Should We Draw a Line Between Louis C.K. and 'Low-Level Lechery'?: Podcast
Journalist Cathy Young talks frankly about sexual harassment in the workplace.
Since sexual assault and harassment charges have come out against film mogul Harvey Weinstein, there's been an outpouring of other, similar charges against male entertainment figures, journalists and politicians. Most recently, comedian Louis CK has admitted to masturbating in front on non-consenting women and Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore has been accused of sexual improprieties with a 14 year old girl back in the 1980s.
And at least since the outing of Bill Cosby as an alleged serial predator, the dismissal of Fox News chief Roger Ailes, and the Donald Trump tape where he brags about grabbing women by the genitals, sexual harassment has been a major topic of conversation.
Is what's happening the purging of the last vestiges of the old patriarchy? Or is it a long-delayed equalizing of the sexes that has barely gotten started? And is there a risk that a new puritanism will arise that essentially criminalizes workplace banter and romance?
To discuss all this and more, Nick Gillespie talks with Cathy Young, a contributing editor to Reason and a columnist for Newsday. She's been writing about gender since the 1990s and is the author of the essential book, Cease Fire: Why Women and Men Must Join Forces to Achieve True Equality. Young's Twitter feed is here and make sure to read her recent Los Angeles Times op-ed, "Is 'Weinsteining' getting out of hand?," which argues there's a categorical difference between the criminal acts of Harvey Weinstein and what one female journalist called "the low-level lechery" of former New Republic book review editor Leon Wieseltier.

No, most recently, George Takei is now a sexual predator. Try to keep up, Reason.
In light of all this, I look forward to being pilloried by Hollywood elites during the next largely unwatched awards cerimony.
While getting drunk and trying to make a move on somebody possibly passed out is something that nearly every person that imbibes alcohol has been both victim and offender of, and I think this story is a pretty big nothing, it is spectacular watching Takei fall victim to his own self-righteous standards and hypocrisy.
He also blamed it on the Russians. Like he literally blamed the news story on Russian bots.
He also blamed it on the Russians. Like he literally blamed the news story on Russian bots.
When the only tool you have is a hammer...
You try to find your sickle?
These rich SJWs just never imagined that the witch hunts would be flipped and used against them.
Fuck Takei. It takes a real idiot savant to support the State when you were literally a victim of an American concentration camp.
Seriously, fuck Takei. His posts and public statements reveal what a shallow and feeble intellect he has.
Oh my!
Not only that, but to join and promote the very party that sent you to the concentration camps.
FDR did what he had to do.
Are we talking about Eleanor?
In that case, "Ohhhh myyyy."
"Fuck Takei. It takes a real idiot savant to support the State when you were literally a victim of an American concentration camp."
We have a neighbor who was born in the Lake Tule camp; she would never vote anything but D.
Stupid is equally distributed among the racial groups.
So stupidity is not voting for Republicans.
Yet the most important Republican in the world cannot speak in coherent English.

Look Paul, if you keep pointing out people like Kevin Spacey and George Takei you'll ruin the narrative that we're finally shedding some horrible regime of women being dominated by men. All we'll be left with is the tangentially-libertarian notion that 'power corrupts'.
No one has yet explained to me the problem with inviting women to your place and then masturbating in front of them, if they are free to leave whenever they want. Yes, it is tasteless and rude, and to be condemned from a moral perspective, but in terms of the NAP, were there any violations? I am guessing the standard answer is a woman would feel assaulted, because there is the threat of what else the guy will do, and I completely agree. But suppose Louis CK is upfront from the get go that he will not touch them, but just want to pleasure himself.
Again, I am not condoning this behavior and fully condemn it. However, as someone interested in libertarian theory, is there an NAP violation just for masturbating in front of someone?
or how good his aim is.
