'Your Tears Are Delicious and Your Parties Will Die,' says Libertarian Party Chair Nicholas Sarwark
Sarwark sat down with Reason's Matt Welch to discuss the post-election fallout and the future of the LP.
"Stop wasting your breath. Start working on your own parties. Start working on your own issues," says Libertarian Party national chair Nicholas Sarwark, responding to criticism that Libertarians played a spoiler role and handed Donald Trump the election. "See if you can take my votes in the actual arena of ideas instead of trying to shame me."
Sarwark sat down with Reason's Matt Welch the morning after the election to discuss the performance of the Libertarian presidential ticket this year, which drew about 3.7 million votes, or slightly less than 4 percent of the national popular vote. He also spoke about the future of the Republican Party and directly addressed Democrats complaining that third parties "spoiled" the election for Donald Trump.

This man wins the election.
Well, okay, maybe he gets second place to SugarFree's fanfics.
I Make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $70h to $86h?Go this website and click tech tab to start your work? Visit this web? http://www.Trends88.Com
No he doesn't, but thanks for drinking the Kool-Aid!
I like this Nicholas Sarwark guy.
Yup. Good head on his shoulders and has good responses to the questions asked.
Except for how he allowed double digit polling for Johnson to waste away to 3%.
Yup. Good head on his shoulders!
Nicholas for President! He speaks for me!
Why didn't the L party nominate this guy?
He'd be great in a presidential debate. He seems maybe a bit too straightforward though for people who are used to trigger warnings and safe spaces.
Man had balls to go into H&R comment threads. Milksops at CNN and MSNBC hold no fear for him!
That does not seem to be a negative today.
He could easily take Reince Preibus but Donna Brazile - I'm not so sure. I think she'd eat him first.
Paloma me suena como Winston Smith in 1984: "One of these days, thought Winston with sudden deep conviction, Syme will be vaporized. He is too intelligent. He sees too clearly and speaks too plainly. The Party does not like such people." This isn't THAT kind of party. There isn't a damn thing the looters can do about Nicholas except whine, snivel, and whisper behind his back...
Vade retro schadenfreude!
Because Nick is an idiot, and I've told him so many times.
Which Nick is this cheerful bloke going on about?
Sarwark is pretty good. Hopefully will help to improve the quality of LP candidates moving forward.
This is the guy who helped completely blow it this year. Next time we need a LP chairman with some balls, maybe help persuade the nominee not to pick unsound and counter-platform running mates.
How about a competent chairman that can actually work to strengthen a ticket? Instead of this clown just sitting by, apparently jerking off with one hand, while picking his nose with the other.
He can talk a good game, but push come to shove this guy's a wimp.
Yeah really blew it with that record vote total more than 3 times better than the next best.
Fuck you Crusty and you stupid 3%. What happened to the double digit polling from the summer? Historical lower approval ratings for both R and D candidates, golden opportunity. In fact the LP was polling better before Johnson was picked, and even with a totally clear libertarian field he managed to almost completely squander what had been achieved.
Johnson ran a shit campaign with the LP. Maybe next time a chairman with balls that can actually horse trade a bit with the nom over VP picks?
Even fucking Trump had to pick a rank and file R as a running mate. What the fuck was the LP thinking? Johnson even failed to bother unifying his own party support, before picking a democrat cross dressing as a republican, and before they both repeatedly threw their support behind Hillary.
Not only was the LP under Sarwark extremely foolish, but completely tone deaf to the overall trends in the electorate. How do you even get your message out when you're barking up the wrong tree. Fuck this rudderless prick and Johnson.
Where's Austin Petersen? Give him the chairman job. Let's get someone ambitious and serious about the platform, whose not going to happy with meager scraps time and time again.
K.
Ok. I still think Milton Friedman circa 1976 would have struggled to get 5% in a general election.
Or in today's LP!
Friedman's not a true libertarian.
First things first, what sort of Cosmo-Cuckitarian has a PhD?
Let alone in a non-stem field?
Oh.
Could've fooled me! I'm glad we have these anonymous sockpuppet kibitzers to set me straight!
Really? I suggest you read his 1990's articles.
And yet, the party nominated Weld as VP . . . .
The double digit polls were always a fantasy - when people get to the poll they end up picking the lesser of two evils because OMG YOU CAN'T LET X WIN. It will always be a headwind to 3rd parties. I hope Sarwark can continue to grow the party though, and that needs to be done at the local and state level as much as it does at the national level.
