That is a strange beard. Looks like advanced mildew.

He actually lived to age 71...
But how can you omit Ex parte Milligan, which I believe he wrote.
He was going to be one of the Supreme Court members on the Electoral Commission to decide the Hayes/Tilden dispute. Then the Illinois legislature made him a Senator, and he quit the Court for the Senate. Historians say that of all the commissioners, he might have supplied a swing vote for Tilden, overcoming his Republican background. But Davis' resignation paved the way for Bradley, also a Republican but more partisan, hence part of the Republican majority which gave the Presidency to Hayes.
The Senate elected him President Pro Tempore after Garfield's assassination, so he could take over the Presidency if Chester Arthur croaked.
