do is claim that Cain, like Thomas is not authentically black because...well, he's not a progressive.

  • John Tagliaferro||

    She did say "allegedly" there.

    Those Scientific Socialists of the Left slap the term "science" all over their ever changing fetishes and think that makes it all right and good.

  • jtuf||

  • Gojira||

    ...being non-white doesn't magically confer anti-racism as a sort of bonus.

    According to most non-whites, yes, in fact it does. You see, hating white people is OK because we're bad, or at least, we were bad, historically. Therefore it isn't racism, it's an appropriate reaction to past treatment. It's only racist if you hate non-whites.

    Though fun fact: my wife is Chinese, and her parents told her when they moved to the states ~15 years ago that they would be OK with her dating other races, except for blacks.

  • Anonymous||

    Why would racists support a black man for President?

    It's not about having a "black friend". It's about having one as the most powerful person in the country. The head of state, the commander in chief, the chief law enforcement officer...

    That's not just having a nice black neighbor that you wave too each morning.

  • ||

    You are right - the black friends defense never works.

    That is why I respond to racism accusations with a long stream blistering profanity.

  • Fluffy||

    Does Dalmia understand racism? At all? Someone can be racist and not automatically hate all black people, everywhere.

    You can not hate them, but you'd have to think they were inferior, or otherwise assign them personal characteristics based on their race.

    So while having black friends wouldn't disprove anything (you could just be having fun slumming with your inferiors, or could be tolerating their negative racial characteristics on the basis of some other affinity) voting for one for President would be a pretty dramatic argument against a racism accusation.

    Because the personal endorsement implied by a vote for the Presidency argues against a belief in his personal inferiority in a way that just making friends with somebody does not.

  • Anonymous Coward||

    Does Dalmia understand racism?

    I'm sure she does not. Give her, and all of us, the benefit of your years as a racist and explain just what it takes to engage in racism.

  • cynical||

    Having a black friend and placing a black man in a position of power over yourself are very different things. I suppose a mildly prejudiced person might do the latter in the right situation (since it's more like reverse affirmative action), but there's no way a white supremacist would.

    "The notion that one can be unfairly "prejudiced" against people with a given religion is logically incoherent."

    Why? Religion is as much a question of cultural identity as ideology and values. The fact that there is so much diversity within individual religions is driven in part by the fact that people with widely varying values can still subscribe to the same religious identity.

    Herman Cain is shit. If he was white he would be polling well behind Gary Johnson and Huntsman. He was in charge of a 3rd-tier fast food corporation for a few years in the 90s. He happily worked on behalf of the FED. He doesn't know shit about foreign policy. He has never had elected office. His 9-9-9 plan is fucking retarded and is straight out of the "Our shitty fast food company needs a promo, quick!" playbook.

    The guy is a fuckhead since he thinks he can jump right to the presidency without having to prove himself as a mayor or a governor.

    Notice how the same contingent of tea party assholes drool(ed) incessently over the following: Palin, Bachman, Rubio, Allen West, Cain.

    The whole tea-party shtick is all about coming up with personality cults for unvetted token minorities and playing identity politics. It boils down to "See! We have [women/blacks/hispanics] too! Now we'll surely win the woman/black/Mexican vote. I especially love when they demand Rubio as VP so they can win the Mexican vote. Ignorant dumbfucks.

  • ||

    The problem with 9-9-9 is not that it is a bad idea in theory. The problem is that it gives us a VAT without fully eliminating the income tax. And would thus be horribly abused by Congress. It is a naive plan on his part. But it is not a horrible plan. If it was actually implemented, it would be a huge improvement over what we have.

    And yeah, the Tea Party latches onto people from outside of politics. That is because they object to the politics they have now. And who says you have to be a professional politician to be President? That was never a qualification until about 50 years ago. And damned if we haven't had some of the worst politicians in history in that time.

    And Cain is a self made man, a no shit engineer, and a real success in the private sector. He has accomplished a hell of a lot more than 99% of the world. How fucking dare you call him a token anything.

    I think we know who the dumb fuck is here and it is no the Tea Party. Go shill and concern troll for team blue somewhere else.

  • Zuo||

    The top 1% of the US is 3,000,000 ppl, John. I'd put your pal Herman in probably the top 10,000 actually. At least.

    The 9-9-9 isn't improvement over anything. Its crap. And furthermore, Obama had about a 1000000x better chance of passing single payer NHS than anybody would to pass something like this 999 asshattery.

    I say you have to prove yourself as a governor or as a big honcho mayor to even be considered for president.

    Herman Cain has caught on because of his race. Same as Obama. If both were plain honkeys you and I never would have heard of them. That's why he's a "token" black guy for the tea party.