Agree. 3rd parties are always gonna have the post-Labor Day headwind. Stopping the leakage requires local/neighborhood organizing (canvassing, yard signs, meet-n-greets, booths, etc) because that is the only thing that can counter the top-down ads/polls/media/debate blitz that corrals all the voters who are getting their voting info while sitting on their couch.
Libertarians merely need to prove that they have a face and exist in real life in the autumn to get a slew of those voters who like libertarian ideas in theory/polls in the election summer.
"Ideas and theories" are totally useless, as proven in this election. The vast majority of Americans DO NOT hate government (gasp) even the large percentage who distrust government.
80% of what government provides is what people want to see done. So all we have to do is SHOW a better way to do it (which would mostly be by individuals, as it was until mostly the 30s). Ideas and theories ( slogans and soundbites) merely show the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of what Reason calls Libertarianism 3.0.
We're so goddamn perfects, but have no clue how to do ANYTHING better, not even the insanity of Medicare, where vouchers would increase competition ... in the wrong market, insurance. So they wind up adding a costly middleman between the government and seniors ... which SOUNDS like privatizations to libertarian goobers ... as everyone else wonders WTF Cato is talking about.
If today's libertarians have no clue how and why free markets would do better ... and how to get there .... then we have nothing to offer (literally).
So howcum The First Lady let a 4-to-1 lead in international betting odds wither away into her ass on a platter? Every vote that legalized weed in, what? NINE states could have padded her purse... but nooooo! Commie Global Warming data fraud is important; cops shooting kids over reefers and asset-forfeiture crashes don't matter.
He's just a chairman. He can't arm twist all the delegates into doing what you demand. Weld won fair and square. Thems the breaks unless you want to be like the Democrats and rig the thing. Look how that worked out for them.
Yep. Also, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
He's just a chairman. He can't arm twist all the delegates into doing what you demand. Weld won fair and square. Thems the breaks unless you want to be like the Democrats and rig the thing. Look how that worked out for them.
Austin is a Republican antiabortion bullier... He's way better than most of God's Own Prohibitionists and the pigs should snap him up before he gets a better offer from the Tea-klux or Klanstititshun party. He's gutsier than Randal and Randal's daddy put together.
Yes, he should have manufactured better candidates out of thin air using only Lockian philosophy and Randian magic!
A wimp indeed.
Democrats are not the only whiners, oh no they aren't.
Why would he need to manufacture when John Fuckin' McAfee still walks this Earth?
^THIS^
A stronger libertarian is not necessarily a stronger candidate. If Johnson didn't stick his tongue out at a reporter like a weirdo, and Weld pretended he didn't like the attention as much, they could have gotten to five percent, but the fact they had a chance to get to five percent was only because of their names.
It's not like a strong libertarian was going to suddenly inspire a nation consumed by two statist fools.
Unless you were being flippant, and then fuck you for making me respond.
McAfee not only was "stronger" ideologically, but he was more charismatic. To be fair, a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios would have been more charismatic, but the point remains.
Honestly, compare anything that came out of the McAfee camp to the pablum that came from the Johnson campaign.
McAfee was not only stronger ideologically, but he was more charismatic. To be fair, a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios was more charismatic than Johnson.
I agree with that, but Johnson and Weld received a lot of the media coverage they did because of their name recognition, and the fact that they are considered respectable. I think McAfee would have been an easily dismissed nut.
Also, Johnson and Weld had a better chance to draw votes away from the two major parties. It's not like pure libertarians were suddenly going to vote in large numbers for people they considered to be impure. Johnson and Weld had an opportunity to grow the LP, which was probably a main goal for the LP.
McAfee had the same name recognition. Who hasn't hand the headache of removing that red shield with an M on it from our taskbar? And we've seen where 'respectability' gets you in this era.
Respectability got them to the point where GJ said the word "Aleppo" and then was laughed out of the room. McAfee probably gets laughed out of the room months earlier.
You know who doesn't get my vote? Avira. Those Krauts still think "Luke Filewalker" is funny. It's not, Germans, it's not.