Yes, it is tasteless and rude, and to be condemned from a moral perspective, but in terms of the NAP, were there any violations? I am guessing the standard answer is a woman would feel assaulted, because there is the threat of what else the guy will do, and I completely agree.
You just answered your own question.
Is there an NAP violation just for masturbating in front of someone?
If a person is okay with it then of course not.
So, do we use a reasonable person standard? If a reasonable person feels threat of harm by someone masturbating in front of them, it is assault?
I think you know the danger of this. What if the reasonable person feels threatened by their neighbor owning a gun?
I think you know the danger of this. What if the reasonable person feels threatened by their neighbor owning a gun?
Then hope they're in Florida where self pre-defense is legal?
I have a hard time justifying criminalizing indecent exposure. I don't believe that anyone is actually harmed simply be seeing someone's naughty bits that they didn't want to see.
As long as he didn't make any threats or try to stop people leaving after he took it out, I really don't think any crime happened, as distasteful as the behavior is.
I agree. I should be able to mow my lawn naked if it's hot out. It is a good strategy if you don't want to get tackled.
Not if your neighbor is Kevin Spacey.
Louis CK actually did a pretty good job of explaining why his actions were wrong. You should look it up.
Long story short though? It's about power, and how a power imbalance can fuzz the lines between consented and coerced.
The only problem with the 'power' argument-- which isn't new at all-- is quantifying that power in the context of legislation or the legal system.
Sure, but that's why no one is accusing him criminal perversion?, just general perversion.
It's okay to frown on behavior without trying to make it criminal.
________
?Last I checked, anyway. I really can't be arsed to keep up with this stuff.
No one has yet explained to me the problem with inviting women to your place and then masturbating in front of them
The problem is I can't get anyone to say 'yes' to it.
Well, I'd certainly consider it a sort of "violation of my space", depending in part on their proximity to me and the extent to which their action seemed directed at me (simply jerking off while staring at the horizon while sitting 50' away on a nude beach might be distasteful to me, but wouldn't seem "aggressive", in contrast to standing over me while I was in bed, staring and jerking at me). Whether I considered it truly "threatening" would depend on their other behavior, seeming propensity for violence, and whether I thought I could defend myself against them if it came to that.
And being in somebody's home, without my own transportation handy, might make me feel more "trapped" than I would be in my own home (and could tell them to get the hell out) or if my car was parked outside.
Asking someone in advance, and assuring them of their safety, and taking no for an answer, would to my mind not be "aggressive", but would still be impolite and crude if it was out-of-the-blue, and asked of someone you'd not previously broached an intimate topics with. I think it would comprise a violation of business ethics if you did it with a potential employee, because of the implication that you'd better assent if you want the job/my support. I'd consider it in no way a criminal offense, but it's clearly in the category of things where the asker assumes the risk that their companion will mock them and tell everyone how disgusting they are.
You are missing the fact that even if the women didn't say "no" and were free to leave, they were held captive by the awesome mind powers of the white male and were helpless victims but who could change their mind and object years later. No means no and yes means no if you are ugly or not a good lover or don't send flowers later.
These new stories that basically imply that 80-year old George HW Bush telling inappropriate jokes from his wheelchair is the same league as child rape are kind of infuriating, mostly because most journalists still are ignoring Bill Clinton's role in all this.
From the very beginning, I've said Bill is why Trump won. Hillary is the only woman the planet who didn't have the high ground, and the press refuses to admit their mistakes about Bill Clinton.
That is the goal of the feminists here. They want to make telling a woman she looks nice or has a nice outfit or asking a woman out and being turned down on the same level as some real degenerate like Louis CK or Clinton or Weinstein. No, telling a dirty joke is not rape or even exposing yourself to someone. What Louis CK did was indecent exposure and a crime. Exposing yourself to unwilling women is also one of the strongest tells of a real predator. Many serial rapists or child molesters start out by getting off on exposing themselves to strange people. I seriously doubt this is the only thing in this area that Louis CK has done. It might be, but if it is, he is rare.
That is the goal of the feminists here
All of them?
Since criminalizing that sort of behavior has been their goal for at least 25 years going back to Bob Packwood, yes. I am sure you can find me one or two that will at least claim otherwise. But, you can find one or two of anything. What is your point?
Oh, you are Crusty so you don't have one.
Since criminalizing that sort of behavior has been their goal
All of them?
It's true. Some (male) feminists just want to get laid.
Some of them?
Some male feminists are gay men.
Gay dudes don't want to get laid?
Just the ones I don't compliment on their tits.
I've heard that "gateway offense" and "most go on to worse offenses" assertion in the context of child porn, and it just seems unlikely to me. I think pretty much all deviant behaviors exist on a sort of pyramid, with the more extreme offenses being perpetrated by a distinct minority. Maybe most serial killers begin by torturing animals, but most animal torturers don't go on to be serial killers. "Pre-crimes" may mean you've a greater likelihood of doing worse things, but it's in no way an assurance that you will.
Has Juanita Broaddrick deployed the MeToo hashtag yet?
"mostly because most journalists still are ignoring Bill Clinton's role in all this."
You are a parody of yourself.
Yes the press totally ignored Bill's indiscretions. That impeachment thing also never happened.
Comparing Trump's alleged lechery to Bill's, how many times do you think Trump should be impeached?
They did until Drudge and the National Enquirer?the freaking National Enquirer, how does that shit happen? yanked the story into the mainstream so much so that the press had to cover it.
... And then they seriously overcovered it, like anything Clinton-related.
By making excuses that the matter was an unwarranted intrusion into his private life.
It was. It was a revolting spectacle of partisan politics at its most cynical. Newt turned out to be a bigger creep than Bill, if you'll recall. The entire lynch party in fact was either cheating on their wives or fucking little boys.
How many times was Clinton brought to trial on formal allegations, as compared to Trump?
Clinton got caught in a perjury trap. Trump admitted to obstruction of justice and treason on live TV without any prompting.
You understand what the word "perjury" means, right?
How was Clinton's "perjury trap" set up, pray tell? Wasn't he on trial for something? Can you remind me, my memory seems to be fuzzy . . .
The diluting of language, such that "sexual assault" now seems to apply equally both to physical coersion and armed threat to obtain sex, and to putting your hand on someone's butt, is an asinine development.
I had no idea whip-out men were still in vogue.
Crank up the Bananarama, everything old is new again!
The timing is TDS, gold digging, and stupid people reporting sexual stuff after the statute of limitations with a few serious rapes thrown in.
Absent guilty verdicts in a court of law, what's happening is a witch hunt.
And people say Twitter isn't useful.
Or admissions. Hasn't Louis CK admitted this is true?
Louis C.K. was in HIS hotel room, IIRC. The women could have left.
The severity of his actions, as he admitted to, are pervey but are minor.
I am sorry but if women and the government spent this much time and effort going after actual rapists, we might have more solved rape cases.
It's no wonder why some men get foreign women to marry because the Crazy of some American women is staggering.
The women could have left.
If they had left after he pulled out his hog and started to touch himself it's not sexual harassment?
If you're in a hotel room in Hollywood, you're asking for it.
Just grab a baggie of cocaine off the ground and get on with life.
If you're in someone else's hotel room, you might be asking for it.
What if he closes his eyes and doesn't know if they left? Then the women are in a superposition of being there and not being there, and he is in a superposition of climaxing and not climaxing. Not until he opens his eyes will he know whether or not he came.
a superposition of climaxing and not climaxing.
Once again, the term is "edging".
Does edging usually end with a collapse of the wave function?
If you do it right, yes.
Schrodinger's Pussy?
Apparently good, old fashioned courtship is immoral now. Might as well go to arranged marriages.
Lower divorce rates then what we have at least.
Flip side: Higher domestic violence rates?