  • ||

    Why isn't 9-9-9 an improvement over what we have? We have a pork driven fucked up tax system that distorts the market. A flat tax would be a vast improvement. And not taxing capital gains and savings interest while taxing consumption would do a tremendous amount to encourage savings and investment and long term growth over short term consumption and asset bubbles.

    And I am sorry, I don't view politics as some kind of priesthood one has to be initiated into. I don't give a fuck that Cain was never a mayor or a governor.

  • Fluffy||

    Here's what I don't like about it:

    Why is there a sales tax if I buy a candy bar, but not a share of stock?

    That to me seems to be unfairly privileging one type of economic transaction over another.

    It's also doing so regressively.

    But a 9% sales tax every time someone sold a share of stock would brutalize equity markets and destroy all liquidity.

    If you think about the specifics of the plan, its terrible. If you realize that everyone aside from Cain knows its terrible and it would never fly, then essentially what are your other objections to Cain?

  • ||

    That is a good point. I have never been a fan of the VAT. And I don't think it would ever get through Congress. And I wouldn't want it to because no way would it ever stay at just 9%. Cain would be better off offering a 20 20 plan. Just as catchy, more effective, and without the drawbacks of the VAT.

  • ||

    Zuo,

    Are you Cain's campaign manager? I'm seriously thinking of voting for him now.

  • Fatty Bolger||

    Herman Cain has caught on because of his race

    That's crap. A lot of people right now are looking for somebody with a non-political background. Why do you think Trump, of all fucking people, got to play his little game for so long? Cain is in many ways the anti-Obama. He's smart (and not that faux-intellectual smart), accomplished outside of politics, charismatic, and is an excellent and experienced public speaker. You really think a white guy with those qualifications would have no chance right now?

  • kilroy||

    I don't give a damn about his race but no one has any idea how he will react in a highly political situation. I'd vote for Cain as governor of GA in a minute, but not for POTUS.

  • CatoTheElder||

    "an excellent and experienced public speaker"

    True dat, but it would help if he knew that the objective form of the first person singular pronoun is not "I".

  • ||

    Yeah, but like Ron Paul, He'd fuck shit up in government and probably never be able to get the 9-9-9 plan through, so I'm kind of OK with that. Establishment Romney will be Obamush III.

  • ||

    Yes - but I'm sure he would sign a flat 15% tax as a compromise. So I'm good with him too. And he's not Romney.

  • cynical||

    He'd compromise with Democrats and pass a 36-24-36 plan instead.

  • ||

    only if she's 5'3...woah, that was a hell of a flashback

  • ||

    It's the Brickhouse plan!

  • Mike M.||

    Herman Cain Barack Obama is shit. If he was white he would be polling well behind Gary Johnson and HuntsmanHillary Clinton. He was in charge of a 3rd-tier fast food corporationcommunity organization for a few years in the 90s. He happily worked on behalf of the FEDSaul Alinsky. He doesn't know shit about foreign policy. He has neverbarely had elected office. His 9-9-9 plan"Hope and Change" mantra is fucking retarded and is straight out of the "Our shitty fast food companypolitical platform needs a promo, quick!" playbook.

  • Zuo||

    Yeah. The difference is nobody here is boostering for that shithead obumma.

  • Plastic Fork||

    One of the reasons I'm fond of Cain is that he appears to speak his mind. There doesn't seem to be any attempt to deceive. Agree or disagree with him, you at least know where he stands.

    While I don't support his 9-9-9 plan, I do think it will spur conversation about finally replacing the tax code and that is good. - Even if he wins the presidency, I don't think the 9-9-9 plan would pass, but the push may bring about reforms nonetheless.

    Nothing I can say or do will ever dissuade Zuo from his prejudices about Cain or the Tea Party, so I’m not gonna try. He can continue to obsess over things like race, gender, and class all he wants, but the rest of us don’t have to.

  • ||

    The guy is a fuckhead since he thinks he can jump right to the presidency without having to prove himself as a mayor or a governor.

    Yeah!

    Oh, wait. I thought you were talking about Obama.

  • Barely Suppressed Rage||

    The guy is a fuckhead since he thinks he can jump right to the presidency without having to prove himself as a mayor or a governor.

    Wait, I thought we were talking about Herman Cain, not Barack Obama?

  • Red Rocks Rockin||

    The guy is a fuckhead since he thinks he can jump right to the presidency without having to prove himself as a mayor or a governor.

    This was the funniest line in your dollop of 888 bullshit.

  • Virginia||

    Fine, I'll vote for him. Damn my inner need to see liberals shite themselves dehydrated.

    Sorry, GJ - see you in 4 years, bro. Don't die on Everest in the meantime.