You're judging McAfee on hypothetical goofs and gaffs that he never had a chance to make. Quite frankly, I think McAfee is not only at least one standard deviation more intelligent than Johnson, but would have been 100x more media savvy. Look at how he was able to spin his net worth shrinking from 100 million to 10 million in the wake of 2008. He came out looking like a Gandhi-equse enlightened being as opposed to a schmuck who made a series of bad investments.
Yeah, and fuck Avira.
You're judging McAfee on hypothetical goofs and gaffs that he never had a chance to make.
No. I don't think McAfee would have ever been taken seriously enough to warrant attention from the mainstream media, and unfortunately they drive poll numbers.
I think Johnson polled high at first because of his name and perceived respectability. I think McAfee stays at like 1%, maybe gets an interview here and there on cable news and that's it. Johnson at least had the opportunity.
To be clear HM I don't dispute anything you have written, it's just that I don't think McAfee would have received enough attention to make a difference. Whatever happened in Belize killed* his shot** at a career in politics.
*Ha!
**Ha again!
McAfee handled questions about Belize quite well during the LP debates, and a story about being extorted by a corrupt government might have gone over well with voters in the current political climate.
He also had the balls to say (to a libertarian audience) that Social Security must be honored for those who've paid into it. That stance would've helped him in the general election and blunted the strongest mainstream criticism of a libertarian ticket.
/speculation and soothsaying?
Weld is not a true libertarian. He is an attention-seeking ghoul.
Weld is not a true libertarian. He is an attention-seeking ghoul.
And fuck the squirrels for eating up my last comment.
McAfee was not only stronger ideologically, but he was more charismatic. To be fair, a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios was more charismatic than Johnson.
Seriously, compare anything that came out of the McAfee camp to the pablum vomited up by Johnson.
God...fuck the squirrels
Only the thicc ones, right? Links are appreciated. Girls not squirrels.
They have evolved. Instead of eating comments or multiposting them they are delaying the post, making you double post.
You nailed it. Of the available candidates Johnson was the best option. Not perfect by any means. If he had just realized a few things about running a presidential campaign the 5%, and more, would have been easy pickings. As Weld liked to say, "It's easy", but they made it so difficult.
Do you not think that McAfee may have more skeletons in his closet than even Trump for the media to trot out endlessly?
McAfee fits the description of a libertine pretty well, far better than he fits the description of a libertarian. Visceral disgust is easy to marshal, and the left knows how to wield it. That's OK if you're a major party candidate like old slick Willy or Trump, but it's not going to fly for a third party at all.
Perhaps. Would he have handled them better than Trump? I'm certain of it.
Well, now we'll never know.
We'll never know but I'm quite certain I couldn't have convinced life long Republicans like my parents and grand-parents to split their ticket and vote for McAfee like they did for Johnson.
No offense to your folks, but we needed the disaffected among Gens X and Y more than them.
True dat, but I'd bet long odds against Mcafee hypothetically getting maybe surmisable imaginare jack he failed to get when he had the chance. I like the guy, but he is a clueless noob and, by the looks of it, a whining flouncer-out.
They humored you, and then went out and voted to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN
He'd have got less than 1% of the vote -- which is all he speaks for.
I would have loved to see mcafee debate Hilary, but he might be too much of a gangsta for most of the public.
I have yet to see a whinier butthurt sissy than McAfee: "Y'all're racists for not choosing me!"
What's he gonna do, veto the primary voters and put his own favorites on the ticket?
If you are looking for a Chair who rigs the nomination to his or her preferences, you might be more comfortable in the Republican or Democratic parties.
In the Libertarian Party, we let the delegates decide on the nominees.
If you're looking for a Chair who rigs the nomination to fit his or her personal preferences, you may have more luck finding one in the Republican or Democratic parties.
In the Libertarian Party we let the delegates decide in a contested convention.
The squirrels demand the right to vote twice.
Well said!
A little achy breaky heart is just as sustaining.

BREAKING: Alaskan market on blubber has taken a tumble as proggies discover means of producing it reliably.
Libertarian, not cosmotarians, would totally vote for Clinton if it weren't for that nasty Johnson guy.
This election has been my political "coming out of the closet". After thirty years of being a Republican this year, after subscribing to Reason Magazine and some real political soul searching I came to realize that the Republican Party no longer represented (if it ever did) what I believe in and I would not vote for someone I consider repugnant simply because they carried the Republican brand. In fact I don't believe in the wake of this election either the Republicans or the Democrats know who they really are. I'm tired of the politics of "Us v. Them" and in it's stead I want politics based on ideas and principles. Anyone who can not, or will not, attempt to persuade me that their ideas comport with my principles (like the Republicans or Democrats) can not have my vote. I will not vote for someone simply because they are "not him" or "not her". I hope I am one of a growing number of people that have come to this realization and adopt this position.
