The Prospects of Liberty in a Rapidly Diversifying America. (New Reason Podcast)
Nick Gillespie, Shikha Dalmia, Avik Roy, and Charles C.W. Cooke talk about immmigration, limited government, and cosmopolitanism.
In the latest Reason Podcast, Nick Gillespie moderates a lively and sometimes sharp-elbowed discussion about race, immigration, multiculturalism, and libertarianism in the coming age of Donald Trump. The participants are Shikha Dalmia of Reason, Avik Roy of The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, and Charles C.W. Cooke of National Review.
Anti-immigration conservatives and liberals have long argued that as the United States brings in more foreigners, our common culture and values slip further and further away from the nation's founding ideals of limited government and self-sufficiency. Trump supporters who cheered the candidate's plan to curtail immigration from Mexico and ban Muslims from entering the country also often stressed the we're just importing "Democratic" voters who will expand welfare. Is any of that true? And what about the shrinking-but-still-large numbers of native-born whites who had the clout to elect (if barely) the most restrictionist (and protectionist) president since at least World War II?
Government debt continues to grow and spending as a percentage of the GDP has stayed near post-WWII highs. Trump's spending plan hardly reins in such largess even as his tax plan threatens to reduce revenues (and thus raise deficits) by massive amounts. What is the effect of such policies on libertarian visions for smaller, cheaper, and less-intrusive government? Will Trump end the federal war on pot even if he's ramping up the war on immigrants? Will more protectionist economic policy be offset by more wide-open energy or education plans? We're just a few weeks away from the start of President Trump's first term and only this much is certain: It is going to be a hell of a ride.

You said it, man. I could go for a nice Cape Cod right about now.
Not going to stick around for the inevitable shitshow this comment thread will be.
How can it be a shitshow? There's no fifth column today, so people will actually listen to it. If they're listening, its hard to spew pre-emptive "COSMO"-tuperation
No transcript, no comment!
Except this one.
We have a dearth of truck drivers, it's true. Import mooooar
I got about 12 minutes in but couldn't take Dalmia. Trump the closest thing to an authoritarian America has ever had? WTF! Ever heard FDR? Lincoln? Wilson? Obama? Or Hillary? Its absolutely ridiculous. Trump was not even the most authoritarian candidate in this election! Clinton and Stein beat him on that. Trump is no libertarian but he isn't in the same league as FDR?
Dude, it's dalmia. Don't be surprised when the scorpion stings you.
Nope, I'll skip this one. It's too close to Xmas. Screw you Jacket! I'm not gonna play.
Charles C.W. Cooke of National Review.
Moar like Charles C.W. Cuck, amirite?
Good stuff. My take:
Dalmia doing Dalmia. Thank goodness Cooke went after her. His sober reasoning was an antidote after the hyperbolic lecture she delivered. I liked Avik's delivery but it felt like he was unable to make a clear point.
Re avik's story on Goldwater: He seems to say that because Barry endorsed states' rights blacks don't vote republican. First off, how many voters regardless of skin color even know who Goldwater was, much less base their party affiliation on stump speeches from the 60's?? If you sum up Avik's points and insert the party affiliation of the principles of his anecdote it goes like this: "Because a Republican stood on libertarian and constitutional principles despite the fact that state-level Democrats were passing racist anti-liberty laws against blacks, the descendants of those blacks vote Democrat." Huh??
I forget, what was immigration policy like pre-1965 Immigration Act? Despite what my lying brain is telling me, it was apparently not as restrictionist as Donald Trump. Such a thoughtful and genuine analysis from Nick. He could be the next Wolf Blitzer.
If diversity breeds friction, liberty will fall by the wayside.
ObamaCare's mandate is working == Just in time for Donald Trump and the Republicans to repeal it.

the mind of the authoritarian prog is a slight to behold. Gummit is forcing all to buy some Obamacare or pay a tax, so many are complying with this authoritarian agenda that is working but mean old Trump wants to repeal it.
Reason was too busy shrieking "Racist!" during the election campaign to actually address this issue, no matter how many times their commentariat brought it up.
Now that Trump has won and the Open Borders crowd is out of power, *now* we can actually discuss it.
"Is any of that true?"
Completely
Some Actual Facts on Hispanics it the US, immigrants and otherwise:

Hispanics Want Bigger Government Providing More Services over 3 to 1
What is Shikha's response?
Well, Whites voted for Trump, and he's Hitler, therefore they don't believe in freedom either.
"Trump got less of the minority vote than any winning president"
Not honest, though I'm hardly surprised. Spinning it to look Trump look as bad as possible.
Trump got more than Romney and McCain. Dubya did much better among Hispanics that any other Republican since Reagan. Trump is about where Bush1 and Dole were. Whites vote Republican. Blacks and Hispanics vote Democrat.
You can see the trends
"... All this shows that White America has displayed no special commitment to free markets"
No. It shows that they believe in nationalism. They believe in populism. They believe in government of, by, and for the people, not corporations, and not foreigners.
When was the last time Reason railed against corporate limited liability? When was the last time they advocated a wealth tax, instead of income and payroll taxes? When was the last time they advocated capital gains taxes be at the same rate as income/payroll taxes, and assessed yearly?
When was the last time they discussed the Lockean Proviso? Or Geolibertarianism?
Reason's "free" market is all about freedom for those who own. And special unfreedoms that benefit them as well.
Sorry, I didn't put in the link after:

PEW: Behind Trump's victory: Divisions by race, gender, education
Shikha then segues into race baiting.
Whites are for Trump's "Authoritarianism". They are for them because they benefit whites. Therefore, minorities who oppose Trump's policies are pro freedom!
Notice that she has no *data* for this claim. (While I have *data* for the contrary, above.) She simply equates opposition to Trump with being "pro freedom".
Shikha equates *populist*, *nationalist* policies with pro-white, anti-minority policies. This is a *massive* lie.
Minority *Americans* benefit more than White Americans from a policy that tilts the balance from the rich back to the people, and in particular, that puts American jobs over corporate profits and protects the bottom of the wage scale from immigrant competition.
Shikha: "A reliance on diversity was built into the US constitutional scheme"
Note the equivocation of diversity of interests and racial diversity. Bad news for this lie - diversity in the US was *legally* limited to white immigration. It's just not honest to claim that they saw racial diversity outside of European descent as desirable. They made it illegal.
Which goes back to the lies on the economic front. The US was for internal free markets, not external free markets for most of it's history. The US had large trade barriers.
The historical US had relatively closed borders to both goods and people. Like Trump.
Trump's nationalist populism is a return to the Old Right, but this time embracing minority *Americans* as well.
I missed the last guy's name. Not really too concerned, given what he had to say.
In a discussion about whether minorities support freedom, his argument is that Barry Goldwater is the Devil and Blacks really love freedom but just hate Barry Goldwater.
For everyone who also thinks that Barry Goldwater is the face of totalitarian White Supremacy, perhaps you will be convinced by this argument.
For people who think Barry Goldwater was the most Libertarian major candidate in the last half century, maybe you won't be so convinced.
Stop conflating legal immigration and illegal migration. Trump has vowed to stop only the latter. He wants skilled, educated immigrants that respect US values, the same criteria most civilized countries use for immigration.
If you're going to offer serious discussion from a diverse panel, better improve your pickup quality! English without consonants sounds like bubububu. DK why one particular speaker had this problem more than the others. In case I make myself obscure, one of the mikes wasn't getting anything above 500 hz. Ugh!
Very interesting podcast! Thanks!