No one wants to arrange a second marriage.
I have some friends that married that way. They appear to be very happy.
The biggest difference is that it views marriage in a significantly different way from how it has become in European culture. Marriage is a business contract of sorts, with the goal being raising children. Love doesn't play into it much or at all.
^ This. Lower expectations, more tolerance of cheating.
Yes, I think that the notion that your spouse is always supposed to be your soulmate forever and the only lover you will ever want has a lot to do with the rate of divorce. People want marriage to be some kind of fairy tale love story when it's traditionally been more of a business arrangement with religious trappings.
It's an issue I have with marriage conceptually. It does not, in this modern age, mesh well with the expectations of what a romantic relationship is supposed to be. I won't argue one is right or wrong, but if the value being maximized is "love" then divorce is an obvious action to take when the love is gone.
I think the primary problem is that often times people get married too early in life. They think that once they graduate from college/high school and get a day job that's the next step. Most of the people I know who got married in their 30s and 40s after going through their party phase and establishing a career are quite happy.
Marriage is a business contract of sorts, with the goal being raising children. Love doesn't play into it much or at all.
You're talking about marriage in America now, where divorce is where one party cashes out?
No, that's in reference to how arranged marriage is viewed.
Well, we can't all go "courting" at middle and high schools.
The legal system itself appears to be a witch hunt. Periodically, humans attempt to inject rational counter-measures which could (theoretically) legitimize the process. It seems folks manage to claw rationality from the system as inconvenient to their higher-order goals.
The American legal system looks an awful lot as if it amounts to, "We want to do this to you. We asked some co-workers, and they said it was okay" with a zeitgeist toward it best expressed as "may the odds be ever in your favor".
Apologies. Your central point of conviction by public hysteria is completely valid.
Arguably, the legal system takes the pre-existing and seemingly-universally-human "witch hunt" impulse and puts a leash on it, in an attempt to maximize the community-building aspects of hatred while trying to minimize it's simultaneous community-destroying aspects.
That's for damned sure.
Looks like a good book. There may be nothing wrong with the theory of justice, or a system built around baser instincts leashed and harnessed. Maybe it's just that we allowed the government to seize the means of production and distribution.
When do we burn CK at the stake?
Yesterday.
That red mug is gonna burn for his sins.
The Hollywood virtue-signalling machine is on fire. Excuse me while I don't put it out.
Thank goodness I don't have to deal with today's dating scene. The old "Want to meet for coffee?" is probably still o.k. but if she says "No" then never ask again or you are a harasser. So, ladies, if you want that first date, you better learn to say "Sure" the first time or a man may never ask again.
Being "romantic" and following women to see what their interests are and to surprise them is probably criminal stalking now.
Dave Chappell's was right that you need a love contract just to cover your ass now.
He probably should have gotten a nondisclosure agreement as well.
Good call on the NDA.
I can never tell when you're joking.
I will let you know when I am.
Hold your breath on the count of three: 1...2....3
How many of the situations we have been reading about are similar to the ones you described?
It's implied that, when asking a woman to meet for coffee, the man has his hog out.
It is a money move.
She needs to know if he'll be able to stir the coffee.
"I like my women like i like my coffee... mm mm NNNGH"
With a tight lid?
Ask me again in about half an hour. Whew!
I hope you drilled some air holes into the lid.
Strong, black, and proud.
Hot, overpriced, and available on every street corner.
overpriced and acidic?
I see you've met some of the women i used to date.
Cold, bitter, and in a dumpster?
Hot, black and Irish?
This one.
Puerto Rican?
Cut up into little pieces and kept in the freezer?
you keep coffee in the freezer? you monster
I am such a coffee snob I can't admit to doing hat.
My God.
Weak and tepid?
Full of another man's semen?
+1 Caramel Felchiatto
Best enjoyed raw?
Created by German machine?
This is a very Crusty thing to say.
With a flawless rat tail?