  • Joe M||

    I think he's already said he wouldn't try again after this campaign. :(

  • ||

    The best argument I've heard for Cain so far. Seeing liberals heads explode is the reason I vote. Positive change for the US at this point is just gravy.

  • ||

    That is kind of the way I look at it. None of these guys are that great. And all of them will be driven by events into doing things they never thought they would do. And pretty much all of them would be an improvement over Obama.

    Given that, why not vote for the guy who has the best LUTZ factor and whose victory will make liberals the most miserable?

  • Joe M||

    Do you mean LULZ?

  • ||

    Yes

  • ||

    No, John is really looking forward to the new generation of Cadillacs.

  • Joe M||

    He's done it more than once. I thought he was talking about Frank Luntz or something.

  • Barely Suppressed Rage||

    I thought he was referring to a figure-skating jump.

  • AblueSilkworm||

    + Triple

  • ||

    It was my favorite feature of Reagan. Liberals absolutely lost their shit every time he spoke. It was fun to watch.

  • ||

    Imagine the misery for liberals on Cain's inauguration day. They would have to watch the truly historic even of the Presidency passing from one black man to another and pretend that it didn't count. It would be just great.

  • Joe M||

    Something else that would be even more entertaining would be in 2016, when Cain was up for reelection. Odds are, he'd be facing a white male Democrat. Then what?

  • ||

    Odds are, he'd be facing a white male Democrat. Then what?

    Ideally, Rachel Maddow's loss of speech. Or the NYT building implosion.

  • CatoTheElder||

    If he were white, the Democrat would probably have to be openly gay to be competitive in the primary.

  • cynical||

    No, they'd have to watch the presidency go from a half black man to a black man.

  • o4||

    nah old soldier considering reagan was a moderate [CALIFORNIA/HOLLYWEED] gop'er who was previously a dem, a [UNIONZ] president, & had teh [GAYZ] son. the gop re-imaging of saint reagan is most amusing

  • Shorter o4||

    "[No known phonetic variant or equivalent]."

  • Mike M.||

    That's true, but you liberals have re-imaged him too. When he was office, guys like you were calling him the far right wing amiable moron who was going to start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union and get most of the earth's population killed.

  • o3||

    point taken however im gonna give him a break morphing into a gop'er...since we now know about the alzheimers !11!!1!!!

  • Apple||

    Reagan didn't have a gay son. He had a son who looked gay.

  • Ice Nine||

    That's so gay.

  • ||

    And LOVED Cock!

  • kilroy||

    Don't count GJ out just yet. He has a track record, a real one. Once the spotlight has been on Cain a while and the details (not a Bachmann 666 reference) of his positions start to come out, he'll start to slide.

    Johnson has an 8-year record of actually doing what he said he would and what is most needed right now.

  • ||

    You can hate Arabs and Muslims all you want and it's cool

    Once again, those aren't races.

    As to the bigotry against them, you have a viable point.

  • ||

    Arabs are not a race yet African Americans are?

    You are an idiot.

  • ||

    Arabs are not a race; they are an ethnicity. For that matter, African Americans are not a race, either; they are part of the black race.

  • Chris||

    When you call people idiots, you should at least make an effort to be correct. No, they are not a race. On the Yemen coast you will find Arabs whom are clearly negroid. In Lebanon, you will find the hottest Caucasoid redheads on the planet. In Palestine you will find a blood line that links to Jews who were forcefully converted in the 16th century.

    Clearly not a distinctive race.

  • Zeb||

    Race is a stupid concept anyway. There is as much or more genetic difference between people from different parts of Africa as there is between a random black American and a white American. Skin color is just not a sensible or useful way to divide up the human race. Interestingly, this makes racism both extremely stupid and very difficult to define.

  • "Moderate" Muslim Man||

    Damned skippy.

    Now, if you'll all kindly excuse me: I have my eight-year-old niece's clit to bob this afternoon.

    Of all the republicans that i will not be voting for (ie not Ron Paul or Johnson)I would like Cain to win.

    If only to see that 95% Democrat black vote change to 50%.

    Nothing has fucked up America culturally more over the past 30 years more then left wingers misusing the race card.

  • Fluffy||

    Here, I'll play devil's advocate for a second and attempt to impose sense on the inevitable liberal claim that the Tea Party is still racist even if TP voters support Cain.

    Here goes.

    I have met many liberals who believe that Republicans would not have any problem with income transfer and redistribution by the government if the country were entirely white.

    They literally think that Republicans would have no problem with the welfare state if all recipients "looked like them".

    They are convinced that the real, secret reason people on the right oppose the welfare state is because black people are receiving benefits.

    Therefore, opposing the welfare state is evidence of racism. Liking Herman Cain in that context doesn't disprove this racism, because since Cain doesn't require any support from the welfare state at the moment, we're prepared to tolerate him as "one of the good ones".

