Nicholas Christakis: How To End the Covid Pandemic
Misinformation and bad policy can only be defeated by robust, open debate in the public square.

All respiratory pandemics follow a script, one that's as much social and political as it is medical or epidemiological, says Yale sociologist and medical doctor Nicholas Christakis, who has just released a new paperback edition of his authoritative book, Apollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live.
In his conversation with Nick Gillespie, Christakis pulls no punches when slamming the failures of our politicians and public health officials to act quickly and speak honestly about the COVID-19 pandemic which has left 750,000 Americans dead.
As a newly minted member of the advisory council for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) and a high-profile target of ultra-woke campus activists, Christakis talks about how COVID misinformation has also been spread by pundits and politicians who seem more interested in pushing ideology than science and why the best way forward—really, the only way forward—is through robust debate in the public square. He also argues that recent events on campuses—such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology canceling a talk by a scientist due to his critical views on affirmative action—underscore the need for a radical shift in favor of free speech at our colleges and universities.
Christakis previously appeared on The Reason Interview in April 2019, to discuss his book Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society and his viral showdown with students over Halloween costumes. Listen to it or watch it here.

Dead. From COVID. Like that suicide case was "gunshot to the head". Death certificate: Suicide by gunshot to the cranium.
Colin Powell, dead. Death Certificate: COVID-19.
Powell had multiple myloma you twit, which screws with your immune system. He was also in his mid 80s. Covid vaccines, like all virus vaccines, are a little over 90% effective, which is why we all benefit from more Americans doing their part and getting vaccinated and wearing a mask in close quarters with those you don't know.
I'm pretty damned certain DRP knows Powell had multiple myeloma. And that you missed the subtlety and sarcasm. And the point is such deaths are labeled as being due to COVID.
I'm vaccinated [X 3] because I made a decision to do so; based on my age and occupation, the benefit outweighed any likely risk [and I was one of the first to receive the vaccine in 2020].
I work with a young practitioner who is about 30 and wants to have children. She is no twit or ideologue, but she is much lower risk than I am. The decision is much different for her, and is rightfully her decision, not yours or any group or government.
As for masks, you are spreading misinformation. The cloth and paper procedure masks typically worn, and often incorrectly at that, provide minimal protection against the primary way COVID is spread, by aerosol. If you can smell someone's cigarette smoke through your mask, you are exposed.
Quo, good for you, now encourage others - including your practioner friend - to get the shot and mask up in close quarters. It is her decision of course, but it is the rest of societies to not want to interact with her in certain situations if she decides not to get a shot. Her decision affects us all, just as she has benefitted by the 80% of Americans who have been vaccinated.
As for "minimum protection", that's a characterization not from any recent studies. As to improper wearing of masks, maybe you and others on this site can spend your energy encouraging others to wear them properly instead of pretending they offer no protection.
HER choice, not YOURS; now try to stop operating in chicken little mode.
Seriously I don’t know why more people haven’t tried this, I work two shifts, 2 hours in the day and 2 in the evening…FWO And i get surly a check of $12600 what’s awesome is I m working from home so I get more time with my kids.
Try it, you won’t regret it........CASHAPP NOW
Wearing masks sucks. Stop talking about it as if it has no harm associated. People don't wear masks properly because wearing a mask properly all day is very uncomfortable. It is not "no big deal" for people who have to wear it for hours every day, for well over a year. It is unpleasant and has negative health consequences.

You seem to be trying to get people to infer that the Pfizer-payday jab subscription will
(a) confer immunity;
(b) reduce viral load if infected;
(c) prevent transmission.
If you think that they do any of (a)-(c), you're either ignorant of the facts - a docile, supine, gullible, lazy maroon - or you're a supporter of the Karenocracy.
Or both, perhaps - but not neither.
If Pfizer's claims about their data are to be believed (highly unlikely given their track record), the jabs reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death - not the risk of infection or transmission.
If anything, the spiked are a breeding ground for new variants, because they have a lower symptom profile for a given level of viral load.
If you have children, I hope they don't get Pfizer-payday-induced myocarditis - I don't believe in karma or schadenfreude, even when it's richly deserved.
Prove the shots r 90% effective? Can't stop u from getting it. Can't stop u from getting sick. Can't stop u from spreading it. Can't stop u from dying. Oh wait... That's right. If your one of the folks who test postive (with a test that can't test for u rested for) and r amongst the .07% who may die from it.... I guess on your grave stone u can have etched.. "It could've been worse". THAT'S..., what clowns like u actually believe. U r but another counted on..., scared as shit..., simpleton. A rather gross little human to your core. Harvest time has arrived.
