Los Angeles Schools Train Students To Promote Obamacare

The Los Angeles Unified School District will use a state grant to train teens to promote ObamaCare to family members. Covered California, the state's health insurance exchange, announced grants of $37 million on May 14 to promote the nationally unpopular law.

LAUSD will receive $990,000. The district listed as a primary outcome for its project, “Teens trained to be messengers to family members.”

Covered California spokeswoman Sarah Soto-Taylor said staff have not questioned this goal.  

“We have confidence that the model LA Unified brought to the table will be successful in reaching our target population, which includes family members of students,” she said.

    Citizens should have concerns here with respect to opportunity cost: the time spent on (unlicensed educators) "educating" family members and friends about the new health care law could have been spent otherwise, and this educational activity would be difficult to match with any aspect of state-approved curricula. We should also have money concerns: this kind of spending will not encourage taxpayers to approve any further increases in funding for our state schools, since this story simply reinforces the argument that our government wastes the educational resources the voters make available. Turning youth into propogandists is inconsistent with developing critical thinking skills, and we are reminded that one-third of L.A. Unified students do not graduate from high school under current curricular requirements. Given the totality of these concerns, it is not easy to justify this new use of the available resources of time, energy, and money.