    I know, it's crazy, but I'm trying to put as good a face on it as I can.

  • ||

    I know, it's crazy, but I'm trying to put as good a face on it as I can.

    Not bad. It's an example of how racism is more about ideology and politics than it is about race.

    If one holds the "right" views, they can call Clarence Thomas every name in the book. Including ones that are steeped in racism. E.g., House Negro, a lawn jockey for Scalia, et cetera.

    My "correct" views protects me from racism charges.

  • Zuo||

    Considering the vast majority of Republicans have no problem with income transfer and redistributionism like social security, medicare, and medicaid...I'd say they might have a point.

    Social cons are very much in support of welfare schemes and safety nets and all that horseshit.

    White supremecist orgs almost universally call for a socialist oragnization of government. (What do you expect from collectivists who base everything on an ugly phenotype?)

    Their constant handwringing about needing to cut off any government spigots to "illegals" is further evidence. Note that they always want to end benefits for illegals, not end benefits outright.

  • ||

    Considering the vast majority of Republicans have no problem with income transfer and redistributionism like social security, medicare, and medicaid.
    -------------------------
    what bullshit. Most Repubs, hell most Americans, simply want back what they put into the Ponzi Security and Medicare, and most have a HUGE problem with Medicaid.

    That's okay; we get it. You're a Dem, your guy has made things worse, he has no record to run on or that you are willing to defend, so your alternative is to trash the other guy.

  • Zuo||

    Lol. obumma is a worthless piece of shit. You are a noob if you can't infer that from my comments.

    Most Americans want at least 4x what they put into the entitlements. Some gleefully seek up to 50000x what they put in. If what you said is true why wouldn't there be talk of axing the entitlements and cutting a check to everybody for what they paid in, less the amount the received. If they are parasites who have been living high off the welfare dollar, bill them for it. If they can't pay, indenture their fossilized theiving asses.

  • ||

    the check-cutting idea works for me. Politicians won't do it because they are a spineless sub-group of human. You are trying to claim that all Repubs love wealth transfer; Paul Ryan got a lot of heat for daring to say that Medicare is not sustainable. And a few others have talked about the need to reform SS, if for no other reason than it's, what, 80 years old? And Medicare is approaching 50. Times have changed just a bit since the inception of either.

  • Ska||

    In the future please save calling someone a noob for using the Famas, or some other gaming related infraction. Just call them a douche or what have you if they misinterpret your post.

    Republicans=Social Cons=White supremacists. And not even a scintilla of evidence beyond mere assertion. I wish I could say I was disappointed, but I would have to have had confidence in your intelligence for that to happen.

  • Zuo||

    Umm no. I didn't say they equal each other. Here are the statements in a pseudosyllogism for your feeble mind:

    1. The majority of Republicans support the SS, Medicare, and Medicaid entitlements. (More Rs want to dispose of this shit than Ds, but they are still a small minority). This shows that they don't have a problem with the concept of welfare.

    2. Social-cons believe there is a government imperitive to provide a social safety net. Social cons are the dominant force in TEAM RED, much to the chagrin of libertarian leaning Rs.

    3. White supremecists call for a socialist welfare state, one for "whites only". So we know that white racists DO tend to like welfare programs, just those that only help whites.

    4. As reason has covered before, and as everyone's flava of the week Cain himself has mentioned, SS benefits help whites over blacks disproptionally. This is a popular program with Rs, even though Rs (rightfully) hate things like WIC and subsidized housing, which happen to disproportionally favor blacks.

    What conclusion can you draw, other than that Republicans wouldn't have a problem with wealth transfer and redistributionism as long as the benificiaries are whities?

    Libertarian =/= Republican, and this is one of the reasons why.

  • Zuo||

    If there is no racist component to the tea party:

    Will we see them organizing protests against Romney, the originator of the "Obamacare" model that got them so riled up in the first place? Their opposition to Mitt thus far has been virtually nonexistant, just a few of them complaining on online blogs. Where are the "you lie!" accusations against Romney at the debates? Why isn't Romney shouted down at town halls or the equivalent when he goes to speak?

    Why do they demand bigger government to fortify the border and crack down on Mexicans, whose only crime is failing to get proper government authority and paperwork? Seeing as how they claim to be opposed to big government and all.

    Why do they clamor so loudly for English as an official national language? Why does it matter if a school in Las Cruces wants to teach in Spanish?

  • ||

    The Tea Party hates Romney and are not as a rule voting for him. That is why Cain is doing so well. What are they supposed to do, physically attack Romney?

  • ||

    Romney is everything to everyone. Nobody remembers which statements are the truth and which are lies.

    Unemployed people are frequently nativist and alot of tea partiers are unemployed.