The Phucko Knows
How to end the pandemic: Realize that it's not a pandemic anymore and this is an endemic virus that we just have to live with. And that it's not that hard to live with.
Humanity made tremendous progress while having to deal with things like smallpox and polio and diphtheria and all kinds of horrible stuff. We can handle a somewhat worse than usual respiratory virus without fucking up all of society. Or could have.
Unfortunately we have the Joe Friday brigade in charge. Faux wise, but genuinely malicious.
flip the fucking switch already.
Oh, no. We can't be like those right wing nut-jobs who are in charge in Norway and Denmark.
Ragnar & Hamlet, LLC
And just who is poor Yorick, dry bones.
You can't compare the success of Sweden, Norway and Denmark to the US. Get the vaccine, keep your mask on (double if possible), keep social distancing, and in that order. Because #2 and #3 are still important, even if you're vaccinated with the highly effective vaccine!
Get the highly effective vaccine and then wear a mask that is more effective at protecting you than the vaccine!
And 80% of the 2% of infected 1% are 99% less likely to get 4% of the resulting disease, and 41% less likely to be hospitalized 42.5% of the time out of a 1 in 100 chance! 72% of the time, it works 90% of the time!
You people don't understand the numbers! Get the shot! Wear your box of masks and you can return to normal! The .0002% of the the unvaxxed are driving 142% of the pandemic in 11% of the hospitals 2% of the time along a moving 7 day average!
"Why am I still locked down?"
Because you're a refusenik!
I got the shot.
Because you're a booster-booster refusenik!
Ok I appreciate sarcasm as much as anyone, but has someone stolen your handle? Or do you have mets to the brain?
Misinformation is part of the learning process. It's how we learn as a society. Six months after we invaded Iraq, 69% of the American people--a majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents--still believed that Saddam Hussein was personally complicit in 9/11. People know that's ridiculous now--and that's not just in spite of the misinformation. It's probably because of the misinformation. As we argue about what's true and what's false, we learn.
Most people didn't know anything about Islam before 9/11, and most people knew little or nothing about vaccines, the effectiveness of masks, concerns over the availability of ICU beds, etc. before the pandemic. Why would we know about these things before they were thrust on us by the pandemic, and why would we assume that everybody would start from the standpoint of perfect information? We always start from a position of ignorance.
And now everyone is an “expert”.
Some people believe things about the issues because they like or don't like the implications. Socialists who know nothing about global warming may say everyone who doesn't believe in it is stupid, and people who hate socialism may refuse to believe in it--because they wisely suspect socialists will use it as an excuse to implement socialist policies.
Those kinds of average "experts" aren't the problem with misinformation. In the end, the mobile WMD labs never existed and Saddam Hussein's search for yellowcake in Niger was a hoax. And even the experts who supported the Iraq War back then understand that was misinformation now--even if they support the Iraq War for other reasons today. That's another way of saying that while misinformation, like the Flat Earth Society, may persist with the cranks over time, but it doesn't prevail in the general population.
Average people really do become more like "experts" over time. We've already debunked what the real experts were telling us in April of 2020 about the pandemic. Average people know more about some of those pandemic related things now than the CDC did in April of 2020. Average people really do become something like experts over time--by way of misinformation--whether the misinformation comes from anti-vax cranks or the CDC and the NIH,
I've been more right about the progress of Covid than the CDC has so . . .
They told us the vaccine was 100% effective and you could neither carry nor transmit the disease.
They never said that!
Shows multiple videos!
*thinks* That was before they knew about the Delta Burke variant, and before it was dominant!
They walked the statement back two days later, long before they "new about the Delta Burke Variant".
See! They're honest!
Yes, but that continued to be touted by many people.
Science isn't an exact science! It's more of an artform! But the artform is settled! So get your vaccine, wear your box of surgical masks and get your boosters!
Circa April of 2020, the CDC told us there was no way they'd have a vaccine available within a year.
We had three vaccines available within a year.
And I hope my larger point isn't getting lost, which is that the alternative to tolerating "misinformation" isn't taking the CDC's and the NIH's word for everything. Per the appeal to authority fallacy, we shouldn't believe anything just because the CDC says so.
Science is a process predicated on the understanding that the things that are most likely to be true are the things that can withstand the most and best scrutiny. Something we once thought to be true is disproved every day. And what progressives call "misinformation" is simply average people coming to terms with that. It's part of the learning curve.
That's a lie Diane. No one in authority ever said the vaccines were 100%, except maybe Trump promised that, but who believes him?
They have always been described as slightly over 90% effective, which average to good for virus vaccines.