After it has been shared by three large black men?
After it has been passed around by three large black men?
That's better. Good job, studmuffin.
Too hot to handle?
"I don't (sexually or romantically) like women."
Black and boiling? Ground up and in the trash can?
From one of the links:
Apparently what women want is to remain single. *shrugs*
I submit that they don't know what they want. When they're not complaining about men asking them out, they're complaining about men NOT asking them out.
Infrequently, I'm caught at lunch in a happy marriage and/or not having given birth. It kinda makes me think that I should divorce my wife and pass a kidney stone so I have something to contribute to the conversation(s). Then I remember that they don't really want me there in the first place and it makes me feel sorry for their kids.
The scare quotes around flirted really confuses whatever they are saying.
every time they point she sees a penis
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Portland is weird.
Apparently what women want is to remain single. *shrugs*
Or for "flirting" to remain contextually appropriate.
At work or walking along the street? Don't flirt.
At a singles bar, a speed-dating event, on Tindr, or other circumstance where people are explicitly there to flirt and find a date and/or sexual partner? Flirt your heart out. But don't send dick pics without asking first.
Allow me to cure you of that delusion.
She had the wrong reaction. You know what the right reaction is?
"Uh, no thanks, I can't drink coffee late at night, it keeps me up."
And I SF the link.
Loser.
you better learn to say "Sure" the first time or a man may never ask again.
Unfortunately, when a woman says "sure", it can also mean "not if you were the last man on earth". Trust me on this.
We should ask ourselves why there are no women entertainers raping or harassing male interns or the like.
I'd be curious about that bit of this whole morality play.
I bet there are some.
"Collini...out!"
There probably are, but...
(A) women are less likely to rape/harass then men
(B) men are less likely to report being raped/harassed then women
(C) women entertainers aren't as likely to still be relevant when they get old.
Throw those together, and you end up with fewer victims (in total) and of those, even fewer where the perpetrator is still culturally relevant. Layer on men being less inclined to report, and voila: less likely that guys will come forward and accuse old women of harassing them twenty years ago.
Louis CK has admitted to masturbating in front on non-consenting women
Here's how that should have gone.
LCK: Do you ladies mind if I jerk off in front of you?
Ladies: Eww, that's disgusting.
LCK: THEN GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOTEL ROOM WHILE I JERK OFF!
I have always sort of assumed that this is how any encounter with Louis CK would go.
When he imitates sucking in a skit, he carries on about five times longer than the joke. embarrassing himself. Always wondered why. He should just "come out" and admit he's a poofter. They'd give him plaque and sign him up for the parade: he isn't a pervert, he's "gay". Then, as with Spacey, any complaints can be dismissed as homophobia.
Umm, didn't Spacey get canned from some major movie?
He should have hired Clinton's PR firm.
And his TV show was cancelled or something.
And his TV show was cancelled or something.
I assume that all of these sexual molestation stories coming out at once is a massive conspiracy by the sex-crazed patriarchy because I've really stopped giving a shit about any of them.
This is known as the Clinton Gambit.
I thought that was when Hillary manipulates kinetic energy to her desires.
because I've really stopped giving a shit about any of them
And I'm the monster.
I was born without the unlimited outrage gene, it's my cross to bear
it's my cross to bear
Fun fact: baring your cross would in fact be harassment.
You're on notice.
I'm going to assume that most of the people here feel that it's wrong if you have a D after your name but OK if it's an R. Wild guess.
Please, we all know you are a huge fan of the D.
And thank God. I wouldn't want to be wandering around in the minefield that is heterosexuality at the moment.
Hey, Kevin Spacey and Takei messed it up for homosexuality too.
Yeah I know and the kids these days are taking their cues from the social justice extremists. I'm glad I'm not out there dating anymore. "I request permission to suck your cock. Do you grant permission, and could I get that in writing before I commence?"
