When it comes to government, Illinois tops at least one list.

The Prairie State has more units of local government than any other state in the union, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2012 Census of Governments.

Illinois has 6,968 local governments, according to preliminary data released Thursday. That's 2,000 more than Pennsylvania, which is No. 2 on the list.