You guys have been spreading BS non-stop and if you don't know it, I guess stupid is better than being a liar.
Explain what you know about Pfizer's claim of 95% vaccine efficacy in their trial.
Make it really clear, so we know that you're not just regurgitating anything that Sanjay Gupta reads off the teleprompter: use the numbers that Pfizer claims were generated in their trial (NCT04368728). The munged data (i.e., not the raw data, which would enable independent analysis) is here -> https://www.fda.gov/media/144245/download
Be careful to explain which of the primary end-points you're referring to: the end-points are listed in the 'Outcome Measures' section of the trial page on ClinicalTrials.gov for NCT04368728.
Show us the basis on which you purport to say anything about the jabs, that we shouldn't just chuck in the bucket marked "garbage regurgitated by a self-promoting NPC".
It's for the children...
P.S. Circa April of 2020, the CDC was still wrong about how long it would take for vaccines to become widely available; they were wrong about the likely origin of the pandemic, and they were wrong about other things. Circa July of 2007, few people knew anything about collateralized mortgage obligations. A year and a half later, as people became more informed, we were dealing with a lot less misinformation. Circa November of 2020, hardly anyone knew anything about the way votes were counted in Arizona and Georgia, . . .
Ken you ignorant slut, no one promised anything about vaccines being ready except Trump who lies about everything. Expert opinion in the spring and summer of 2020 was we would most likely have a tested vaccine in spring of 2021. Scientists beat that by about 5 months. You want to criticize them for beating the predictions, or the predicters for being conservative?
What an a..hole.
True.
How do we end the pandemic of shitty government?
No one has ever figured that one out.
We convince a critical mass of our fellow Americans that the government isn't the solution to most of our problems.
COVID is a red herring.
Uhm, Nick . . . the pandemic is already over.
1. Fire Fauci
2. Declare the pandemic is over.
3. Eliminate the CDC.
4. Discharge the man in a skirt who pretends to be an Admiral.
4. Pass a constitutional amendment that any emergency declared by any executive official must be ratified by the appropriate level legislature within 14 calendar days. No executive declaration can be extended or reissued.
They will follow through with thus. In two weeks.
Nothing spreads misinformation in this nation faster than the promised use of Gov-Guns...
Because citizens have been so oppressed by those Gov-Guns lately it's now the #1 demanded resource in everyone lives. I miss the days when people could create and build their lives without constantly living in fear of those Nazi Gov-Guns or else in fear of loosing their POWER of Nazi Gov-Guns.
Gov-Guns =/= Wealth!

Here's your disinformation. Fools like most of you ignoring the fact that the Delta variant burned a wheely in the red states were anti-vaxxers predominated and left thousands dead and permanently f..ked up while filling the ICUs there, thus keeping other patients out. Guess who those patients and corpses were? Overwhelmingly those not vaccinated.
WTF is wrong with you people?
So then why are vaccinated people in blue states still being told to wear two masks or else they'll die?
Kevin, how about a link for that nonsensical claim. By the way, covid vaccines at best are about 90% effective, just like other virus vaccinations, so even those who have gotten theirs are at risk, though not nearly as much as those who haven't been.
Stop relying on the NYT morning briefing as your only source. They are literally pulling and manipulating numbers out of their ass because this is precisely what they want to see.
I agree with the efficacy of vaccine, and personally see what happens to those who choose not to [vastly those who are older and or have comorbidities] though that remains their right. It is not a one size fits all panacea.
Quo, I don't look at the NYT's morning briefing and don;t know what that is. Too many here are more concerned with their perceived enemies (the demon Fauci, the NYTs!) and reading their minds for more cultural warfare than they are with the obvious truths staring them in the face. You seem smarter than that, but let's drop the NYTs as somehow a necessary player in this.
Yes it is the right of those who choose to not be vaccinated, but like many rights, not without responsibilities and consequences. With a highly contagious disease the rest of us have a right to not be indiscriminately subjected to their contact. If those who choose not to be vaccinated were responsible enough to voluntarily retreat from those type social situation, we wouldn't need mandates. Most are not.
No, you don't have a right to dictate others' behavior. That's just not how rights work.
It doesn't matter; The federal government has NO authority.
Get the 2/3rds Congress and State Ratification or F-OFF!
Keep it in your State, County or City.
TJJ, the courts have decided already that OSHA has authority so the question is whether the OSHA mandates are within that authority. We'll see what the courts say. Of course the federal government has authority over it's employees.
Courts get things wrong all the time.
Blatantly........... Gets them wrong right down to flat out crockery ignorance. And by far by leftard one's who pretend Democracy instead of a Constitution rules the nation.