For the first time in twenty years I don't feel like I have to justify my vote because my vote was based on the principles of individual freedom and less governmental interference in the lives of citizens. I don't feel the need to explain my choice to people who cast their vote for someone because they believe that candidate will "stop the other guys from screwing me over". Instead I've been challenging them to justify their vote for the politics of divisiveness to me.
I'm a Libertarian and I'm proud of it.
cool story, bro
Just ignore the stopped clock, Crowster. He's just a whiny little cunt.
I'm a libertarian and I'm not proud of my party.
Why should I be when they repetedly failed at winning any elections, and also failed to meet any of their stated consolation goals? No ballot access, no matching funds, dismal vote turnout.
Another failed endeavor, replace leadership.
K
No ballot access?
WTF you talking about?
We got or retained ballot access in almost all of the states we needed it in, including retaining in Texas and Oklahoma, which will probably save the party ~$350K next election cycle.
I don't mind if you want to spend your time whining on the Internet, but at least try to get your facts right.
I had the pleasure of voting for 3 Libertarians here in Wisconsin: Gary Johnson, Phil Anderson, and Jason Lebeck.
And I had the pleasure of voting for several in New Hampshire. Abramson's run for Governor earned 4.3% which makes LP an official party. So instead of Dem/Rep or "unaffiliated, I can now register as Libertarian.
And of course, MANY legislators in NH were elected that are actually libertarians disguised as GOP or Dems. Most reps run without even advertising their political affiliation.
Oh. You retained ballot access in States for races that Libertarians can't win?
Kudos!
If Gary had a vote for every whining ku-klux republican disingenuously pretending to be a libertarian, he'd be President of These United States come January! Lend me your tears!
Nick is an idiot, and I've told him so many times.
He needs to go!
Another noob mystified by spoiler vote math. It took me 27 years to understand what Milton Friedman was suggesting and David Nolan acted on: SPOILER VOTES CHANGE LAWS, COURT RULINGS, CONSTITUTIONS! We don' need no steenkin office holders, but take what we can get to make the looters drool with envy and the desire to throttle their platform committees.
...now you're getting it
Join people in every country who have at http://www.libertarian-international.org
Welcome! I vowed that I would never vote on "Us v. Them" terms after holding my nose for Romney 4 years ago. As I'm sure you've discovered, it's quite a freeing feeling to not have to hold your nose and vote for a sucky candidate.
Don't you get it?
Libertarians can't survive without the "us versus them."
Libertarians never expect to win, but always want to be the "spoiler party."
Even when this isn't the case, megalomaniacs like Nick Sarwark can't resist saying stupid things like he did here, just to draw attention to himself.
Libertarians exist because of collectivists versus freedom. Everyone else either defects to the looters or surrenders.
Congrats! I'm a relatively new convert from the right too, having been rather unimpressed with Johnson's Republican primary exploits in 2012 but having my eyes opened enough by Ron Paul's debate performances that I eventually found Romney unacceptable and started following the libertarian campaign.
(Note: I didn't actually vote for Gary Johnson in 2012 because I was registered in Oklahoma and literally was not allowed to.)
You can redeem yourself by sending them some money. I survived Oklahoma awhile, but escaped.
Butthurt Derp:
F**k Gary Johnson
Our fury will need to widen far past one bumbling, athleisure-clad narcissist and his delirious left-wing counterpart in order to lodge a productive resistance. Gary Johnson knew?he had to know, right??that he was never going to be president. But he went ahead and positioned himself as the only rational choice in a contest against two equally repugnant monsters, a tremendous lie that a significant swath of the country came to believe
The comments are gold: "And you didn't even get your fucking 5%, you assholes. You ruined it for everyone and you did it for nothing.
Purity, since you're visiting those sites, you can tell all of those commenters to bring that shit over here.
never created an acct in progland to engage their version of a commentariat. I like the relatively pure pool here and offer up derp at a distance for amusement
PurityDiluting "like[s] the relatively pure pool"?
Something doesn't compute.
It would be purer if I wasn't posting my piss here. Why self-awareness is a rare trait is a mystery to me.
