Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Reports Jimmy Kimmel to Capitol Police for a "Threat of Violence"
.@ABC, this threat of violence against me by @jimmykimmel has been filed with the @CapitolPolice. pic.twitter.com/nxYX1LF2jK
— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene???????? (@RepMTG) April 6, 2022
Washington Post (Eugene Scott) reports:
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel joked about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in his opening monologue earlier this week after she labeled some in her party "pro-pedophile" for supporting Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
"Where is Will Smith when you really need him?" Kimmel asked, a reference to Smith's Oscar show storming of the stage and slap of comedian Chris Rock over a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith….
[Greene's] spokesman, Nick Dyer, said Friday that "threats against Congresswoman Greene invoking Jimmy Kimmel have been coming into our office."
Dyer also pointed to a tweet Greene posted Thursday featuring a voice mail she said she received after Kimmel's monologue. "I would pay good money to watch Jimmy Kimmel bash your (expletive) head in with a baseball bat," a male caller said. "It would be so (expletive) hysterical."
But of course Kimmel's line is a joke, and even if serious is a statement of opinion—that Greene deserves to be slapped—and not a true threat that he or someone in league with him would slap her. (For more on the "true threat" exception to the First Amendment, see Watts v. U.S. (1969).) Nor could Kimmel be faulted for supposedly inciting threats by third parties, since there's no reason to think his speech was intended to and likely to produce imminent threats of violence (see Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969)).
To be sure, sometimes it may make sense for a Representative to report to the police things that she knows aren't crimes, but might be useful to know for the future (e.g., "This weird guy from my district has been sending me strange e-mails; nothing to do about it now, but if the mailroom gets any packages from him, they might be worth an extra check"). But that doesn't sound like what Rep. Greene's tweet is referring to.

These frivolous investigations are lawyer rent seeking. The agencies should be forced to pay all costs from personal assets of the decision maker, not with tax funds.
MGT, Kimmel and the Capitol police are not lawyers, Raymond.
An ordinary person sees Kimmel made a funny joke. The investigations of jokes is frivolous. It should not be paid for by the taxpayer, nor by any party. The rent seeking members of the agency need to be made to pay.
" The investigations of jokes is frivolous. It should not be paid for by the taxpayer, nor by any party."
I disagree. There's clearly a party who should pay for this.
''
President Trump triggered a counter intel investigation by the FBI for joking that Russia could find Hillary's emails. The Democrats impeached him for the joke.
"That's the gift that keeps on giving, Clark.“
"That it is, Eddie."
Rent seeking should be criminalized, as armed robbery is. They are exactly the same.
Death to the landlords!
Jimmy Kimmel is the tolerant progressive who jokes about a man hitting a woman.
He's a comedian and entertainer. Not sure how much of a leftist icon the co-host of the Man Show is supposed to be...
"He's a comedian"
Claim made sans evidence.
"Not sure how much of a leftist icon the co-host of the Man Show is supposed to be..."
For what it's worth, he was the unfunny one on THAT show too.
But, yes, Kimmel totally not a Leftist. Sure.
Your opinion is continuously 180 degrees off. Kimmel first came to notice as the announcer on "Win Ben Stein's money" as the funny half of the team, often at Mr. Stein's expense. I'm sure Conservatives have been resenting him for that all this time.
I watched Ben Stein's money. He was not funny then.
LOL, no one's buying your pear-clutching act, you tool.
The fact that it is likely not a crime does not change the fact that it is in inexorable bad taste.
For which there are two standards in our culture. If Joe Rogan had said the same thing about Nancy Pelosi, we would be hearing no end of it, and if stated on Twitter, would be banned from Twitter.
Sorry it makes you uncomfortable to point out double standards. Too bad.
I mean, I can't really police what offends you, but this struck me as really normal late-night fare.
As to your Joe Rogan counterfactual, as usual that's you trying to turn your internal beliefs into external evidence. Says a lot about you, not a lot about any real-life double standard.
