Immigration Reform in the Era of Trump
How America can relight the lamp beside its golden door.
As president Trump's immigration crackdown prompts nationwide protests, Reason Foundation convened three policy experts in Washington, D.C., to discuss the moral and economic case for reform.
The experts' conclusions are startling. Left unchanged, the current immigration system is likely to prevent the president from reaching his four percent economic growth target. Further tightening of immigration regulations could provoke a recession. Foreseeable consequences of a continued crackdown against immigration include the loss of entrepreneurship, a major financial blow to American higher education, and the creation of a police state.
Panelists differed on whether Trump's so-called "Muslim ban" was motivated by incompetence or malice.

We are all on the edge of our seats looking forward to more talk on immigration. *falls asleep
No shit, I came here to say just that.
I am torn between going elsewhere and putting up with the high levels of derp that go along with other news sites' commentary or staying here for the endless gangbang train of trump immigration stories.
Could you please just assign one or two writers to this fucking topic and have the rest write about something else happening on the planet? Are you guys trying to meet the new cosmo virtue signalling quota or something?
Muslim bans are yesterday's news freakout.
I claim "first" on this too. Fist will be dethroned. I will be firsting so much, you will be tired of firsting. Believe me.
I think they'll go with both.
Yea, no bias there. "Muslim ban" without one mention of Muslim in the EO, nor are the most populous Muslim population nations mentioned either.
Think Reason will get around to mentioning the Cuban refugee ban, or is that one fine for the prog/Cosmotarians? Just kidding. That one answers itself.
Besides the comments, I'm going to start read sponsored links instead of the article...wait a minute, this is a plot to capitalize on your advertisements! *grabs more foil

I'm bonkers now, going to go grab a snickers.
[slowly pries coffee cup from bacon-magic's shaking fingers]
Shhhhh, shhhhh.
Here, try this brownie.
I like brownies! Hope it doesn't have the potz in the brownie. I don't like ingesting mj, ruins the whole eat binge thing after smoking. *will be toking after work
Matter of fact: I don't eat the sugar hardly anymore. It turns out that was my worst fatal addiction.
I find sugar the hardest addiction to quit. Even harder than...
Bacon?!
I hears ya, Chip. Took me about 90 days of really bearing down to get rid of my reflexive lunge for anything sugar-based. By contrast, quitting smoking was dead easy.
The ads do have some fetchin' gals, and clicking through on the ads offer additional viewing angles.
Further tightening of immigration regulations could provoke a recession.
These arguments aren't guided by principle, but dogma.
Yes. Unless ... Are we turning away refugees who are heavily laden with gold and other precious bounty? Otherwise, not really seeing how a few thousand able bodied military aged refugee men are going to head off a recession.
No, they arent men, they're all sweet grandmas and widows and orphans. That's how you can be sure they'll be productive members of society.
Keep beating the drum, Shikha. Keep beating it like the Energizer bunny until it becomes the drums of war. Your bile is detestable. You are everything wrong with Reason. When it all turns to blood and death, will you apologize for your drum and fife? Will you apologize for the hatred and strife? This is not unity, it is division. Trade olive branches for arrows. Only one talon stretching forth with nothing better to offer. This is not freedom you seek. How many of your fellow Americans will be free only when they are dead?
Reason boycotts reason.
So much hate is bad for the heart, brother. Seek peace within your inner core, and let it flow out through your skin.
My chakras are already open.
This is hilarious. Thank you for posting.
Oh, dear God... you weren't serious, were you?
50:50 shitposting:getting in your heads.

OMG! Noooooooo!
Foreseeable consequences of a continued crackdown against immigration include the loss of entrepreneurship
In the form of the handful of entrepeneurs who immigrate here, sure. In terms of entrepeneurship by Americans, not so much.
a major financial blow to American higher education
Given the dreadful state of the current, ossified higher ed system, not so sure this is bad.
and the creation of a police state.
Dang it! We had avoided it up til now. Actually, it might get worse, but holy shit, try living in a borderish community sometime. Effing BP everywhere. True story: We came up on an accident a couple weeks ago. One deputy there, and by the time the ambulance arrived 15 minutes later, there were six BP agents there, and not a single other law enforcement.
The experts' globalist shrills' conclusions are startling predictable.
FIFY
immigration reform is amnesty....dont be fooled!!
and for 50 million invaders!!
Hey Tim Kane, you are an example of why economists bat .500. Your argument that we need immigration to grow the economy is irrelevant. Sure, if we import ten million Chinese or ten million Nigerians, there will be an overall increase in economic activity--i.e., there will be "economic growth". But that says nothing about the impact on the individual American. Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell, and ultimately malignant.
A better way to improve the economy for everyone would be to take economists, the vast majority of whom produce nothing but confusion, and set them doing something useful, like picking strawberries.
Professor Somin wants us to believe that if there were no national borders the world would be richer and freer. He argues, disingenuously, that because one's birth in Somalia doesn't necessarily make one a bad person, there is no justification for restricting immigration. This is such obvious nonsense it's a wonder anyone takes him seriously, but I'm pretty certain he wouldn't remove the door of his house on the argument not everyone who walks down the street is a thief.
Regarding his "restriction is discrimination" howler, uh, yeah, just as he discriminates between those he permits into his house and those he doesn't. In fact, if he didn't discriminate between house guests and actually did remove the door to his house, he would be putting the occupants in grave danger. And so his advocacy poses for us Americans were we to succumb. The trustees at George Mason should be ashamed for allowing this dangerous poison--this attempt to open us to great dangers--to be fed to the young. Prof Solin is a strong supporter of Israel, however, which has a nakedly discriminatory immigration policy strongly favoring Jews. Perhaps it is significant that Prof Solin is Jewish?
Here is the fundamental fact from which all immigration policy should proceed:

An Atlantic Monthly article that shows that most economists' thinking that an increased influx of immigrants provides more jobs for Americans is FALSE and does harm jobs for US workers and the economy:

The Conscience Of A Liberal--Paul Krugman
"First, the benefits of immigration to the population already here are small."
" But as Mr. Hanson explains in his paper, reasonable calculations suggest that we're talking about very small numbers, perhaps as little as 0.1 percent of GDP.
"My second negative point is that immigration reduces the wages of domestic workers who compete with immigrants. That's just supply and demand...
"Finally, the fiscal burden of low-wage immigrants is also pretty clear. "
Also, it is patently untrue that "immigrants" are the solution to low rate of start-ups:
