Donald Trump's Debt Denialism
Q&A with economist Veronique de Rugy
"[Donald Trump] has no plans to reduce the drivers of our future debt," says Mercatus Center Senor Fellow and Reason columnist Veronique de Rugy, "and these are Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid." While it's still too early to suss out the details of Trump's plan, the fact that he "has no plan to reform entitlements shows that he's not serious about the current situation."
De Rugy talked with Nick Gillespie about what we can expect in terms of debt and spending in the Trump Administration.

WHERE ARE MY LINKS, GILLESPIE?
Wow. That's an intense line of questioning, Snuffles.
Trump Stole Our Links!!!!!!!
FIRST!
Wait, what?
No links!?
This is what we get for those characters out there always making fun of Robby. Keep that foul tongue in your mouth please.
De Rugy is awesome and I will definitely listen to this tomorrow.
"[Donald Trump] has no plans to reduce the drivers of our future debt," says Mercatus Center Senor Fellow and Reason columnist Veronique de Rugy...
This attack is just retaliation because of his misogynistic tendencies. That was just locker room talk, Veronique.
OK, fun's over, make with the links or I'm going to find something constructive to do.
Scratch that - no more links!
NO LINKS, NO PEACE!!!
*knocks over trash can, to show we mean business*
/cheers on Brochetta.
/quietly walks over and picks up can...
*watches Private Chipperbot*
We got a scab here boys, kick his ass!
canadian?
ATTICA! ATTICA!
"[Donald Trump] has no plans to reduce the drivers of our future debt,"
Sure he does. Ever hear of the Taj Mahal? No, not that one...the other one.
Bet it all on black. There's a near 50% chance we win and then no more debt.
Always bet on black
Racist joke about last 8 years.

They're next to her dandruff flakes.