As usual not for you, but for counterfactuals.
Kimmel is one of those who Trump broke. There’s a lot of that out there - people who pre-Trump were just ordinary whatevers (an ok late night host in Kimmel’s case) but Trump through his awfulness changed them. Since Trump, Kimmel has become so nakedly political that I can’t stand to watch him, although he’s still tons better than Colbert.
All that said, MTG is an embarrassment to everything. She’s probably the worst among the “say whatever it takes to keep attempting on myself no matter how stupid it is” politicians. Or perhaps she’s got an iq below 75. Either way she’s truly awful. Making a big deal out of a marginally funny joke and whining about a non-existent threat is right in her sweet spot. She’s the AOC of the right, except perhaps somehow a little worse.
MTG is way more performative than AOC. Most of AOC's media exposure has been brought to her from her critics. Liberal as she is, she is trying to do her job. And looks like a moderate politician & a genius next to everyone's favorite congress critter from Georgia.
AOC is just like Trump. Only about 5% as intelligent as they think they are, can dish out insults but are incredibly sensitive to getting them back, and they always have to make it about them.
Seriously, in terms of personality she’s Trump’s doppelgänger.
This is silly. Trump is cunning in terms of self-promotion, but is otherwise completely ignorant and uninformed about everything, and has the reasoning skills of a squirrel on crystal meth. AOC isn't a genius, but she seems reasonably intelligent.
I don't follow Kimmel. I'm a Seth Meyers guy.
Meyers is to Trump what David Duke is to Jews. Both are hate mongering, angry, unfunny guys, lecturing the audience, never making them laugh.
Yet somehow you watch. Do you find hate mongering, angry, unfunny guys entertaining?
"but this struck me as really normal late-night fare."
It is, but that doesn't challenge the point, because one of the ways in which it's normal is that the target is a Republican.
This is a completely new goalpost. Now you're just saying late night comics have a partisan slant.
Which is even weaker then Bored Lawyer's 'this is in bad taste' about a joke about slapping a congresswoman.
Colbert and Kimmel obviously have a partisan slant. No big deal, as entertainers there’s no expectation otherwise.
That’s why I don’t watch them (and if their slant was the other direction my slant would be the same). I really don’t watch late night at all, but my wife likes to watch as she’s drifting off to sleep. Fortunately, she prefers Fallon, which is tolerable because for the most part he stays away from politics.
Hard to understanding how guys like that don’t understand that they’re alienating half the potential audience by being so hard core.
"It is, but that doesn't challenge the point, because one of the ways in which it's normal is that the target is a Republican."
The target is a loon, it's just coincidence that the only people voting loons into Congress is Republicans.
AOC is a loon. So is Bernie Sanders.
They're socialists. I don't like their politics. But they are not loons.
This woman is a caricature. She is an embarrassment to her party, a black eye to her office, and a burden to anybody who shares the handful of legitimate views she votes/advocates for.
And voted in by her constituents.
Well, that surely makes her less of a an embarrassment to her party, a black eye to her office, and a burden!
Her constituents are the uneducated, drawling, bigoted, Deep South yokels of Can’t Keep Up, Georgia.
Carry on, clingers. So far as we permit, and that’s it. As usual.
'Cuz when your betters get tired of permitting you to carry on, just watch that jackboot come stamping on your face--forever.
Not really. Better Americans have been enforcing their preferences, and the culture war casualties have been complying with them, for so long as any of us has been alive. Plenty of national progress during that period. Jackbooting . . . not so much.
The betters even permit the clingers to whimper and complain about it as much as they like. No one likes listening to the bigoted whining, but no one stops the losers from muttering and sputtering.
"And voted in by her constituents."
so they get what they deserve.