    And we're talking about a black american, not a mexican running for president.

  • ||

    what does race have to do with Romneycare? In fact, much of the opposition to him IS because of health care; try keeping up. Maybe he isn't shouted down because that law only applied in Mass where the Dem-run Legislature was heavily involved as opposed to Obamacare, which is top-down, one-party, you vill comply rule.

    And it matters if schools want to teach in other languages becuase it sets those kids up for failure. Business in the US is done in English. Failure to learn it severely restricts one's upward mobility, but you probably already know that since you are transparently Democrat.

  • Plastic Fork||

    Hi Zuo –
    If you haven’t heard the complaints about RomneyCare then you have been willfully blind. Can’t help ya there.

    After having actually attended Tea Party events I can honestly say that immigration and official language issues weren’t even brought up, it was all economic and liberty topics, but since you have…

    I’m for making it easier for immigrants to come to this country legally by streamlining the process. It should be simpler and faster than it is today. However, I am concerned about illegal immigration for national security, public health, and general law enforcement reasons.

    While I don’t know if we should bother with an official language, I’m not opposed to it. The main reason I prefer teaching English is the simple fact that immigrants that can’t speak the language are at a terrible disadvantage. Finding work, obtaining medical assistance, obtaining emergency services, etc… is more difficult if you can’t speak the common language. Postponing the learning of English does immigrants no favors – it hurts them. Why do you want to keep them down? Why do you hate them?(tweak) heh heh

    Why am I doing this after saying I wouldn’t? Nothing I can say will make any difference to you... guess I like occasionally tilting at windmills.

  • ||

    Good effort, though, Plastic Fork. I'd add that another concern about English is that it is a unifying factor for the country. Mostly it's leftists who want us to become a multilingual/multicultural paradise like Yugoslavia.

  • Zuo||

    It's not that I want to become a multilingual/multicultural paradise. Nor is there any value in "unifying". People should be free to use any language they please in any sphere of life they please, public or private.

    Obviously markets will bear out that attempting to speak Icelandic or Navajo in NYC is not going to work, and it will be necessary to learn another language likely English. But in areas of the country where it is viable to live your life speaking Spanish, why not let them? Why impose your tongue on them?

    From my experience its that a lot of Americans are nativist paranoid assholes who are afraid the Mexicans will be plotting all kinds of nefarious deeds in their secret code language. It simply infuriates them that people can say something without them being able to listen in and understand it.

  • ||

    Nor is there any value in "unifying".

    Hmm. Not sure I agree. I'd rather live in a society with a universal lingua franca, than one split into groups that cannot communicate with each other linguistically.

    In the public sphere, we have a goddam hard enough time understanding each other with one language. Can you imagine if every law, regulation, etc. had to be published in multiple languages? The signal loss in translation would be crippling.

    So, sure, speak what you want. But don't expect any slack if you don't speak the native language, whether here, in Europe, or in Asia.

  • jtuf||

    Zuo, the right has no monopoly on expecting everyone to learn English. I've read a couple of writings by Liberal Jews denouncing Yiddish and Hebrew speaking American Jewish communities that don't teach English to their kids. Alan M. Dershowitz's comments in The Vanishing American Jew are an example.

    Personally, I recommend teaching English to one's kids, but I understand the desire to teach one's ancestral language. An English +1 strategy where every American learns English plus 1 ancestral language allows the best of both.

  • Zuo||

    Fine do that with your kids. But you and the rest of the Americans are wrong to demand that anybody else should do it as well.

    If English is truly worth learning the markets will bear it out and non-English speakers will learn to speak it voluntarily. The days of 19th century empire and the cultural impostition that went with it are over.

  • Art Vandelay||

    "[T]he Americans." "Empire." How adorable. Had you not carelessly forgotten to include the equally limp-wristed "hegemony," you would have scored the standard libertard hat trick.

    You're roughly as "libertarian," at bottom, as a three-way with Helen Thomas and Janeane Garofalo. Pfffftt.

  • Shorter Zuo||

    "'Balkanization?' What's that? DERP -- !!!"

  • Zuo||

    India, dumbass. Look it up. A succesful and stable country nowhere near fracture, with dozens of languages spoken with speakers numbering in the millions, tens of millions, and hundreds of millions.

    Or keep using your strawman fallacy of a post-Austrohungarian communist state as proof that the government must force their language preferences on its population lest there be troublez.

  • CatoTheElder||

    I seem to recall that India and Pakistan were on the verge of a potential nuclear war because a bunch of suicide-vest attired Urdu- and Kashmiri-speaking militants burst into Parliament with machine guns blazing.

    Hardly a picture of stability.