"Gary Johnson, a Libertarian nominee so baldly ill-equipped to win the presidency that his own VP Bill Weld semi-openly supported Clinton,"
Hillary Clinton, a Democrat so baldly ill-equipped to win the presidency that she fails even with the support of two VP nominees.
And her entire party machine which actively sabotaged her competitors during the primary.
Hillary is so awful that she couldn't even ride on the coattails of a relatively popular incumbent president who campaigned on her behalf.
But I'm guessing the reason we "weren't with her" is because we're all sexist.
Pretty much. We all would have converted to socialism long ago if it weren't for our hang ups about Rosa Luxemburg being a dame and Marx a Jew.
Add to that a "former" cigar-sucking prez who "didn't inhale" or repeal pot laws.
Ursula the Sea Witch Hillary Clinton, a Democrat so baldly ill-equipped to win the presidency that she lost to Donald Trump.
Hahahahaha. I didn't need her hate to vote for Johnson, but I'll take it.
F**k Gary Johnson
I'm sorry, what part of tears, delicious, etc. did you not understand?
Those pinko delinquents can fuck off straight to Hell. Their progressive darling rightly lost the election. The only thing that's been ruined is their Che-themed mutually masturbatory self-congratulation parties.
My favorite is the claim they should've done something to ban 3rd parties when they had the chance.
The tears are delicious
Gary needed a platform ... actual policy proposals .,.. but that's treason among today's crop of libertarians.
Blame Gary for running a campaign based on what the anti-government purists demand, which is nothing of substance, just principles and ideas, aka slogans and soundbites, othing at all for the 60+% of Americans who are real libertarians,
This election was a TOTAL rejection of today's pseudo-libertarianism. All Gary needed was 2-3 actual policies, like on jobs/economy, healthcare and governance. But that would have required shitting all over BOTH liberals and conservatives, like Trump did, but with actual solutions. But attacking conservatism, even with all its massive failures, is a no-no in Libertarianism 3.0 (MAYBE 2% of Americans).
This exactly. I kept yelling at him when he was on television: SAY SOMETHING!
That being said, "Your tears are delicious and your parties will die" would make a great slogan for the next Libertarian presidential run, and I for one need it on a T-shirt in the meantime.
Anyone who believes that 4 million votes means the two major parties are dead must be high on drugs. At best.
We have changed a trainload of laws, just as Milton Friedman predicted/suggested in Free To Choose...
Matt, you look as orange as Donald Trump... is it the lighting?
Sure, it could be the lighting, but it could also be that as part of an effort to be more like Kmele Matt has decided to tan, and tan a lot.
So... you don't think it has ANYTHING to do with our new Dear Leader?
He's a cuck that nearly stole the election for Trump. His only hope is to pass as one of them now.
If everyone's orange, no one's orange.
Its funny cuz its true!
Have we been playing yummy tear pron today?
https://youtu.be/AtaaMgFVYpg
My cup runneth over.
Do you suppose they'll be falling all over each other to praise how she looks in an orange jumpsuit as opposed to a white pantsuit?
One can only hope that the rule of law actually still does mean something, but I doubt it. Trump will probably pardon her as a gesture of faux magnanimity.
She should have been in prison years ago. It's not going to happen now
If Hilary got sent to prison some would treat her like Mandela -- it would be awful. Best case scenario she fades away and is forgotten.
What difference, at this point, does it make?
Crensaw Pete knows what's up.
Would you explain the meaning of that statement, plz?
Asking....for a friend.
Ah.
Thanks, for what it's worth.
Hmm, I like his analysis @5:50.
Bartender, i would like to buy that man a drink.
Many people did that the night before. For myself and Matt. You may have noticed.
Tonight, if you find yourself in the beltway, it may be wise to pass on any drinks offered, as I suspect the Irvine concentration would be unusually high. Progressives aren't known to be gracious losers.
Deserved. I owe you one.
Make that two drinks...
I am enjoying this.
Walsh is still drunk in this video
He's always drunk. That's why we like him.
not true. he's normally sober, well-groomed and articulate. He only falls short on the first here.
i'm just saying his squintiness in this is maybe 50% being sleepless, and 50% being still quasi-cocked due to the alcohol-required to make the shock of last nights results more humorous.