Residents of rural Georgia already have what they deserve --declining communities wrecked by economic inadequacy, downscale education, addiction, superstition, and old-timey bigotry. All of the smart, ambitious young people depart at high school graduation, never to return. The depleted human residue that remains after generations on the wrong side of bright flight -- a concentrating pool of ignorance, intolerance, and gullibility -- is what elects people like Marjorie Taylor Greene.
That's a weird way to talk about aunt Jimmy.
Greene is a mainstream Republican and is widely supported by the party. The Republicans have gotten that bad. And she is less extreme then many commentators on this blog.
MTG has an approval rating of just 24% among Republicans, with a net approval of just +4.
The 'generic' Republican congressman has an approval rating of over 50% among Republicans, with a net of over +40.
A quick sample of other specific Republicans in Congress showed mostly approval ratings of 60% or more among Republicans, with even widely criticized leaders like McConnell and McCarthy getting 50% or more.
For comparison, noted anti-Semite racist bigot Linda Sarsour polls at almost 50% among Democrats, with a net of +32.
So...
No, MTG is not mainstream Republican, and does not have widespread or significant support even among Republican voters, much less the Republican leadership.
"And voted in by her constituents."
The same conspiracy that kept Trump from winning in Georgia saddled Republicans with Klan Mom. There's no other possible explanation!
That’s just wishful thinking. Empty G is one of GOP’s top fundraisers, if not the top. She raised more in small donations than her top opponent has raised total. Cook isn’t even bothering with her race. She’s invited to speak everywhere a gaggle of “conservatives” are flocking.
Empty G has zero legislative accomplishments. She sits on no committees. She’s done nothing for her district. And she will surely be re-elected. Because post-policy Republican politics requires nothing of their representatives than to run around pwning libz and making public spectacles of themselves.
Not only is Empty G “mainstream,” she *is* the GOP mainstream.
Which is a fine reason to criticize her, and by extension her party. Not a fine reason to joke about committing violence against her.
AOC is also a joke and an embarassment on many levels. Yet I have never heard anyone suggest violence against her. Derision and laughter, yes.
Really?

"prompting condemnation and calls for his Twitter and Instagram accounts to be suspended"
Let me know when someone calls for Jimmy Kimmel's accounts to be suspended.
Where ya going with those goalposts?
No, that's Bored Lawyer's original goal post, up the thread: "For which there are two standards in our culture. If Joe Rogan had said the same thing about Nancy Pelosi, we would be hearing no end of it, and if stated on Twitter, would be banned from Twitter."
Do you even know now new goalposts work?
BL: I have never heard anyone suggest violence against [AOC].
MollyGodiva: Here are some examples
BL: Well, Kimmel is not going to suffer repercussions.
You see how he had one thesis, and when that was handily contradicted, pretended the thesis was completely different?
"No, that's Bored Lawyer's original goal post, up the thread: "For which there are two standards in our culture. If Joe Rogan had said the same thing about Nancy Pelosi, we would be hearing no end of it, and if stated on Twitter, would be banned from Twitter.""
This thing I imagine happening is proof of what I said.
MTG is far better Congressperson than anybody in the Progressive Caucus. And the Speaker, to boot.
You’re a delusional twit to even think that, let alone say it.
It's not even a debate. She's done more good than the Prog Caucus by a massive margin. And I can not think of anybody who has been worse than Pelosi.
Whining to the Capitol Police about what a guy said in a TV studio in California is "doing good"???
Of her many accomplishments, give us the top 3.
Forced Congress to record actual votes on legislation.
Recognized the insult to kangaroo courts the 1/6 Commission, as expected, devolved into.
She utterly pisses off the right people to piss off.
Yeah, leftists do similar things all the time. It’s a whole tactic: claiming words are violence and those words make special people unsafe on campus.
Yup, it's just rule 4 :
"Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules."
Since the lefties would automatically seek to cancel (and probably succeed in cancelling) any rightie who made a joke about violence against a leftie opponent, pretending that it was serious, or that it coud be taken seriously by a nutjob, or that it revealed an inner hatred bordering on a will-to-violence, even the batty MTG can see that rule 4 applies here.