    A few years earlier, aggrieved Punjabi-speaking Sikhs assassinated India's Hindi-speaking prime minister to avenge her attack on the Golden Temple.

    A few years later, Urdu-speaking Muslims launched an attack against Hindi-speakers in Mumbai.

    Language has been a huge issue in India since decolonialization. For example, the anti-Hindi movement in Tamil Nadu. That conflict was resolved pretty well by making English an official language of India.

    One need not be fluent in Hindi to do well in India ... but if not Hindi, one damned well better be fluent in English.

    In other words, India has a Hindi/English plus one policy on language.

  • Zuo||

    Lol @ you pretending Indira's bullshit razing of Amritsar and the Kashmir conflict is due to language. If you had the slightest bit of honesty you would admit that it is purely religion. Language had NOTHING to do with it, and you know it. I know you know it, because you are familiar with these events in the first place, which is more than can be said for 99% of Americans.

  • moop||

    are you a wumaodang troll? i am assuming zuo is chinese. and judging from your comments you are just as intellectually stimulating as other da lu gou. please go fuck yourself

  • Geoff Nathan||

    The problem with this analysis of South Asia is that Hindi and Urdu are the same language, just written with different alphabets.
    There is no need to have an 'official language' law (aside from the fact that the concept doesn't belong on a libertarian blog).
    All immigrants in all countries over the past 4000 years have learned to speak the local language within a generation. Regardless of the presence or absence of welfare.
    I teach sociolinguistics and I can point you to references.
    So it's non-libertarian and completely unnecessary. And probably (really) racist, to boot.

  • Comerade Andropov||

    Over 300 dialects.

    India don't have rabble rousers agitating the very worst of human nature for political gain on a scale you capitalist pigs do. India remembers and can contrast their Soviet years to today. We will not allow you to do the same by electing Herman Cain. It takes a genration to deprogram teh childrunz and your attempt will be feeble as all your base are belong to us.

    Comrades, you have to understand we Soviets want the US broken up into three countries so you capitalist pigs will be fighting each other like the Balkanized Europeans. The workers of the world will unite and bring the greatest peace man has ever known under our influence.

    Do not be fooled by Glasnost comrades. We will set the reset button once a messiah is in place and the workers of the world will unite to faction, fracton and Balkanize your country fast and furiously and you won't know what hit until its too late.

    You do not even see the many ironies pigs. You think you won the Cold-War you stupid capitalist pigs and it is your country that will be divided as your messiah and ours work to unite the workers of the world.

    "multilingual/multicultural paradise like Yugoslavia."

    The problem with pointint to Yugoslavia, Canada or Belgium is that it leaves out Switzerland (4 official languages, and they do it quite well).

    That said, while I hate the thought of compelling anyone to do anything, at some point, having to provide a Klingoneese interpreter (check it out!) suggests that a single language for all governmental business sort of makes sense on a practical level.

  • Zuo||

    So you want to force them to speak English "for their own good". How very paternalist of you.

    The "tea party" candidates CONSTANTLY rant about the need to "cluse urrr borderz" and make English the official language. Like, every debate. See: anal-leakage santorum and michelle bachman, and yes, herman cain. Hell, the whole reason Perry got shanked was because he didn't hate Mexicans enough to appease the tea party base.

  • JoJo Zeke||

  • ||

    "Force"? No. Nobody is talking about banning Spanish. But it's absurd that every damn garbage can in the country also has to say "Basura." If I moved to Mexico, I wouldn't expect them to relabel everything for my convenience. Learning the language of your new country is for everyone's good.

    (Yeah, I also gripe about having to "Press 1 for English." It's another bit of the inefficiency that RC Dean points out.)

  • Zuo||

    It HAS to say "basura"? There is a law requiring this? Then it sounds like Spanish is already an official language. Good luck fighting that. What private sector waste removal companies decide to put on their products doesn't bother me. Nor should it you.

  • Plastic Fork||

    Hi Zuo –
    So, you don’t want to teach the common language to immigrants, but how do you feel about requiring the state and businesses to provide bilingual staff, forms, web sites, etc…? Remember, you said “people should be free to use any language they please in any sphere of life they please”… You can’t maintain that position if you require people to accommodate other languages. I’m not saying you want to force government and business to be bilingual, but that often seems to be the position of those that support bilingual or Spanish only classrooms. I’m only seeking clarification.

    It is true, by the way, that it IS HARDER to find work, obtaining medical care, obtaining emergency services, etc. if you don't speak the language. People can do what they want, but there are consequences. I just wanted to make you aware of the cost.

