Justin Amash: The Libertarian Party Needs To Stop 'Edge-Lording' and Get Serious About Elections
The former Michigan congressman says "horrible messaging" is a sign of insecurity.

Can the Libertarian Party (L.P.) become "a major contender that consistently wins elections?"
If the organization's dismal, 50-year track record in winning elections isn't discouraging enough, now the L.P. is in disarray after its chairman and two members of its national committee resigned in the wake of an attempt to decertify the New Hampshire affiliate due to conflicts over its social media presence.
This episode has revealed an organization at war with itself over vision, tactics, and messaging.
To get a better sense of what's going on, Nick Gillespie spoke with former Rep. Justin Amash (L–Mich.), who finished his five terms in office as the first and only Libertarian to hold national office. He had been elected as a Republican, became an Independent, and affiliated with the L.P. for the last few months of his tenure. Amash flirted with a run for the L.P.'s presidential nomination in 2020 before choosing to drop out of consideration. Despite not holding an official position in the party's leadership, he is its best-known member.
In the wake of the recent scandal, he chastised the New Hampshire affiliate for its "horrible messaging" even as he said attempts to remove its leadership were illegitimate. "I'm committed to making [the L.P.] a major contender that consistently wins elections," he wrote. "We must work together to build a big-tent party that can take on the old parties and defend the rights of the people."

You have to abandon libertarian principles to save libertarianism
Certainly nothing edgelordy about accusing half of the country of being racist troglodyte terrorists.
Amash needs to shut his fucking pie hole, basically.
Making money online more than 15$ just by doing simple work from home. I have received $18376 last month. Its an easy and simple job to do and its earnings are BB much better than regular office job and even a little child can do this and earns money. Everybody must try this job by just use the info

Well if you worked 200 hours a week, which there aren’t that many hours but let’s pretend there are, at $15 an hour that’s $3k a week and $12k a month so how the hell did you make $18k last month. Asking for a friend.
^^^ THIS
Yeah, was really unimpressed with him in this interview. Sounded more like a mainstream democrat than anything approaching a libertarian. The whole bit about "equality before the law oughta mean that rich people should get penalized" was an early red flag in the interview, and he didn't get any better after that.

deja what?
Don't be alarmed. Although you're usually seeing double by noon as a result of downing a quart of bottom shelf plastic bottle Walmart brand vodka, this is in fact just Reason posting the same article twice as they do every time Justin Amash puts out a press release.
So dreamy.
I thought amashs entire career was edge lording. He named 2 post offices. Never passed a bill of consequence.
Did Amash name one after Spooner? If not he's no libertarian.
They should nominated candidates who are former Republicans and will praise Hillary Clinton.
Nothing says "serious about elections" like running the same has-been loser Republican politicians who've been drummed out of public office for 20 years.
Good luck with that. If the commentariat here is any indication, being edge-lord auth-rights with perhaps 1 or 2 libertarian principles who the Republican party can take for granted is the central identity of "libertarians" these days.
Yeah, the people who think the government shouldn't tell you how to run your business, what to think, or bomb people in foreign countries are the authoritarians.
You're not truly free unless you're free to bake a cake for a faggot at gunpoint.
Sooo...Your prom date from many Moons ago dumped you for the big, burly Quarterback on the high school football team?...
And your hubby divorced you for that hot hunk of man-flesh in IT?...
And you caught your smooth twink college guy son in the middle of a DAP daisy-chain assfuck threesome?....on the very same bed where you caught your hubby and his Alpha Male top lover?...
And the only action your dried-up beef jerky vajayjay can get is when you're invited to a GLAAD Benefit Sex Toy Party?...
Is that's what's getting you down there, Becky???...
Dude, she triggered you hard, didn't she?