Invite the usual suspects to condemn the joke, listen to the crickets, and save the example for next time the shoe is on the other foot.
The irony certainly lost on the poster here is incredible.
The last time I saw a message from Greene, it was a campaign ad in which she used a Barrett .50 rifle to make a car explode. Kimmel's joke is no more of a true threat than was that ad.
Full disclosure: I support Greene, and liked the ad. But she needs to be able to take it as well as dish it out.
"Full disclosure: I support Greene..."
Good god, man. That's not something a reasonable person admits, let alone in public.
You've chosen poorly, by the standards of either party.
What do you suggest on preparation for defense against the Jew space lasers, jdgalt1?
The Volokh Conspiracy and its fans want to know.
"Since the lefties would automatically seek to cancel (and probably succeed in cancelling) any rightie who made a joke about violence against a leftie opponent,"
Remember that time the leftists tried to cancel John Lennon for joking that the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus"?
Maybe there's a difference between words that target entire groups of people and those aimed at individuals? Like a difference between saying 'Mexicans are drug dealers' and 'Mateo is a drug dealer?'
The usual deflection from your own side's bad behavior by wildly gesturing at 'liberals bad.'
You suck, dude.
Did anybody ever come up with a shred of hard evidence to support the claims that Rep. John Lewis was called racial slurs during Tea Party protests?
Does Rep. Hank Johnson still worry about Guam flipping over?
It's the usual detection from leftists being objectively worse.
"Does Rep. Hank Johnson still worry about Guam flipping over?"
From Jewish space lasers maybe?
I assume she said ‘Jew space lasers.’ She is rural Georgia-level literate. And bigoted.
That wasn't the reason he gave.
More distractions.
It’s all you got. Anything but addressing what the OP is about.
Wanting a single standard instead of double standards is not a distraction.
And a distraction from what? Some politician did something weird? Why would anyone need to distract from that? Politicians do goofy stuff sometimes. They also say unsupportable things some times. So what? There are enough politicians doing and saying enough things so anyone can always find something to complain about. Distraction is irrelevant.
I don’t see anyone claiming to be Greene's biggest fan here.
You don’t need to post.
But when your response whenever your side does something bad is to try and switch to whatever thing on the left has you mad today, it’s not hard to see why the right continues to spiral.
The left is absolutely fighting with itself to figure what it is. Meanwhile, the right has decided it doesn’t care what it is because the left is too bad to self-police.
That’s quite the narrative.
Maybe the left will decide that being excessively, horrendously bad isn’t worth the pushback. I don’t think so though. I think being excessively, horrendously bad and doubling down on it every time has become their identity. They’ll just claim the pushback isn’t fair and everything they do to everyone is justified by [made up story here], like always.
Just for a moment don't react to your side behaving badly by pointing to the other side.
Be something akin to an adult. Just once.
When that wouldn’t cede an opportunity for more Dem/leftist attacks, then maybe.
A double standard that starts with the word "if" is not a double standard.
"If someone on my side said something like that, then X would happen to them."
I was acknowledging that Greene can sometimes be about as bad as some campus leftists. It’s not even close to a deflection.
Maybe we can all agree that words aren’t violence and they don’t affect safety in any actionable way and that campus leftists and Greene should stop pretending they do. And that these people are all acting ridiculously. Want to agree on that? Why not?
Maybe you can keep trying to change the subject.
I do think people who say words are violence are being dumb. But the circling wagons here is pretty evident and sad.
No wagons circled. Let’s have a single standard and not a double standard.
The left's attitude toward Greene mirrors the right's attitude toward AOC. Both sides are being petty and looking for excuses to create trouble. And they’re artificially inflating the status of lightweights in the process.
Bothsidesing is yet another weak distraction.
If you don't want to talk about the OP, then just don't post.
