Which Country Is Officially Called "Oriental"?
"Oriental" has meant different things at different times and in different places. The Orient Express went to Istanbul. More recently, and perhaps in the U.S. more than in Europe, "Oriental" has largely referred to East Asians. Indeed, Ritchey Produce Co., Inc. v. State (Ohio 1999), turned on whether a Lebanese-American was entitled to benefit from an affirmative action program that covered "Orientals." The court said "no," endorsing a rule that defined the term to refer to "all persons having origins in any of the original people of the Far East, including China, Japan and Southeast Asia."
But to my knowledge, only one country's official name actually labels it Oriental. What is that?

Uruguay.
Why? Because the meaning of the Latin root of "oriental" is "eastern", and Uruguay is the Republic East of the Uruguay (river).
Indeed. And its Founding Fathers, at least as to its current incarnation, are the 33 Orientals.
Don't tell Homer Simpson.
That scene makes me chuckle whenever I remember it.
Why are you asking me? How should I know?
ChatGPT gave him the wrong answer for his homework?
Eugene, you are American. So you should be pronouncing the word the way real Americans do: “Oriennel.” (Rhymes with "Fennel.")
Was this a podcast?
“Oriennel.”
I'm a native born American, 54 years old. I've never heard anyone who wasn't drunk at the time pronounce oriental that way.
Etymologically, one country's name literally means "Orient"
https://www.etymonline.com/word/orient
from Latin orientem (nominative oriens) "the rising sun, the east, part of the sky where the sun rises,"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Japan
Both Nippon and Nihon literally mean "the sun's origin", that is, where the sun originates
But that's an excellent trivia q.
It's also true -- Japan is East of the rest of Asia, and hence it *is* the land where the sun originates from.
The Duchy of Grand Fenwick.
If we go by words for east in general instead of the particular form oriental, East Pakistan comes to mind. There aren't a lot of directional countries.
Also Timor-Leste aka East Timor. Since Timor and Leste both mean 'east' the country's name means "east east".
The Orient Express only goes as far as Istanbul while most of the Russian Federation is in the orient.
Why, Austria of course. Derived from old German for "Eastern Realm".
Racist programs are racist.
It's like "Negro" -- a word you once were supposed to use and now aren't -- no particular reason other than fiat.
And for a fun time, tell a bunch of young Black women what NAACP stands for. Hint -- they don't know -- and won't believe you...
I'm partial to the suggestion that the NAACP should update its terminology to become the National Association for the Advancement of African-Americans.
Does Elon Musk really need anyone helping him to advance?
Naaaa.
Lady Gaga (who appeared in a "Soprano's" episode, anyone remember which one? it was the one where AJ got in trouble for vandalizing the school) used it in "Born this way" (of course you have to be born first)
"You're Black, white, beige, chola descent
You're Lebanese, you're Orient!"
Frank
I bet they do know.
They absolutely know.
To the extent that this is real, that reaction you got was not one of incredulousness about the name of the NAACP. It was about incredulousness about some old weirdo lecturing them on something they already knew.
You can can still use negro, but only in context of the Negro Leagues, and the United Negro College Fund.
Or you can use its derivative when rapping.
or in Barry Hussein Osama's auto-erotic-biography
To be fair, I would not believe Dr. Ed if he said that water was wet. But they of course do know, so they would not need to "believe" you.
Water isn't wet -- not until it melts.
Yesterday folks were clearing sidewalks with leaf blowers.
Orient Point is the eastern-most point of the north fork of Long Island. Now I know why.
Just be careful not to leave an open Coke in the refrigerator. Those Orientals have a strange sense of humor.
The Eastern Roman Empire
(It lives on in my heart)
I had to look it up, and it would have been about my 150th guess.
That said, it's really surprising that the US had pro-Asian affirmative action programs in 1999, years after Harvard had started enforcing Asian quotas.
They're not quotas, they're holistic! /sarc
Where does the verb "orient" come from? Traditionally, maps were viewed with the east at the top, not the north. To orient a map, place the orient at the top. I think - I have only had one cup of coffee and may still be disoriented.
Only in the Middle Ages.
Anyone using a compass is gong to have either North or South on top, the Chinese and Arabs had South on top -- don't ask me why.
The Europeans (in the age of exploration) had North on top because of Polaris -- the North Star -- and its use in navigation.
Does that mean modern maps should be borealed rather than oriented?
And what name should be given to orienteering?
Go east, young man!
Some Countey in S America (I can't remember which) is the BLANK Republic D' Oriente. Maybe the Bolivarian Rwpublic d'Oriente. I think.
