He was offended by the racism and anti Semitism of McReynolds. Which just goes to show, everything is relative.
Can it truly be said that the Chief Justice took the oath, if taking the oath is what made him the Chief Justice? Wouldn't it be more correct to say "William Howard Taft took the oath and became Chief Justice"?
All you nitpickers should be high school English teachers. Your talents are wasted on any substantive discussion.

This has been a problem for me. I am chatting up some nice lady on a train. I am sitting with a bank officer about a banking question. I am going to a party at a neighbor's house. People say, it's great that you are a lawyer. I turn red, and have to excuse myself. I feel so ashamed, so dirty. Your filthy, toxic occupation has invaded my brain and my speech.

I am especially enjoying the ongoing tutorial on 'championing free speech from a Cruz-class libertarian perspective during the Reign of the All-Powerful Tweets.'
(When the Federalist-Heritage-Republican-Bradley-Olin-Family-National Policy marching orders are issued, there apparently is no opportunity to flinch among movement conservative soldiers, no matter how ridiculous the contortions required for compliance or the degree to which credibility must be abandoned.)
