Mostly Weekly Series Finale: Creative Destruction
In the final episode, we tackle how free markets break and make stuff.
Reason's webseries "Mostly Weekly" is wrapping up–for entirely legal reasons that absolutely do not involve tax evasion. No reason to be suspicious.
The final episode of the series tackles creative destruction. In free and open markets people are able to make new technologies and business models, which displace older, established ones. That process of starting new companies and jobs destroys some professions while creating others.
It's entirely understandable that people who lose their jobs want to keep them. But industries like manufacturing, coal mining, and mall retailers aren't dying out because of competition from China, they're being outmoded by automation, cheaper fuel sources, and online sales.
Despite the uncertainty that markets bring, they also create new jobs and entirely new professions. There aren't gangs of unemployed lamplighters roaming the land; their descendants became Uber drivers, social media coordinators, and webseries producers.
In the end, it's better for everyone to look at the world as it is and to move forward than to try and halt progress through the force of law.

No. Why is this happening? Please tell me you're not leaving Heaton.
#MeToo claims another of our heroes.
Just because Sara can't keep her ravenous hunger under control why must Heaton suffer? Why must we suffer?
This is terrible. This series was my favorite content at Reason. Why did Heaton and Sarah destroy their creative energy by falling prey to the unactualized sexual tension that was the driving force of this duo?
Sounds like I'm joking, but I'm really going to miss this feature. I really hope that Heaton and Sara will still be around. I loved your stuff. I don't know if you read the comments, but if you do know that I liked the cut of your jib.
Ahem, it's "I like the way your jib is carved," BUCS.
Seconded. I enjoyed the hell out of every one of these. They're fun and informative, and, honestly, just a good break from typical news. I'll be sad to see my Mostly Weekly show go.
Creative Destruction.
"We're not criminals, we're not. We're just regular people," said a transient woman.
One of the campers spoke with us off-camera. She says she's lived in the woods off Myers Way for four years. She mostly wants the city to leave her and the other campers alone but would also like city crews to do a better job of cleaning up the trash in the encampment.
Clean up your own shit. Jesus, that's presumptive of this person.
She says she's lived in the woods off Myers Way for four years.
I didn't even catch that. This crisis is worse than I thought. Four years she's been living out there. I only noticed the encampment last year when the trash was literally pouring down the hill onto the freeway.
I have no idea, I don't know that area of Seattle. I mostly stay on the eastside. I just know that there will not be a solution because no one wants to particularly solve it either way. Many people want to appear caring about it, but few care about the homeless people, and few care about the non-homeless people who are also being impacted by the streets constantly reeking of piss.
This is my favorite anecdote that I have about this current homeless issue in Seattle. There's a morning show I listen to while driving to work when I'm running late, the Tom and Curly Show. It's a classic liberal versus "conservative" pairing and they were talking about the homeless issue.
Tom, the liberal one, was talking about the homeless crisis and how we as a city need to do more to help with this, that people are hurting, if we can save one life yadda, yadda, yadda. John Curly talked about how the city needs to make building easier, that it's almost impossible to build housing in the city and this affects supply and this has a major impact on affordability in the city.
Tom's response was basically, "It's hard because we don't want to change the character of the city." And upon hearing that, all I can say is that person doesn't give a shit about solving anything. They just want to virtue signal. Making new jobs that we can graft the tax payers on and virtue signaling is all this homeless crisis really is.
I have no idea, I don't know that area of Seattle. I mostly stay on the eastside.
Which one of these guys is you?
Trash, obviously.
Wait a minute, John Curly is the "conservative" one?
Ok...
Actually he calls himself a libertarian. So, we can all just let that sink in. I fear that perhaps he's what passes in polite seattle society as a libertarian.
Shit, last time I looked the closest libertarian discussion is at a Denny's in Kitsap county somewhere.
Huh, my sister lives in Kitsap county. Next time I'm over there I'll have to swing by the Denny's and look for the cos-players ordering the Moons Over My Hammy.
Spoiler alert on Black Panther!
Creative destruction is a necessary part of progress, you have to leave the safe, comfortable nest if you want to soar off into unknown territories. Still, there is always a touch of nostalgia for the old and it's understandable that people might want to hang on to what they know and trust. For example, my great-grandfather was a blacksmith who specialized in forging slave shackles. Nobody built them stronger or heavier or more uncomfortable than old Jedediahskids, they said. By the time his kids came of age, that trade was no longer available and his descendants have had to turn to such pursuits as telemarketing, designing pop-up ads, developing reality TV shows and inventing new flavors of Doritos. (One of my uncles invented the concept of "one size fits all" and another invented the automated phone menu. My mother was the talent agent who introduced Don Henley to Glenn Frey.) So it all evens out in the end.
It figures a slaver was the one who changed Doritos. Jay Leno swore up and down I could eat all I want and they would make more. Then they changed the recipes of Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese Doritos on me with no warning. I complained to Frito-Lay and they sent me a coupon for a bag of Doritos -- the new flavor ones.
I miss old Cooler Ranch as well. But the best Doritos of all are still made, so go get some Tapatio ones.
No don't go! WTF!
I linked these videos to proggie friends all the time. The humor angle is like a dull blade that could almost cut through the thickness of a skull.
I too will miss MOSTLY WEEKLY. Ending for "legal reasons?" A little more explanation would be appreciated. Still. I hope the two principals will still be appearing and announcing on REASON in the near future.

I'm guessing one of Heaton's slave orphans escaped his monocle factory or diamond mine and went to the authorities. That's why I sew my slave orphans mouths shut and make sure they don't know to go to the authorities if they escape (I tell them that the authorities will kill them without hesitation and show them youtube videos of cops shooting unarmed civilians to drive the point home - it's worked so far).
Creative destruction is a part of live and we should learn to move on. It is really easy to watch movies and tv shows on showbox
Damnit... just damnit. I've been waiting for weeks now for the next Mostly Weekly episode so that I could make a joke about changing the name to Mostly Monthly. Not only do you pull the plug on the best thing on Reason, but now my joke doesn't work. (The joke wouldn't have been that funny anyway, so I guess I get the last laugh... or the only laugh... just damnit.)
The show will be missed, hope y'all stick around Reason.com.
thank you
No, thank you.
BRITCHES!
It's always Britches.
This is much, much sadder news than Hawking taking the long dirt nap.
I hope Heaton and Siskind continue making great comedy together on some other platform where they will receive a wider audience.
Guys I feel like this is a really bad idea.
WHO IS FLYING THIS THING?!
The mall in my neighborhood is going to become the station for the high speed rail line to be built between Houston and Dallas. I'm not quite sure that's progress.
Look at the bright side... no Transport Sozialist Arbeiterpartei groping your panties, stealing your nail clippers or breaking your gear!
Great. Andrew is fun, informative, entertaining, quick-witted, doesn't constantly interrupt people or ramble incoherently like some other fossils begging to be downsized or outsourced to Mother Jones Lite... So what's next? Sharpening up the axe to go after Remy?
Whats with the goddamn camel toe on his pants ?
Whose really bad idea was it to end this? Heaton is god damn hilarious! Seriously Reason, I mean I love you guys but this is a big mistake, unless we get more Heaton through something else.
And this is not Andrew Heaton
The apps which are working as increasing social connections of the people are none other than best love apps which always shares information of nearby matches according to the likes and dislikes.
Hopefully the Supreme Court will force Reason to keep producing Mostly Weekly for the sake of freedom and liberty!
I will miss this feature. Thank you for producing it.