Nothing spoke that louder than Amy Barrett's confirmation where most all Democrats only question was if she'd dismiss the Constitution if it was "popular". Plus their sympathy poster posturing with the EXACT same intent
By all means; they just as well have said, "We don't support you unless you IGNORE the U.S. Constitution".
That you needed to write that is an indictment of Joe Friday the whip-licker - given Korematsu; Buck v Bell; and Dred Scott.
I could list another 15 or 20 SCOTUS cases where it's contentious that the BlackRobes were just fulfilling their role as power's lickspittles (although they always landed on the 'right' side when push came to shove).
I can understand the temptation of the blue pill: given the same opportunity as Cypher, I would bite that pill out of the hand that wielded it. Ignorance IS bliss - the level of ignorant self-assurance exhibited by Friday and the Karens is proof-positive.
ὁ δὲ ἀνεξέταστος βίος οὐ βιωτὸς ἀνθρώπῳ - but only if you've already started the journey to ἀρετῆς; if not, the unexamined life is one of relative ease - just repeat what CNN tells you and you're guaranteed to get pats on the head.
Misinformation and bad policy can only be defeated by robust, open debate in the public square.
Something the current Administration is trying desperately to suppress. The good news, every pandemic in history has eventually ended,
This is like reading an article from the DEA on how to end the war on drugs.
Stop all the healthy folks getting tested with a test that can't test for a virus. Turn off your TV. AND wham bam thank u mam. The Kungflu goes away in a New York minute. No place in America r ambulances screaming all over the town. No graveyard in any town looks like a construction site full of backhoes. No hospitals r over ( ICU wings maybe) run and setting up triage centers on the lawn. Nobody's dying in the streets. If a REAL pandemic existed.., would we be arguing its existence? Why did the government have to spend millions on marketing, advertising and psychological research TO CONVINCE the public of a pandemic? The mask r nothing but theater for a visual of "something must be wrong". As no one ACTUALLY sees ALL this supposed death and carnage. Medical supplies were down almost 20 % in 2020. Hospital's r getting rid of staff. This Plandemic has been planned for decades. The folks running the SHOW have for years been telling ALL what was to come. It's Harvest time fools. We r being separated into Goats and Sheep. The shot..., is meant for humanity to make a choice on which one they will be. Bye sheep..., and good riddance.
The Phucko Knows
Nice article.........
Great work
I gave this podcast a full listen. The speaker is known for fighting for the bitter truth and that gave him the right to present his case whatever it may be. It quickly became obvious that I disagreed with him strongly.
Unfortunately, after listening to this episode I am not convinced by his arguments, or more precisely- lack thereof. His arguments were- trust me- I'm a scientist. I'll go over few of the main problems.
1. Listen to scientist. Ok. Why listen to those who are repeating the unprecedented propaganda and censorship? Why not listen to someone like dr. Robert Malone, the inventor of mRNA vaccines? He is sounding the alarm and his story makes a lot more sense than the main narrative, given what we know in spite of the unprecedented propaganda and censorship.
Given the propaganda and censorship at play- if they were to say that water is wet, I'd have serious trouble believing it about now. Those responsible for both propaganda and censorship need to face a trial first so that public trust could be regained.
2. How is a decade of safety testing safely trunked to a few months? That sounds like 9 doctors can deliver a baby in a month. How is no "expert" bothered by this? Why is situation an exception to the rule?
3. The need for endless unexpected boosters is a huge red flag. They show that none of the available vaccines are neither safe no effective. This uncensorable admission that vaccines are unexpectedly poor, needing life long boosters is a clear confirmation that universal vaccination is not only stupid, but wrong.
It’s unfortunate the speaker didn’t attempt to address this or any other safety/sanity point. He dwelled on not being able to convince people that there are no chips in the vaccines, as if that is the main problem, or that they are all equally implausible.
4. If the danger of corona is only to me and I have a choice between corona and vaccine- shouldn’t that me MY choice? And given the problems listed so far, it seems anyone rational and healthy should pick corona over the leaky, untrustworthy, problem-inducing vaccines.
His continued fighting for free expression and search for truth and preservation of knowledge is still something I fully support. But I wasn’t convinced by this presentation at all. His dismissal of Florida/Texas as luck is deeply problematic. It should have challenged his presumptions, but unfortunately it didn’t.
I enjoyed the story about the Greek mythology at the beginning. Thank you for sharing this video. I hope you address some of my concerns before we’re locked in a war for freedom over government/business overreach. If I’m wrong, I’d like to know. Thank you for reading and have a nice day.
