French Farm Fury

Your photo of the day, from a protest in Brussels over low milk prices:

Let the government set prices, and the next thing you know, blood (OK, milk) will run in the streets.

UPDATE: Since the protest is in Belgium, I assume that much of it is being conducted in French. At the very least, the milk-soaked cops are muttering "merde." However, strictly speaking, this is Pan-European Farm Fury.

Gasp! Raw milk?!? How can this blog be so flippant about bioterrorism?

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:28PM|

That must be why the cops need the shields.

Xeones|10.6.09 @ 3:55PM|

This is the most awesome picture i have seen in months.

Hottie16|10.6.09 @ 4:25PM|

Yeah, but what is your GF doing in Belgium?

|10.6.09 @ 3:59PM|

Milk: it does a bobby good...

Humanure|10.6.09 @ 3:59PM|

"This is the most awesome picture i have seen in months."

More awesome than the porn?

Spoonman|10.6.09 @ 4:00PM|

Somebody had to be the pedantic one and point out that Brussels is in Belgium, and I guess that's me.

|10.6.09 @ 4:10PM|

The guy squirting the milk is French.

Rattachiste|10.6.09 @ 4:42PM|

Brussels is in Belgium

Not for long if we have anything to do with it!

Rattachiste|10.6.09 @ 4:53PM|

Wallonie Française!

Isaac Bartram|10.6.09 @ 5:18PM|

ICBW, but I think the EU sets milk prices and it has a lot of farmers who used to be able to influence their home governments pissed off.

If that's the case it's quite likely the French farmers are protesting there since the French do seem to get their dudgeon a lot higher than everyone else.

Spoonman|10.6.09 @ 4:00PM|

Also, a protest against low prices? What in the fuck?

SpongePaul|10.6.09 @ 4:01PM|

I take it, it is the farmers/producers complaining and protesting, not the avg Sven

Xeones|10.6.09 @ 4:01PM|

Oh, porn counts? In that case, it's the most awesome picture i've seen in almost half an hour.

|10.6.09 @ 4:09PM|

After you see enough porn, there comes a time where nothing is "awesome" anymore. This is definitely something new and it is more awesome than any porn I've seen since at least October 17, 2007.

But then I haven't worn out my welcome on the lactation genre yet, so YMMV.

Hottie16|10.6.09 @ 4:20PM|

I'm guessing you aren't an Erin Andrews fan...

|10.6.09 @ 4:01PM|

Oh, yes, you jackbooted thug! Raise your shield against the spray of milk! You're cheating death there, wuss! I know it's not spelled right here, but what a...milktoast.

Xeones|10.6.09 @ 4:01PM|

Also, a protest against low prices? What in the fuck?

Farmers love them some price controls.

|10.6.09 @ 4:03PM|

/snark

Oh, was THAT the reason we disapprove of Ag. Subsidies?

/snark off

GILMORE|10.6.09 @ 4:09PM|

Jeez, does the cop really need a shield for the milk spray? What a wuss. Next thing they'll truncheon the cow.

smartass sob|10.6.09 @ 7:02PM|

Over here the SWAT guys would probably empty their magazines into it.

Zeb|10.6.09 @ 4:10PM|

" Farmers love them some price controls."

Unless they are the other type of price controls.

|10.6.09 @ 4:10PM|

Time for another reading of Mencken's The Husbandman

|10.6.09 @ 4:12PM|

http://scottmurphy.house.gov/N.....tID=138994

Congressman Murphy introduced a plan to cull dairy herds so prices will go back up despite my efforts to tell him this is stupid because it will raise the price of milk for American families when we are already struggling. I basically asked him why he hates poor people. He sent me an e-mail in typical politician speak that said he has to solve tough problems.

Isaac Bartram|10.6.09 @ 5:24PM|

I seem to recall a big dairy herd cull back in the eighties after they ran out of room to store all the cheese (even with giving the stuff away they ended up with huge stockpiles). It seemed like the price of hamburger dropped about 50% and staued there for about three years.

Barack Obama|10.6.09 @ 4:13PM|

"Somebody had to be the pedantic one and point out that Brussels is in Belgium, and I guess that's me"

They speak Belgian there.

|10.6.09 @ 4:14PM|

Interesting pic, though. In the US, A) the cow never would have been allowed on the street for the protest, B) the protestors never would have been allowed on the same side of the barracades as the cop, and C) the farmer and cop would both have been tased and beaten by every cop in the vicinity. PETA would have counter-protested.

Jim|10.6.09 @ 4:20PM|

"Somebody had to be the pedantic one and point out that Brussels is in Belgium, and I guess that's me"

They speak Belgian there.

Actually, they speak Dutch mostly. Now who's being pedantic?

