My father's story of finding the American dream
The Boston University American Dream project has posted an interview with my father, Yefim Somin, about his experience of emigrating from the Soviet Union to the United States, back in 1979. A video and written interview are both available here. This is part of a series of interviews with Boston-area immigrants from a wide range of different countries.
I wrote my own account if the immigration experience in this essay solicited by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society a few years ago. My father's story (and a shorter version of my own) are also reprinted in a 2012 book compiled by HIAS, which includes memoirs by a large number of Russian Jewish immigrants who arrived between the 1970s and the present.
