Infectious diseases, specifically pneumonia, influenza, and tuberculosis, amounting to a death rate of about 400 per 100,000—with today's population, that would be about 1.3 million deaths a year. (The number might be somewhat lower to the extent some of the pneumonia was noninfectious in origin.) The number of pneumonia and influenza deaths in the U.S. last year was 55,000.

It is truly sad that our media fail to place the Coronavirus into perspective including the flu stats that you have provided as well as the stats and actions of the US government during the H1N1 pandemic. Instead the media seems to prefer preaching doom & gloom while causing more panic instead of using facts, reason, & critical thinking to reduce the stress on people.

Flame, that is probably because the media is largely divorced from facts, reason, and critical thinking.
That may be an overly harsh assessment, but given the performance of the media - especially the last few years - it is entirely deserved. There was an article quoting a NYT reporter lamenting the lack of credibility the public has for major media. The media blames Trump. But, it is the media that has abandoned it's factual reporting in favor of partisan propaganda.

He/she should take that up with the member of the NYT's Editorial Board who declared on MSNBC (w/Brian "I was at The Little Bighorn w/Custer" Williams) that it is in fact true that $500 million / 327 million Americans = $1 million for every American (who, funny enough, was referring to a claim tweeted by...a journalist).