    I'm not sure I understand how not giving in state tuition to illegal aliens equals hatred. Perry made a good case for why illegals should get in state tuition, but he tripped up when he attacked the motives of those that disagree with him. His attack on the motives of others is what I didn't like. Perhaps there is a lesson for you in that. ;) heh heh

  • Zuo||

    It is true, by the way, that it IS HARDER to find work, obtaining medical care, obtaining emergency services, etc. if you don't speak the language. People can do what they want, but there are consequences. I just wanted to make you aware of the cost.

    I totally agree. I just don't think you should compel them to do so by force of law. IF it is beneficial to learn English (and it is) people will do it themselves. Let the markets work. They will, given due time. But let everybody make their own decision.

    As for the legal issues: they would be greatly reduced if the amount of government is lessened. But legal rights exist regardless of the language the perp speaks. I would hope that would still be the case even if the US did have an official state-mandated language?

  • Plastic Fork||

    Awesome! We have some common ground. :)

    Yeah, I tend to agree as well about the legal issues. To that end, getting government out of education altogether would defuse a ton of controversial issues. Issues like religion in school, eco-religion in school, sex education, language choice, gender issues, etc. would be gone. …Well, I suppose they would still exist, but they would be handled on an individual basis as opposed to a government “one size fits all” mandate.

  • Barely Suppressed Rage||

    "racist component to the tea party"??

    There is a decided difference between any large group of individuals containing a "racist component" versus the entire group being racist.

    So - is there a "racist component" of the Tea Party? I'd guess probably yes. How many people are we talking about? A fraction of a percent of the total number of self-identified Tea Partiers?

    How about we try to prove there is no "racist component" to the Democrat party? Because there sure as shit is - particularly the ones in power now. E.g., Attorney General Eric Holder, who submarined the prosecution of the Black Panthers who were intidimidating voters in Philly.

  • Zuo||

    Arrgh whats with all the "yeah but democrats are shithead asslickers even more!" posts? You don't have to tell ME!

    The entire democrat party is a coalition of whiny victim groups held together by their common belief in collective group-identity and their opposition to free markets and individual liberty (since those are anathema to group-think collectivism).

    Why do they demand bigger government to fortify the border and crack down on Mexicans

    They demand a crack down on anyone entering the country illegally, not "Mexicans." Every Tea Partier that I've heard on radio or TV or spoken to has no problem with anyone - Mexicans included - coming here legally. They don't care what country you're from; they don't want people pouring in illegally and then claiming the benefits handed out by the government.

  • Zuo||

    The question is: Why do they want to crack down on the immigrants and not the benefits handed out by the government? ...especially given the tea party's alleged small government ideology and all.

  • Anonymous Coward||

    Will we see them organizing protests against Romney, the originator of the "Obamacare" model that got them so riled up in the first place?

    It must be awfully loud in that echo chamber you live in.

    The Tea Party Targets Romney to Block his 2012 Nomination

  • o4||

    zuo - im on ur side here but romney isnt the best illustration considering the constant issue morphing. hell i wouldnt vote for him as a dem...which he practically was anyway

    Courtlan Milloy, in yesterday's WP took care of all the Cain issues in one fell swoop. 1. Cain is not a real black; 2. blacks are conservative, but they know that the GOP is racist; 3. the tea party is using the house N (Cain) to confuse blacks; 4. when Cain does not get nominated, it will confirm that the GOP is racist.

    It is all so simple really.

  • cynical||

    Of course, if Cain doesn't get nominated, that will also prove that the GOP is racist.

  • GOP||

    when Cain does not get nominated, it will confirm that the GOP is racist.
    Of course, if Cain doesn't get nominated, that will also prove that the GOP is racist.

    HA!! When and if we nominate Cain, that will prove we are not racist! That's logic!

  • cynical||

    Just misread it.

  • ||

    Actually, the article was liked to in an earlier comment.

    The article was esentially complimentary to Cain. The falsehoods in the article were a litany of accusations of racism against Republicans.

  • Black voter||

    I will not listen to views that are racist, why would I listen to a an idiot who sold out his own people? We are not brainwashed like that Uncle Tom says.

    I don't care If Obama descended from slave traders and Herman Cain didn't. I know Herman Cain is an idoit because he doesn't support Black causes so he's a sellout to his own people. Barack wants to give us socialism and Herman wants to free us from it. How bizarre is that. Herman disagrees with 90%+ of his own people because he wants us to be slaves to racist ideology.

    Frick, Frack, WTF!

    Jerry Seinfeld style:

    Ever notice on cable television we went from frick to frack when it comes to fuck?

    Why?

    Frick was a much better word to use for fuck than frack because frick rhymes with d!ck and pr!ck of which both are used for fucking.

    And don't even get me started on those American Autumn Occupy Wall St. protestors.

    I don't think there's any c'mon sense left in the world so goodbye. I'm on my way to protest fracking shale because its fricking the environment.

