"I Was Told There Would Be a Handbasket"
A funny line I just saw; don't know who first came up with it.

of "Deplorables"??? don't get it.
Get it now, we Ass-burgers are a little slow with the metaphors,
Frank "what's this on my Shingle??"
lol I like it.
I’ve seen a bumper sticker with the version, “Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?” (Another: “I’m pro-accordion, and I vote!”)
"“I’m pro-accordion..."
Reason enough to hate you.
I'd heard it before as "Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?"
searching "I was told there would be"... on yt lead to this classic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctOBMFznkto
this one's got better boobage,

Frank "There should be Danish"
I had a buddy in the Army and one of his favorite phrases for any new patrol was; "Where are we ... and why are we in this hand basket?" Usually muttered under his breath so "Top" didn't hear him.
Marine Corpse (HT B Hussein Obama) version was "Effed up as a Football Bat/Basketball Glove/Tennis Helmet"
You are fortunate the Volokh Conspirator Board of Censors does not permit conservatives to be described in straightforward terms at this blog.
Sometimes he makes we wish we were in the UK so he could be called the c*nt that he is without fear of serious recriminations.
If you are a conservative, no worries -- you can write anything you wish here without fear of consequence.
If you are a liberal or libertarian, however, the censorship risk is always hovering at the Volokh Conspiracy.
Guess i'm lucky to be a conservative.
Miss your Namenda "Reverend" Jerry S? you left out "Bitter Klinger"
and what's with the shame over your Almer Mater https://law.udc.edu/ Yeah, I know, named after a Dead White Dude (Probably "Bitter" about his premature Lymphoma) sure there wasn't any kind of donation or kid pro crow to get the school named after him...
Embrace UCD SOL Jerry!!!!! not everyone can be a Yale man!
Frank
I just found a cartoon where St. Peter tells a soul, "I've reviewed your file...take this handbasket."
Conservative humor.
Apparently does not exist.
"Reverend" Jerry, you're are #1 best seller (With apologies to "Seinfeld" "The Jerk Store" episode (actually "the Comeback" Season 8 Episode 13) "Seinfeld" laced it up every episode, right up to the Finale, which in retrospect, isn't as bad as I thought watching it,
but then again, I like the X-files re-boot
Frank "the Truth is out there and about nothing"
I've known the expression "Going to Hell in a handbasket" for a VERY long time, but I've never understood what the "handbasket" has to do with it. Does anyone here know?
It's the handbasket at the end of the whole nine yards and it's full of tinkers' dams.
Just that you should get one before you get on the Interstate of Good Intentions
The interwebs sez, the heads of criminals being guillotined drop into a handbasket. Presumably, they are going "straight to Hell in a handbasket".
Maybe I’m nitpicky today, but I prefer “I always thought there’d be a hand basket” (“I was told” being factually incorrect; the familiar saying implies that a handbasket can be sufficient, but says nothing about whether one is necessary).
PS. On the general topic of Hadean sayings: I don’t believe in Hell, but if I’m wrong and get sent there, I desperately want to see the bats leaving as I enter. *That* would be a sight.
Wait: Isn't the point of Hell denying the sinners whatever they desperately want?
Wait: Isn't the point of Hell denying the sinners whatever they desperately want?
Yes, but also to hold it just beyond their ability to get it. Like Tantalus.
I guess so. But I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t start denying until I actually get inside. What’s another moment or two when they’ll have me for an eternity?
It sounds to me like a comeback after being told to "Go to hell!"
I've heard a victim of the insult ask "Got a handbasket?"
We had this District Court Judge here in Buncombe County who responded to a defendant he had just sentenced. The defendant said "Judge, you're a sonofabitch."
Judge Styles: "How'd you find out?" Everybody in the packed courtroom roared. And the judge didn't even punish the contempt.
Same place the Formula you can't buy to carry in the Handbasket you don't have. Where's Pete Booty-Judge getting his?
