How the Epstein Files Became the Ultimate Conspiracy Theory
Michael Shermer examines the psychology behind pattern seeking, the limits of suspicion, and how the Epstein files fuel conspiracy thinking.
Today's guest is Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine and author of the new book Truth: What It Is, How to Find It, and Why It Still Matters.
Shermer explains how the release of the Epstein files has fueled conspiracy thinking, particularly through guilt by association and pattern seeking. He explains why ambiguous evidence invites overinterpretation, how skepticism differs from cynicism, and why the demand for total certainty often leads people away from truth rather than toward it.
The conversation also explores the broader collapse of trust in institutions after COVID-19, the role of influencers in amplifying conspiratorial narratives, and why scientific and historical denialism have found new audiences online.
The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie goes deep with the artists, entrepreneurs, and scholars who are making the world a more libertarian—or at least a more interesting—place by championing free minds and free markets.

why scientific and historical denialism have found new audiences online.
Why don’t you ask Dr. “I am the science “ Fauci?
Aren't the Epstein files just a distraction from tariffs?
Epstein's sex traffic enterprise was very much a conspiracy, and 3 million documents makes it much more than a "theory".
While I want to all those involved in pedophilia to be ran through a woodchipper feet-first, the 3M documents are not all pedos. In fact, many of the E-files exonerated people. Specifically, Donald J Trump. The same cannot be said for many of your liberal heroes.
Now that they can't use insinuations about the Epstein files against Trump every Leftist is coming out claiming Epstein was a good but misunderstood boy in order to limit the damage to them and their allies.
and how the Epstein files fuel conspiracy thinking.
Let me guess, Michael Shermer is in the files, too.
Oh, Skeptic Magazine... I remember them. I used to run in those circles-- New Atheists etc. Then this happened.
and why scientific and historical denialism have found new audiences online.
I'm assuming he starts with men becoming women and slavery.
26:45—Government intervention in transgender medical treatment for minors
Is listening to this going to make me shove my fist through my monitor? "Government intervention into transgender medical treatment... for minors".
First define 'transgender'. The term suggests that you can move from one sex to the other. You cannot. There is no technology, no medical procedure, no magical verbal incantation or prayer that can make that happen. It doesn't exist. So then if there's a 'medical treatment' for a state of affairs that does not exist in humanity, then what in the fucking fuck are we even talking about?
Just a reminder - "Transwomen" have shot more people in 2026 than ICE agents.
Constitutionally observing down the barrel of a gun.
Shermer: *in discussing the 'my truth' phenomenon* [...] the post modern lit-crit deconstructionism...
Gillespie: Which I love, this is kind of my jam.
Yeah, Nick, trust us, we know it's your jam, no matter how hard you deny that post modernists were and are nearly entirely Marxist.
Shermer leapfrogged the whole trans thing writ-large to focus on minors. Trust me, the minor issue is a fucking Nuremberg violation which should result in a whole bunch of people hanging by the neck from piano wires... but... minors, like their adult counterparts, cannot become the opposite sex.
And fuck you, Nick @26:45... leave kids alone, you fucking horrid little ghoul.
Reason is so skeptical of government power but not skeptical of the government actors.
Ass sex with stoned minors is the true litmus test, I guess.
