Bjorn Lomborg: How Our Climate Fixation Hurts the World's Poor
The 'skeptical environmentalist' offers 12 low-cost, proven policies that he says could save 4.2 million lives and generate $1.1 trillion in new wealth every year.

In 2001, Danish political scientist Bjorn Lomborg burst onto the international scene with his bestselling and controversial book The Skeptical Environmentalist. The onetime member of Greenpeace said that climate change is real and that human activity is clearly contributing to it, but he said the best science didn't support the apocalyptic visions put forth by people like Earth in the Balance author and former Vice President Al Gore.
Lomborg went on to create the Copenhagen Consensus, a think tank that applies cost-benefit analysis to problems facing the global poor and works with Nobel laureates, policymakers, philanthropists, and researchers to develop pragmatic, relatively low-cost solutions to issues such as tuberculosis, malaria, lack of education, and access to food.
His new book is called Best Things First and it presents what Lomborg says are "the 12 most efficient solutions for the world's poorest people." He argues that for about $35 billion a year—a little more than half of what the U.S. spends annually on humanitarian aid—these policies could save 4.2 million lives and generate an extra $1.1 trillion in value every year.
I caught up with Lomborg in New York City during the latest meeting of the United Nations General Assembly. We talked about Best Things First, his view of the current environmentalist movement, and why politicians and the media continue to fixate on the possibility of a future climate apocalypse rather than helping the global poor in the here and now.

Let’s get real? by what possible standard can the US demand that Africa (with 4% of our energy usage) give up a chance for a better life (indeed , for many a livable life !!) just because some fat bureaucrat doesn’t want more heat to ruin the paint job on his Rolls. It is wrong in 3 ways 1) you cannot coerce existing humans to live a horrible life so that already- better-off humans won’t have a dubious problem with heat. 2) So what if climate change is a problem?
3) Biden is now giving China and other huge polluters free pass.
What about this , largely attibutable to concessions by Biden and Obama : Amazon’s annual plastic packaging waste could circle the world 800 times, report alleges
It started in Africa with abortion and moved on to homosexuality, we should have stopped it cold when Obama was boing hissed and booed. Biden’s latest attempt to naturalize sodomy sure has failed,. Aren’t we up to 8 coups in Africa under his eyes.?
I see the terrorists and destroyers of tommorow in this headline : Ugandan students from 13 Universities protest Joe Biden’s sanction threats over the country’s new anti-gay law
Really ! University students coming together over the moral pronouncements of a President with a Guinness Book pervert son !!! amazing
Using climate change is a science that is used that can be related to by the majority of people. showing us the storms and destruction caused by a storm doesn't show where or when it has happened. I spotted footage taken from other storms to make it look worse than it was. then drought caused by diverting water to save the snail darter fish and ignoring the demands of farmers whose crops were failing because of the diverted water isn't expressed. Why? To get higher prices for food. the tragic fact is that the farmer doesn't get any higher prices. The media states that they have a multitude of scientists who have a consensus that people cause global warming. let's break that down. Scientists---( well which scientists) What are their credentials? none are ever presented. The word consensus sounds impressive, doesn't it? while it only says they all agree to whatever question was asked, also never given. The use of the word scientists is used extensively but no actual science data is ever presented. Their excuse is that it is very confusing and the average person couldn't understand. Well they are telling us we are stupid. I now ask you to solve a math problem. Take the value if BTU's and the length of time it takes to heat up one cubic foot of seawater one degree. divide it into the number of cubic feet of water on our planet( it is available on the net) you will find that mankind hasn't the ability to produce that much heat or the time we have been hear on earth to raise the temperature one degree. so just how are we responsible for global warming? So what is? the main factor is the sun and the phases it goes through. the tilt of the earth's axis becomes the earth's main source of heat. the other are earth's natural events. Volcanoes are number two with the ash put up into the atmosphere. third comes from space that thankfully are not frequent, but have sent Earth into an ice age when they are large enough. As for CO2 that man makes? it is what is the major part of earth's system for life to be sustained. We also hear about methane that comes from our manufacturing. Well they never tell us that most of our methane comes from natural sources like the decay that must take place for life to continue. termites create more than man does. My favorite are cow farts. we have so many cows that it creates an imbalance in our atmosphere. I ask what happened to all the methane created by the buffalo that inhabited the plains before the white man got here? what of all the wildlife on the plains of Africa? they number in the millions. dont their farts count? It seems that only the science that is allowed counts to man as the prime source of global warming. Why? so they can collect taxes and INVEST it where it is needed most. it seems that need is in the pockets of the rich. well My rant has gone on long enough.----- I, Grampa
Bjorn consistently aims at the wrong target. After Kerry, Biden, and Pelosi signaled that even organ harvesting, Uyghur persecution and state attacks on Falun Gong were trivial compared to climate, China has ACCELERATED the use of coal.
Just today I see
China's growing use of coal including the LONGEST coal transporting railway - which carries 200 MILLION tons of fossil fuel 1,141 MILES annually - draws pundit outrage as western nations spend BILLIONS to push citizens to reduce carbon footprint
Bjorn seems to consistently aim at the wrong target. After Kerry and Biden and Pelosi gave the signal that even organ harvesting and open persecution of Uyghurs and Falun Gong was not as important as climate, China has ACCELERATED the use of coal.
China's growing use of coal including the LONGEST coal transporting railway - which carries 200 MILLION tons of fossil fuel 1,141 MILES annually - draws pundit outrage as western nations spend BILLIONS to push citizens to reduce carbon footprint
I’m back because I could not resist.
New Headline for Bjorn, mabye he’ll reconsider what the real real problem is. It isn’t common good or human welfare or any such monstrous abstraction
The fast-growing energy source which will power the future: Yes, it’s coal India has almost doubled coal output in a year. China is building two power stations a week
So, Bjorn, how about we take a truith break and just point out that under Biden coal and emmissions and compliance are all on the bad side of the ledger. It isn't that there is a better way, it's that it is stupid to say any progress overall is being made. If fossil fuels and coal are the problem , they are a BIGGER problem under Biden. He is doing nothing that matters. NOTHING.
Something is not right about ole Bjorn. Never with the moral or religious or spiritual angles.
It is GODDAM wrong for outsiders to tell Africa no fossil fuels when it is that that will save lives , stop poverty and malnutrition and lack of education. No arguments ,that is something a reasonable person or godly person must oppose.
Maybe he isn't Bjorn-again,but something is wrong.
Finally take any timeline for death to the world by climate change and you will find it is all over NOW.
I see 2 things that eliminate any further argument CHINA China’s growing use of coal including the LONGEST coal transporting railway – which carries 200 MILLION tons of fossil fuel 1,141 MILES annually – draws pundit outrage as western nations spend BILLIONS to push citizens to reduce carbon footprint A Scottish journalist highlighted the incongruity between the green initiatives coming from Western countries and those coming from China China is responsible for 33 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas, but continues to power itself by coal and establish itself as a global superpower In the US, the Biden Administration continues to propose tens of billions of dollars be allocated to green initiatives that may or may not be effective
INDIA India plans to triple underground coal mining to meet energy demand
I knew it was all over when Biden and Kerry caved to organ harvesting by the Chinese to get a cllimate 'agreement' .It is worse than ever now for the Falun Gong, the Christians, and the Uyghurs. That is what Biden's demons have unleashed on the world.