  • Obamatron||

    That is so stupid. What's it even supposed to mean. You conservatives and libertarians only want to destroy the environment all for the worship of money you greedy retarded bastards.

    I bet you believe in state's rights too so you can go back to slavery you fucking Hitler fucking capitalist pigs.

  • Hermanator||

    I can change all that by removing the catalyst and get these kids back to thinking critically. But so do you libertarians have to start and stop getting distracted by shiny things and look at the the potential.

    I have a vision "we win they lose" and I need all your help. Don't allow the shiny things to distract you we can get back to a place your ideas will flourish and the kids will be wanting to hear them in droves as they contrast capitalism to socialism in the booming environment I will provide if you will support me.

  • Laughing Ghost||

    White-Black. As a Native American, I hope you all kill each other.

  • Barely Suppressed Rage||

    That's very Christian of you.

  • Plastic Fork||

    Are you a racist too Laughing Ghost? lol

  • Laughing Ghost||

    I don't know, is it racist to find whites and blacks equally moronic?
    Maybe it just makes me an Arab...
    You may now call me Mohammed's Ghost.
    On the other hand, most whites in this country have a lot of black blood in them, and most blacks have white blood in them, so maybe if you all ran at each other reallly fast, you might meld back together like a scene out of the "Dark Crystal". And since both groups have Native American blood in them, the result would not be completely retarded.

  • ||

    Completely retarded?

    How about the notion that "most whites in this country have a lot of black blood in them"?

    Yep, completely retarded.

  • Laughing Ghost||

    No need to thank me, Laughing Ghost enlightens the ignorant freely.

  • Plastic Fork||

    Well, you didn't just "find whites and blacks equally moronic". You said, "White-Black. As a Native American, I hope you all kill each other."

    And yeah, I would say wishing death upon people because of their race is pretty racist. lol

  • tattletale||

    Just so you know I'm reporting you to jihadist.com.

    Why you ask?

    For defiling the name and image of Mohammed(PBUH) pretending to be his ghost as if to lead Muslims astray in Christ-like fashion.

    Jihadist.com friends on their way to Paradise want to meet and party with you. They say it'll be a blast but that you won't be able to go with them to Paradise since they want the girls(virgins) for themselves and you're such a stud.

  • Laughing Ghost||

    Laughing Ghost thanks you for a lovely meal and a successful catch considering my net has such gaping holes.

  • tattletale||

    Be my Guest and become a fellow Hermanator and perhaps within the environment happy days are here again we can get even the Red man to the table of many.

  • Chris||

    I've always considered Obama marrying of Michelle to be the equivalent of Henry IV saying 'Paris is well worth a Mass.' He had no real ties to the black community until that point, but the street activist racket seemed a promising step into the realm of careerist politics for him, and necessary sacrifices had to be made.

  • Zuo||

    Indeed. His true love is more along the lines of Larry Sinclair.

  • ||

    That begs brings up the question of why Michelle married him, seeing as how he hadn't decimated her armies and killed her brothers.

  • Barry||

    Actually I was Barry Soetero until I met Mechelle and she convinced me to embrace my heritage as a true African American and the dreams of my father were also her dreams.

    I have only have one left unfulfilled and that is to play Abe Lincoln. Please pass over Herman Cain, vote Romney or don't vote.

    I need Romney as the nominee so we can have a Gore vs Bush debacle with rioting in every city so I can fulfill my last dream of my father and me.

  • CatoTheElder||

    "So in the interest of intellectual honesty, can they please drop the notion that the GOP/Tea Party are irredeemably racist and work up some other accusations?"

    No.

  • ||

    Really. The accusations of racism were never based on facts at all, so why should the continued lack of supporting facts, and even the presence of countervailing facts, make any difference?

  • ||

    I'm not a Cain fan at all and won't vote for him, but I do think I'd get a hell of a lot of enjoyment out of watching the Left making idiotically racist statements and the Right playing the race victim card. Tu quoque!

  • Barry||

    Thank you for your vote for Romney or no vote. Anybody but Cain. I need Romney to fulfill one last dream of my father and me. I want to able to play Abe Lincoln and I need election 2000 to get there. FOX News will be providing the coverage of my historic win.

  • ||

    But how then do they explain the vaulting popularity of Herman Cain in the GOP primary?

    I heard it explained- on MSNBC, I think- that the vaulting popularity of Herman Cain is simply nasty, racist conservatives attempting to camouflage their profound hatred of African-Americans.

  • ||

    Fuck, this pithy thought of mine doesn't get to the end....

    If Samuel L. Jackson got the Republican nomination, there's still be liberal occutards complaining that he wasn't "Black enough."

  • JB||

    Considering that Obama is only half-black, it means that Obama voters are twice as racist as Cain voters.