Plus, if we lose we just stamp out a couple of those Trillion Dollar coins, you know, the one with Paul Krugman's face on it, and pay our marker.
This isn't the links either. Rats! [kicks pebble]
WHERE'S MY BURRITO? WHERE'S MY BURRITO?
I have this vague feeling I am missing something in my afternoon.....
This lackadaisical P.M. links attitude is microcosm of why Libertarians don't win elections.
This reminds me of when my boss didn't show up to work so I drove to his place, climbed the facade and prepared to find a dead body. Please Reason, check on your staff! IS EVERYONE OK??
I know, right? I was mildly annoyed when I showed up to links late (but apparently not as late as the links). When another article goes up and it still isn't the links, I'm starting to worry about Robby.
Give Robby a break. It's been a slow campus news day.
Now the snowflakes actually have their winter, so no more snowflakes? Thanks Obama.
NO links still! You are punishing us for the election results. Booooooooooooooooooooooooo.
They're on Soave time.
HOW CAN YOU POST AN ARTICLE BEFORE THE LINKS?
What kind of risky-dink operation is this anyway?
And by the way, they all practice 'debt denialism.' Has anyone noticed the last 16 years?
I suppose expecting a president to actually address the debt issue is expecting him/her to take the fall for all of the previous big spenders.
I'm OUT OF HERE. You non-links-having Reason-people have RUINED my afternoon.
Good to use anytime Tony shows his face in any thread for the next four or eight years.
With any luck, he'll get sick of our badgering and go away forever. But probably not.
Trump winning sure ran Cytoxic back to his mom's basement
I wish that was the case, but honestly I haven't seen him around for at least two, maybe three months.
I'd hoped he'd come back and take his medicine. I guess if he ever does come back, it'll be long after the election buzz has died down. Typical coward move.
If I were worried that Trump had a shot at winning I would be well on my way to my bungalow in New Zealand.
Freudian slip admitting Hobbit lineage detected.
You misspelled orc.
Whoever is late in the links probably has a safety pin on his/her/xer/xim shirt.
I am pretty sure no one in Washington does. Moreover, even if he did have a plan, he can't deal with the national debt. Only Congress can do that. For all of the pants shitting that you people did over Trump, it is pretty fucking hilarious that a week after he won the election the best you people have is "he doesn't have a plan to solve the debt".
And it is nice to hear from the political geniuses that are Gillespie and DeRugy. Trump wins the election based on support of the middle class on the basis of the economy, taxes and the regulatory state and their brilliant idea is for his first act as President to be cutting those very same people's entitlements. Yeah, that would work out great. That is some top flight thinking there.
And if dealing with entitlements and the debt is the most important thing in the world, why didn't reason act like it during the campaign? I am not saying reason hasn't been concerned about the debt. They certainly have. But it was hardly their most pressing concern during the campaign. And now suddenly Trump must have a plan today or he is not serious?
i guess "Trump wont' deal with the debt" were the transition journolist talking points.
Really, John? They're supposed to say "YAY TRUMP! HE'S GOING TO BE THE BESTEST PRESIDENT EVER!"
The debt is going to continue to expand greatly under Trump. That's a fucking problem.
No. I am saying they need to come up with better than this. Six months of pants shitting over Trump and the best they got is "he doesn't have a plan for the debt?" You have to be fucking kidding me. It is pathetic.
Yeah. I typed out a comment about this and said screw it. The time for policy discussion may have been before the damn election instead of 50 articles a day about what a dick he is with a goofy picture of him.
Burn cream! Get your burn cream!
Reason wrote multiple article during the campaign bemoaning the fact that the debt was not talked about much. The reason it didn't get talked about more is because it was largely ignored by both candidates.
And almost entirely ignored by Reason for years. But now it'll be fashionable again when we're not talking about how wonderful the UBI is.
". . . and their brilliant idea is for his first act as President to be cutting those very same people's entitlements."
Exactly. 10,000 people turn 65 every day, the average SS monthly payment is ~$1348. Some get rich at other people's expense scheme, eh?!
Liberterians are advocating . . .?
This no PM links thing has me feeling like a Hillary Supporter after the election.
5/17/16....11/15/16
move the five, carry the one...
ITS A LINKS CONSPIRACY
ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED
Huh. Do you have a newsletter I can subscribe to?
Here you go: *hands bacon the internet*
Doesn't Congress control fiscal policy?
That depends on who I want to blame when things don't work properly. Or to whom I wish to give credit when they do.
No, Robby, you can't catch out FoE! Just admit the defeat and up those links!
Unless you expected Suderman to do them. The man is till in mourning!
Seriously, where is Mr. McArdle?
probably stage 4.
I'd hate to think he's still on 1.
Barack Obama: technology, social media, and "constant information" are to blame for the rise of global Trumpian populism.
Wait, WHAT???
All that information just confuses people.
This reminds me of the common environmentalist lament against "unnecessary economic expansion".
That's just another way for Obama to lament his single fault. If only he were better at getting his message out!
What are you all carping about? There were several links in that story.
Unfortunately, only 1.5 candidates was concerned with entitlement spending, only one of them received a nomination from a political party, and he didn't win any electoral votes.
Might as well vote for the incompetent racist cantaloupe then...
As opposed to the criminal, smug, self-centered, racist that wear's pantsuits right?
Have the tears dried on your Hillary pillow yet? Are you still in the feeble position hugging your knees?
RE: Donald Trump's Debt Denialism
'' While it's still too early to suss out the details of Trump's plan, the fact that he "has no plan to reform entitlements shows that he's not serious about the current situation."
Maybe Trump the Grump will understand the gravity of the entitlements of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid when these programs bankrupt the country.
So the Democrats can find a lot of common ground with Trump.
You know what the single biggest driver of debt is?
Lack of real economic growth.
Let's try to fix that, then worry about what to do with the revenue.
"You know what the single biggest driver of debt is?"
Buying shit on credit.
The 20th century was one big bubble.
Hey, if there are ways to create economic growth while also reducing spending, say for example, taking a large chunk out of the regulatory state, I'm all for it.