"Yeah I know and the kids these days are taking their cues from the social justice extremists"
SJWs have been around for a long time and their as clueless today as in the 1960s.
Eh, Halloween was fun. Dress up as a vampire. Approach the hubby, holding the cape in front of my face, speaking with a bad Hollywood-Transylvanian accent "I vant... to suck... your blood... engorged penis!"
Whoops, last line was supposed to be: "Getting consent can ben fun."
Rape and cultural appropriation all at once!
I'm American. Cultural appropriation is my culture.
Well excuse me while I appropriate your culture of cultural appropriation all over the place!
I wouldn't care if my coworker jerked off in his cubicle as long as he kept it quiet and in his own cubicle. I'd be courteous enough to give him some alone time.
I haven't been keeping up with the news for the last 3 minutes, when was Roy Moore convicted? Or did he come out and admit it? Or is Abigail Williams now real?
Mitch McConnell hath deemed Roy Moore bad for the Republican party and has asked that he drop out.
And he wasn't a problem for the GOP prior to the accusation. How convenient for McConnell.
Be fair, McConnell tolerates a lot of wackaloons. He lets Rand Paul be a senator for god's sake (may he rest in peace).
Washington is practically nothing but wackaloons. Roy Moore is no doubt included in that. As far as Rand Paul goes, yeah we all know that the pro-liberty guys are the crazy ones.
To be fair, Tony thinks Senators get to appoint other Senators to be members of Congress.
Tony would have liked Queen Hillary to appoint Senators from her reign on but she LOST. Haha
You'd make a good Republican politician. Wait--have you forced yourself on underage girls? That's not required, but it looks good on the resume.
Well, if we would just repeal the 17th Amendment already...
Tony also thinks that if Trump were impeached, the hag would be president.
That sort of stupidity is amusing, since it's pathetic beyond saving.
There's a way it could be done, and you people would certainly deserve it.
As it happens I don't want the gay-bashing theocrat in charge any more than the senile racist grapefruit. In fact I'm rather enjoying the silver lining that he's destroying the Republican party single-handedly.
And with such small hands.
Pointing out that they'll let you do it if you're a star (which is undeniably true) is not the same as doing it.
So how are we doing this accusation thing. Most to least powerful? I just want to know how long I have to wait until the world can share my painful memory of the time a hobo touched me inappropriately on a Greyhound
Because if we are stopping at, say, Carrot Top. Then I just think this whole thing is unfairly biased against the non-famous
Yes, we really need to start ruining the careers of anyone who has ever made a clumsy pass at someone at work. Only then can we start to heal.
Carrot Top?? What about Gary Busey?! And did you really think Sondra Locke was a woman??
And did you really think Sondra Locke was a woman??
She was all woman in The Gauntlet, I can tell you that much.
I was making a yoke. But thanks for the tip; I'll check it out. Everyone knows Russian trolls have fabricated all these false accusations. They're hoping Reason won't report what our boy Donnie really proposed to Boris. All these suits are poofters. Just ask Melanoma.
There are so many ridiculous has-been celebrities it's almost impossible to choose. Nick Nolte would be another good one
Danny Bonaduce
I'm kind of a big deal, but I'm not telling my story. I took being molested by creepers as a compliment, and still do. They only molested the cute ones after all.
And the stupid ones.
Some 'big deal'.
...also point of order, Past Me is lying his ass off.
Why you lying, Past Me? It just takes attention off of the real victims and makes it seem like molestation is a joke.
Stop denying my truth.
Stop lying, Past Me. I know when you're lying because I'm you.
I just want to know how long I have to wait until the world can share my painful memory of the time a hobo touched me inappropriately on a Greyhound
Sharing the pain helps.
*unzips*
ugh, you were just looking at the goat yoga picture weren't you.
You know who else unzipped a lot?
Lot's wife?
So the Louie women just sat there and let him do it?
All the women consented to Louis CK pulling out his genitals....
