'Now Is Better,' Says Legendary Designer Stefan Sagmeister
His bold new exhibition draws on the work of Steven Pinker, Our World in Data, and Human Progress to document how much life has improved since the good old days.
HD DownloadIs the world getting better? Or is it on the verge of collapse?
Stefan Sagmeister emphatically believes that things are looking up, and his art exhibition "Now Is Better" showcases a bold new way to convince the world that he's right. He takes actual paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, disassembles them, and creates new works by juxtaposing them with data visualizations of just how much things have improved since the good old days.Β
Some works chart the incredible decline in deaths on the battlefield, from famine, and from natural disasters while others map how much cheaper food and lighting have become in real terms. One piece documents the explosion in the number of guitars per person on the planetβan indicator of growth in leisure and entertainmentβwhile another charts the persistent belief that crime is always rising despite its well-documented decline.Β Β
A heralded graphic designer who has designed album covers for Jay-Z, The Rolling Stones, and Lou Reed, Sagmeister has won two Grammy Awards, including one for his design of the Talking Heads' boxed set Once in a Lifetime. Born in Austria in 1962, he's called New York City home since the 1990s. He draws on sources such as Our World in Data, Human Progress, and the work of Steven Pinker, who has written the foreword to a book version of the "Now Is Better" series coming out later this year.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Sagmeister tells me why it's so important to acknowledge and defend material progress, why art and commerce aren't enemies, and what he loves about the New World he's adopted as his homeland and how that ties into the "Now Is Better" project.

Sagmeister is going to get sanctioned for disinformation and heresy. Now is definitely worse, both morally and technically. Never has so much racism and oppression produced so much planet-killing first world extravagances (at least for regular people).
Our betters have explained how important it is for us to return to the wise ways of the pre-industrial past. Things will only be right when we all live near-subsistence lifestyles, caring for our vegetable plots outside our artisan i.e. shitty huts, watching our children die from dysentery, and never traveling more than 30 miles from our birth place. And attending endless DEI and New Green Deal political sessions, in lieu of entertainment.
Bravo! Since talking heads and mainstream news media donβt seem to have much impact on misinformation believed by the general public, communicators who can present the truth in ways that might get through to the public and offset the socialist and fascist propaganda machines are very welcome.
His ‘American Dirt’ ($14,000 but looks like a paint by the numbers for $4.95 in 1960’s money) has CO2 emissions per person going down 33% or by 7 tons by the end of Trump’s Presidency.
Murders go from 65 per 100K in 1500 to 2 per 100K in 2000 – so get lost gun control nuts.
‘Richer and Poorer ($16,000) claims 9% (down from 35% in 1990) is living in poverty so it really should be called ‘Seal the Borders – Now!’ This seems to be correlated to his ‘Bitter Pills’ ($16,000) that says while global poverty has decreased by 300%, CEO salary has increased from 21 times to 351 times the average worker salary.
He demonstrates the welfare state being created, i.e ‘social spending’ increased from 1% in 1920 (millions of legal immigrants but little welfare) to 20% in 2020 (millions of illegals and unlimited welfare) in the United States.
Clever and interesting presentation, but I didn’t see a painting worth more than $100. Would be a good gift to someone going off to college – like the ‘Dogs Playing Poker’ series.

I really like art and beautiful photos, I really like to do things with my own hands, for example, I decided to decorate the house for the New Year, I found a website and there is a snowflake background https://depositphotos.com/vectors/snowflake-background.html and I printed it out, then cut out snowflakes and will decorate the house with them, I think that everything will work out for me and it will be very beautiful.
