Today in Supreme Court History: July 30, 1956
7/30/1956: Congress enacted a resolution, declaring that the motto of the United States is "In God we Trust." The Supreme Court declined to grant review in Newdow v.Congress, which considered the constitutionality of that motto.

In many of the courtrooms where I practice, the motto appears way up high on the wall behind the judge. I always wanted to steal the first "T" in "Trust". In one courtroom this had been done, or probably it just fell off. The judge never had it replaced.
As someone who thinks religion is THE dumbest thing that humans ever invented, this motto and whatever controversy it generates ranks waaaay down in the list of things that irk me.
The word Fuchsia irks me more than the motto.
It will eventually be removed.