You're just showing how reflexively you'll jump in and waive fallacies about to defend your side, regardless of what they've done.
Your absolute determination that no complaint about the right EVER be put in context is one of your more absurd obsessions.
Kimmel's response: "Officer I would like to report a joke."
He also reported Klan Barbie to Batman.
And some people thought no one could top Clinger Barbie (Palin).
“Clinger Barbie”
Why do progressives hate women?
I always enjoy it when what used to be called 'dittoheads' try this pathetic political judo. They don't really understand what the underlying principle is and yet try to 'flip' their 'opponents.' It's like something from a Mel Brooks comedy.
Except Mel Brooks is actually funny.
And he knew his Jew space lasers!
https://youtube.com/watch?v=0Wai7VFzycI
'Clinger Barbie'
Why do progressives hate women?"
Why would you assume that being compared to Barbie indicates hatred? After all, she's been a doctor, a veterinarian, and even an astronaut (but never elected to Congress)
You're just gaslighting now.
Words are violence after all - - - - - - - -
But of course Greene's line is a joke. Can't anyone take a joke?
The Hill reports:
"In a fiery back and forth, Greene then responded to his tweet and said, “You weren’t joking. You hide your misogyny and your racism behind your ‘jokes’ on ABC. This was a dog whistle to the violent left to assault me or worse, and your already inspiring fantasies of violence against me. How many new death threats will I get that are your fans?” "
You regard that as Klan Barbie being jocular, Roger S?
Well, if had a blow out party in my back yard..MTG anytime over butter face AOC and her lecturing..after tossing back a few shots kind of obvious who would be more entertaining
It's interesting to see what partisanship can warp, in this case normal male desires. Politics equal, AOC is far hotter than MTG. In any bar, politics unknown, witnessing both, most hetero males would agree.
It's just some friends of mine that say,
"Hey, what's the matter man?
We're gonna come around at twelve
With some Puerto Rican girls that are just dyin' to meet you.
We're gonna bring a case of wine
Hey, let's go mess and fool around
You know, like we used to"
you can't get no... satisfaction. no, no, no!
Marjorie Taylor Greene looks like a Michael Myers mask got busy with a Neanderthal.
I wouldn't really argue with that, (Though my wife is far hotter than either.) and I'd admit Tulsi Gabbard isn't that bad looking, either. I just think AOC is a bit of an airhead aside from being ideologically nuts. Gabbard, otoh, isn't nuts, just wrong.
Greene does disagree with Kimmel going on TV and making suggestions that someone violently strike her. But we do not know what police reports she might have filed.
It's true, we just have her word which I agree with you is not very solid.
Wrapped in a bad faith complaint to the police?
Did you even read the headline?
The headline is wrong. Greene has not filed a police report over this.
well, she says so herself on her Twitter.
And nothing false sarcastic ever happens on Twitter...
"this threat of violence has been filed with the capital police" is literally what she said on social media
It was a joke.
"It was a joke."
Do you have any evidence? Reasoning adults do not rely on unsupported assertions from disaffected wingnuts.
Roger S also thinks that Russia hasn't invaded Ukraine, so he might not be the best judge of what headlines are correct.
Invasion? Not an invasion. It's a special military operation. A perfect special military operation.
Kimmel has been threatening comedy for years...he isn't funny. Adam was the funny one on their show...old Jimmy has no comedic ability. Based on that..is this a threat? In 2022 maybe?
Right, Kimmel has not been funny for many years.
I'm betting it was around the time he clashed with your politics that he became not funny...Partisanship warps so much...
He was not funny on Ben Stein's money. He was not funny on Man Show. Maybe you found his blackface Karl Malone impression hilarious, but I thought it was retarded back in the day.
Here's Jimmy Kimmel doing Blackface. Hilarious!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wse5lgIDxM
Kimmel has never been funny, not even once on accident.