Don't forget that to people like fafa, taxes are a form of liberty. Same with increased regulations. It gives people the liberty to not have yo decide what to spend money on or how to do it. True freedom.
The commentariat here has a dictionary where 'libertarian' is just before 'litter box'. Hence the confusion about where to shit when in a hurry.
JFree, the cowardly piece of lefty shit whose idea of liberty is government-mandated lockdowns and mask orders.
Nothing says 'freedom' like 'People should consult an approved dictionary in order to know where to take a shit.'
I enjoy the subtext that JFree appears to be incapable of conceiving of any other words between 'libertarian' and 'lit-' that people would use on a daily basis.
no kids @the 7:00 article it gets a little blue
Write like Ernest Hemingway? The guy who was on the payroll of the NKVD/KGB?
don't even wanna know what edge-lording means.
Amash apparently does it enough to use it as a type of metaphor.
I really don’t expect the Libertarian Party to spend a lot of time and effort improving their execution so they can still lose elections anyway.
Rational resource allocation, after all. I expect people help have no chance of winning to run around naked except for huge hats while screaming about legalizing LSD NOW!
The "edge-lording" tweets I'd seen posted by the LPNH seemed entirely consistent with the NAP and libertarian principle. More so than launching witch hunts in the name of "anti-racism".
So, if the "pragmatic" libertarians are so eager to compromise principle to avoid offending the sensibilities of non-libertarians, are they going to start compromising on church-state separation to satisfy Christian conservatives, support for the police to satisfy law-and-order conservatives, and rallying around the flag to satisfy civic nationalists? Or is compromise something the LP reserves to keep in the good graces of progressives?
And this is how the LP never gets any of their candidates elected.
Fine we'll take your "edge lords" (whatever the fuck that means and I'm not looking it up) in the GOP, the squishy squeamish remainder can keep secretly voting democrat. They're your caucus anyway.
But please take our utterly ridiculous RINOs as well because they vote democrat anyway and bend over every time someone screams "racist!"
Remind me Nick, when exactly did Amash win an election as a Libertarisn? If you can't get basic facts straight without dishonesty why would I believe anything else you present to be honest. Sorry if the two of you see nothing worth fighting for in the concepts of freedom and liberty but lucky for you the Democrats are right there for you.
Team L has two problems: no money, and few candidates that can effectively articulate a libertarian message to the electorate. It is not rocket science. Develop an effective apparatus to raise money in small dollar amounts (think Act Blue app, versus just a few wealthy donors); 'up' their digital game - significantly.
Then the better candidates will come. And for damned sure, if someone looking like Vermin Supreme is truly a serious contender for Team L leadership, Team L will go nowhere. Jorgensen had some mishaps in her campaign (BLM comments come to mind). What I would tell her is that practice makes perfect. She is intelligent and articulate. To me, she is the lead candidate for 2024 for Team L (assuming she wants another try).
I still think going local is the way to leverage - not money but the lack of money. The two models of politics since the 1890's are:
top-down with big money, ad buys, consultants, PR/messaging
bottom-up with precinct organizing, grassroots activity, GOTV, etc.
The latter doesn't need much money (except to seed it) because actual grassroots activity is what money is the inferior replacement for. D's and R's win (or compete) in those areas where they have the latter. In large part because the bottom-up stuff provides a positive reason to vote for X rather than Y on some issue of local importance.
L's don't have the bottom-up stuff anywhere. They (including the Mises with their bold messaging BS) think the top-down stuff is the only model that exists. But they're wrong - and they don't have the money/skills to succeed at that even if they were right. Oh - and the top-down (mass communication) model is precisely the model that is at odds with all libertarian (individualist) principles.
But hey - maybe pigs will fly in to deliver donuts.
The LP has one problem a constituency that doesn't believe the government should exist.
WTF is "Edge-Lording"? Jesus, do I need a "zoomer dictionary" to follow politics now?
If you post something "edgy" you're an "edgelord". Since "edgy" now includes the most trivial, innocuous shit you are literally en "edgelord" if you post snippets from the Declaration of Independence.
Was not "Edgelord' also a playable character in the Soulcalibur series of games?
Says the man who has not won office as a Libertarian, and only became a member of the Libertarian Party when it became clear he was not going to be re-elected and declined to even try.
What is with Reason's love affair with Amash? Has he actually done anything the slightest bit libertarian, or is this just some weird politician crush?
He sucks the same deep state/leftist oligarch dick Reason does.
Both play their roles as controlled (occasional) "opposition"
He said no a lot and accomplished nothing.
Don't look at me explains the phenomenon pretty eloquently above.
What, and put 'reason' out of business and its adherents out of their basements?
Stop giving this idiot press. He’s a loser.
Libertarian edging? Kinky.
"This episode has revealed an organization at war with itself over vision, tactics, and messaging."
So they really republicans after all?
are
Amash's real plan: Run as republican in a republican district, then change parties after being elected.
Justin Amash. Ha! Not worth any more of my time.