Fitzroy|10.6.09 @ 4:38PM|

Actually, they speak French and Flemish (not Dutch, although similar), and there is a small minority of German. The French and Flemish sides are also deeply divided, and have threatened to split the country more than a few times over the years.
There is always someone more pedantic than you on the Internet.

|10.6.09 @ 4:58PM|

French protests are more phlegmish.

|10.6.09 @ 5:16PM|

I do some business with some Belgians. These guys speak Dutch (and other languages, but Dutch first).

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:21PM|

Udder contempt for the law.

SpongePaul|10.6.09 @ 4:25PM|

ugh!

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:27PM|

I just can't believe it took that long and I was first, LOL.

|10.6.09 @ 4:30PM|

But we're now cowed.

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:31PM|

I almost spewed cheap red wine all over my laptop. Nice work :)

Hottie16|10.6.09 @ 4:24PM|

If the Girl in the Daily-Brickbats was a real cop this picture would be kinda hot.

Link is Safe For Work [same as in brickbats]

Hobo Chang Ba|10.6.09 @ 4:24PM|

Sadly, the government is actually on the right side in this scenario, according to the article. The farmers are demanding protectionism and government mandates of higher prices. The EU luckily still stands by free trade.

Mango Punch|10.6.09 @ 4:39PM|

"Sadly"

Isn't it good when the government gets it right?

Jonas|10.6.09 @ 4:44PM|

I think what's supposed to be sad is that we're cheering on protectionist protesters.

|10.6.09 @ 4:28PM|

It looks Photoshopped to me. The angle at which the shooter is aiming doesn't really jive with where the policeman is standing, and if you compare the size of the flying milk droplets to the second policeman standing in the background they look HUGE.

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:30PM|

That's how they faked the moon landings! Now even reporters can fake history with technology once only posessed by NASA.

@|10.6.09 @ 4:33PM|

I agree. Then again, the cow's name is Peter North...

|10.6.09 @ 5:34PM|

Maybe it isn't really milk...

John Tagliaferro|10.7.09 @ 12:52AM|

Sometimes the milk is only milk.

John Tagliaferro|10.7.09 @ 12:53AM|

Or Dale Jr. is milking a bull?

MattXIV|10.6.09 @ 6:09PM|

It's a wide angle lense distorting the perspective - stuff in the foreground on the edges ends up looking larger than it is.

|10.6.09 @ 4:32PM|

Gasp! Raw milk?!? How can this blog be so flippant about bioterrorism?

There could be pregnant women* in the crowd! Won't someone please think of the children?

*You know what irks me? Is when they ask every woman of child-birthin' years if she is pregnant or not when giving out raw milk cheese samples, etc. I'd rather not declare the contents of my uterus in front of the entire market.

|10.6.09 @ 7:07PM|

Why, do you have something to hide?

John Tagliaferro|10.6.09 @ 4:41PM|

Why is Dale Ernheardt Junior in the middle of the street milking a cow?

Johnny Longtorso|10.6.09 @ 4:50PM|

I'd rather not declare the contents of my uterus in front of the entire market.

"I'm carrying the hellspawn of my dark lord Satan, who probably won't get hurt by some raw milk cheese".

Humanure|10.6.09 @ 5:01PM|

"Actually, they speak Dutch mostly. Now who's being pedantic"

They also speak Flemmish and Welsh.

Death Panelist|10.6.09 @ 5:04PM|

I hope that's a cow.

|10.6.09 @ 5:30PM|

If it was a bull...

let's just say that European sodomy laws are not that liberal.

|10.6.09 @ 5:14PM|

Mon Dieu. . .that's the greatest protest photo ever. Even better than the burning monk!

|10.6.09 @ 5:42PM|

Aresen,

You, too, with the threaded comments?

You broke my heart! You broke my heart!

MJ|10.6.09 @ 8:09PM|

What's the internal pressure of that cow? That's a long spray.

|10.6.09 @ 9:20PM|

The cows in Belgium get all the left over locally produced beer. Which explains why cows in Belgium are so happy, why they can be used as a weapon against facsism, and why you can get really drunk from drinking milk there.

John Tagliaferro|10.7.09 @ 12:55AM|

And they have the metric system.

|10.6.09 @ 9:15PM|

The Belgians drink a lot of beer. Just proves that a good nation of folks consuming lots of good locally produced brews don't take no shit from the gubmit issued fascist. And we won't hesitate to squirt ye eyes with the milk of the udders if we hast to!

JB|10.6.09 @ 10:15PM|

'Low prices suck, duh!!!1! We should be forced to pay $2 million for every GM car.'

Starving Peasant|10.6.09 @ 10:55PM|

You know, I remember the days when we used to protest HIGH food prices.

John Tagliaferro|10.7.09 @ 12:56AM|

Get back to your tasks you whining sot!

|10.7.09 @ 12:23AM|

I have 2 things to say.

First, is that David Coulthard?

Second, I had no idea a cow could squirt milk that far.

justin lancaster|10.7.09 @ 12:38AM|

That cop's shield reminds me of one of my socks.