Kmmel's kind of a wimpy guy, so you wouldn't take his comment as a "true threat", but now if Will Smith said it . . . .
Uh, you might want to re-read/watch Kimmel's joke...
In the end, it is a joke, using Dem standards against them. Much of the free speech suppression they utilize is predicated on the theory that language can be violence. There shouldn’t be a 1st Amdt exception for speech that doesn’t arise to the level of imminent danger of physical harm (EV - you’re the expert here - fill in the actual standard, which is really irrelevant to my point). But there are such exceptions, more and more, I reality.
One good example here is/was the 1/6/21 protests. The Democrats are using their purported fear of violence that day to justify their witch hunt committee investigation. Taylor Greene’s claims of fear of violence are significantly more credible than those of Pelosi and company that day, well protected by armed security, and in a completely different part of the Capital. Amazingly, no real weapons were ever found on the protesters, and the thousands of hours of video, mostly showing a very peaceful crowd, allowed into the Capital by the Capital Police, remains under lock and key at the orders presumably of the Speaker. There was little, if any actual violence that day on the part of the protesters, yet many of them remain locked in jail without the possibility of bail, in deplorable conditions, better than a year later.
Her point, I think, is that what is good for the goose, is good for the gander. If the left, the Democrats, can ban speech because they fear possible violence from it, then she should be able to do so too.
"Taylor Greene’s claims of fear of violence are significantly more credible than those of Pelosi and company that day"
How partisanship makes one ridiculous.
Do you ever tire of having to argue lunacy by you side is actually a joke?
Y’all had to do that for years on behalf of Trump, only to have him double down and make fools out of you over and over.
I think people are watching you minimize their concerns and trying to emulate.
Jimmy Kimmel has you concerned?
No. He’s just another celebrity douchebag who likes to put down half the country for spiteful applause.
So what concerns are you talking about?
Anyone complaining about Greene.
" likes to put down half the country for spiteful applause "
Don't flatter yourselves, clingers. You haven't been half of the country for a long time. And the demographic trends -- less rural, less religious, less White, less bigoted, less backward -- indicate the minority status of backwater right-wingers (and the progressive trend of the cultural war) are extremely unlike to change.
You are welcome to (1) whine about it as much as you like, (2) pray on it a spell, and (3) cling to your guns and superstition for solace, though, as you await replacement.
Do you ever get tired of lying, or have you simply reached the point where your reputation can't suffer any further, so you just don't care?
Bruce Hayden: Amazingly, no real weapons were ever found on the protesters, and the thousands of hours of video, mostly showing a very peaceful crowd, allowed into the Capital by the Capital Police, remains under lock and key at the orders presumably of the Speaker. There was little, if any actual violence that day on the part of the protesters, yet many of them remain locked in jail without the possibility of bail, in deplorable conditions, better than a year later.
You mean no other weapons other than countless truncheons, hammers, hockey sticks, bear spray, tasers, and hurled projectiles, and at least one admitted-to pistol? Plus an armory of firearms and ammunition cached for ready access minutes away in Virgina.
One NYT-published still photograph of a hockey stick being wielded showed either a screw driver or a chisel taped to the handle, about a foot below the blade, with the axis of the tool aligned with the axis of the hockey blade. It took a high resolution, enlarged frame to see that online. The picture encompassed at least dozens of rioters; it took careful study to find the taped-on tool. I have not heard mention from anyone about that deadly modification, which may have gone unnoticed. Live-motion footage showed that hockey stick swung full force, again and again, at cops trying to guard a capitol entrance, with the end of the hockey blade directed toward their helmets. In the motion footage you could not see the modification.
There was not one person who breached police lines, and then entered through those tear-gas saturated portals (let alone through smashed windows) who could reasonably claim to think it was a peaceful protest. Had the same conduct occurred at the White House, every one of the rioters would have been shot dead. The only complaint you would hear from anyone would be whether too many died because the Secret Service did not shoot soon enough.
I try to stay polite. I cannot stay patient. Stop lying about what happened. Or, to give you benefit of the doubt, stop abusing your own opinions by excluding mainstream sources of information.
"You mean no other weapons other than countless truncheons, hammers, hockey sticks, bear spray, tasers, and hurled projectiles, and at least one admitted-to pistol?"
Countless?
I am glad that all of the video the government will not release did not reflect this. Because I bet that video shows exactly what you're saying and that is why the Dems won't release it.
The facts regarding weapons on January 6th have been proven both by video and court filings.
You’re a fucking liar.
Yet...they haven't. Weird.
I do fuck. Thanks for noticing. Your wife certainly did.
As far as a liar, I might have to go along with your infinitely superior knowledge of the topic.
Have you read the charging documents, or considered the pile of guilty pleas, you bigoted, worthless, right-wing stain on America?
I will celebrate your replacement.
Again, countless.
"One NYT-published still photograph of a hockey stick being wielded showed either a screw driver or a chisel taped to the handle, about a foot below the blade, with the axis of the tool aligned with the axis of the hockey blade."
One. You counted, well, one.
Truly horrifying.
Now, let's do ANY BLM riots. Any of them.
Makes the utility of having an FBI, given that these "heavily armed insurrectionists" walked RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR HQ, a tad sketchy.
The restraint exhibited by law enforcement was just about the only thing the insurrectionists had going for them on Jan. 6, you worthless clinger. Would you have preferred that the authorities treated every one of those un-American losers the way that officer handled Ashli Babbitt?
A case could be made for restraint. A case also could have been made for using severe force on the belligerent insurrectionists.
There are no words in that paragraph that are true.
The paragraph was almost exclusively accurate.
“No real weapons were ever found”
Mr. Guy Refitt would like a word.
Let's remember that Greene has openly advocated executing her political opponents.
I think that the Secret Service is obligated to follow up on the report whether they agree or not.
I don't think this is much different that SWATing someone. Abuse of authority.
or capitol police, or whomever she filed the report with.
I do not like the disdain that Greene has received from some on the left. She is a woman of average intelligence who is perhaps a little too susceptible to conspiracy theories and the like. That makes her unremarkable and average and should not be a source of such scorn. We see plenty of what I would call “weird thinking” from politicians on the left too.
That said, the claim that a joke is actually a threat is itself a joke. And I don’t care if some people on the left do it too. Principles, standards, and consistency are pragmatically optimal.
" She is a woman of average intelligence "
In hayseed-strewn sections of Georgia, perhaps . . .
which is also where a town pump can be celebrated by Republicans as a warrior for Jesus and family values.
In most of America, however, QAnon-level brains are below average.
No. She has the IQ of a root vegetable. Remember
the Nazi gazpacho police?
Her resume -- inherited a business, was a fitness coach as an adult, rampant illiteracy, antisocial behavior, never left the can't-keep-up backwaters -- indicates below-average intelligence.
Welker, the response to, "weird thinking," politicians cannot be to withhold disdain. Given that voting doesn't much work anymore, disdain is pretty much the only political power left to the American people. Thus, it is a power which must be used liberally, and against weird thinking liberals along with the others.
This is small beer. Far graver is that MTG is more Putinist than anyone in Congress other than Thomas Massie.
Explain Thomas Massie's "Putinism", please. I anxiously await the examples of the most libertarian person in Congress being "Putinist", whatever the hell that means.
damikesc, I agree that Massie's record shows he is only moderately Putinist. Other than support for Sadat, there is not a lot to link him to either Russian tyranny generally, or to nerve gas attacks on civilians specifically. I suspect Massie may even oppose nerve gas attacks.
His salient political tendency seems to be pro-Covid activism. It may indeed be fair to attribute that to personal ideology, idiosyncratically akin to libertarianism, practiced heedlessly. He does seem to be a standout among the congressional, "weird thinking," caucus. Given the present state of the House, that counts as an imposing credential.
As someone more to the left of the political spectrum—and always keen for political entertainment—I plan at appropriate times, when among friends, to drink toasts to his continuation in office.
"damikesc, I agree that Massie's record shows he is only moderately Putinist. Other than support for Sadat, there is not a lot to link him to either Russian tyranny generally, or to nerve gas attacks on civilians specifically. I suspect Massie may even oppose nerve gas attacks."
So, you're full of shit. An awful lot of words for a simple comment.

How about we get some reporting on the rash of fake hate crimes lately instead of non-news stories like this....
PLEASE TALK ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE HEADLINE! I CANNOT TAKE CRITICISM OF ANYONE ON MY SIDE!
It's like that old anti-drug commercial: "Who taught you to do things like this?" "I learned it from you, okay? I learned it from you!"
But you only want to focus on how bad the leather behavior is.
MTG has invented something new—meta-whataboutism. Lacking the right subject change ready-made, MTG turned herself into what she wanted, then demanded that everyone change the subject to her.
And look at these comments. It worked!
Right on the money. MTG wants attention and will do anything to get it. And far too many give her just what she wants.
People should remember than hate is not the opposite of love. In difference is the opposite of love (or in this case like).
Whataboutism (n):
A defense to the charge of hypocrisy.
Kevin P, nope. It's a subject change, not a defense.
I use, "whataboutism," only because it became customary. But it is fairly obviously mistaken coinage. The, "ism," on the end implies an ideology or a kind of organization, such as capitalism, or industrialism.
That is not what goes on. What goes on is a rhetorical practice, a common ploy to evade arguments by use of a subject change. For that, a more appropriate descriptor would be, "whataboutery." That would better connect rhetorically to terms such as, "frivolity," or, "mendacity." I suggested that change quite a while ago, but it recruited no followers. So I follow the crowd.
A more appropriate descriptor would be, "context".
The left frequently want to use attacks on others that would be as applicable to themselves if a free discussion were permitted. But if that were allowed, they wouldn't gain anything in a relative sense from the attack, so it can't be.
Sometimes their shield against reciprocal attacks is to redefine terms such that they can only apply to the left's enemies. "Racism", for instance, becomes about unfalsifiably asserted "power relationships", not ascribing guilt or inferiority to individuals on the basis of immutable characteristics. So the left's own racism can't be 'racism', as redefined.
At other times the left, laughably, just asserts that they're entitled to prohibit any mention of their own wrongs, and pretends this is somehow a fallacy. That would be "whataboutism".
It's always about the left's long standing effort to win arguments before they start by manipulating what people are allowed to/able to say. As noted by Orwell, decades ago.
MTG led the charge to force Congresspeople to actually pass recorded votes on all legislation.
That alone makes her more useful than about 97% of that body.
So does that logic hold for the Volokh comment section? That is, can I say here that it is my opinion that Politician X would be better off dead of a gunshot to the skull, or that Woman Y deserves to be gang raped?
Just sayin.'
The Volokh Conspiracy's record indicates that the likelihood of censorship is controlled by whether you are a movement conservative.
(If I have misjudged the record, I hope Prof. Volokh will correct it.)
No corrections?
Just sayin? You're equating a slap to being gang raped.
Presumably, she's also put the local constabulary on alert that "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" reruns are airing, and Mr. Smith has been threatening to climb out of the TV to carry out Kimmel's bidding.
I mean, it's not like people are freaking out about a tweet with Clarence Thomas and Herschel Walker at a meeting where Walker was getting an award from an organization that Thomas is an (Honorary) Board Member and seeking to report that to ethics committees and election boards and senate oversight committees ...
Goose, Gander, Pull!
Jokes resulting in calls for investigation reminds me of when Trump obviously joked about Russians getting Hillary's emails long after the FBI took possession of the server.
The FBI never took possession of the server.