I still applaud the efforts made by the Reason staff to attempt to churn stuff out today. I personally only made it through a morning of work before i abandoned ship and went back to drinkin'.
Nobody knew you drank until you showed up for work sober?
/joke
He looks like he is going to stick his face into a bucket. Lovely.
I also really appreciate Nicholas' long-view here.
Its something entirely lacking from the news-media. Where are we going as a country? this guy looks at the status quo and says, "start making things better". Its smart. and its a good investment.
It's common-sense politics control.
Oh...you mean the 200 year long view when we're all dead?
Thanks for drinking Nick's Kool-Aid!
The Party is already 45 years old, and hasn't achieved SH_T!
45 years, and just 3 percent of support for a Presidential race?
You need more Kool-Aid!
Nine more states repeal and stop Tea-party cops from shooting kids in the back over hemp.
--Officer! Kelly over there is high on meth and packing, I'll testify it was self defense as always...
Did this guy learn how to talk from the H&R commentariat? Good stuff, maybe we have a winner here.
Can you imagine a moral, plainspoken judge of this sort ruling on a Second Amendment case? After weeks of legalese horseshit, the judge reenters the courtroom, takes his seat, and his ruling is -
"A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Restrictions nullified without qualification, and with prejudice."
/Pipe dream.
So will progs stop screaming BOOOOOSHH now that THE WORST POSSIBLE MOST NOT OKAY THING EVER has just happened? I've heard some say "2000 and 2004 were bad*, but this is a whole other level."
*problematic, probably
yep, the proggies will be replacing their worn-out bush voodoo doll with a fresh orange trump one
Great interview. Can't help but like the guy. It's an uphill battle just to get your candidates on the ballot, much less get votes. Still, I would have thought a better candidate could have had more success this year if any year considering the competition.
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression Sarwalk didn't recruit Johnson or Weld.
I was refering to his comment about how great the candidates were not that he had control over it.
OK
"Best ticket we ever had"
well... its basically saying "the proof is in the numbers"... as well as admitting that they previous people you had run were a bunch of dogshit morons.
What the LP needs are some grassroots candidates who aren't just dropouts from the major party structures.
Well this is the biggest turd the LP has ever shat, but still a turd as far as results go.
Fucking Jill Stein almost caught up to the LP, that's because we're not even playing in the minor leagues, this is only T-ball.
Gary Johnson, Bill Weld and Nicholas Sarwark all need to be set adrift. They are poison for Libertarians.
Getting beat head to head in every state and getting only a third of the votes is not "almost caught up to the LP"
Nick is an idiot, and I've told him so many times.
He has to go!
After yew, alphonse.
This Kelly sockpuppet has a bad link or fake URL.
Nicholas, your words... They're like a refreshing Spring rain.
More, please.
here here! props to Nick!
I think there's also a speech from last night and a lengthy Facebook Live with Welch.
I'll admit, I am surprised at how funny I find this outcome. I knew the hysterics would be good, and I'm not looking forward to January on, but right now I'm on cloud nine. For the past 18 hours, I burst out laughing at random times.
It's all so surreal and absurd.
Ditto. I woke up this morning to my wife watching the television, and she turned and told me the Donald won. I burst out laughing like a loon.
It's just so surreal. I finally feel like this electorate, this entire misbegotten, rotten, garbage system got what was coming to it. We're going to be run by a reality TV show clown for the next four years, and the lulz will be glorious.
As someone who flirts with discordianism, I'm ecstatic.
yes.
its not about Trump.
Its about the Top-Down "HERE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD THINK" media-industry being completely rejected.
this is the third time i've quoted it, but he's fucking right =
Is that what Jon Oliver and Lena Dunham are saying? Maybe you haven't watched their shows.
Lena Dunham pretty much straight up endorsed the extinction of straight white makes (~30% of the population). So yeah, it really is pretty bad over there.
Lena who? I've never watched the limey's show. But brain damage from teevee explains how a national socialist gets so addled he mistakes this gathering for a looterfest.
He's right. All the beltway, all the media, all the celebrities, all the snobs in California, New York, and Seattle, all of them are acting like they just got punched in their collective balls. They have literally no idea how to process what has happened, no frame of reference to filter through, except for, "Everyone except for people like me are bigots. I don't want to live in a world where Ru Paul is asked to use a different bathroom, which is exactly the same thing as being gassed in Auschwitz."
this should - in theory - be a giant wake-up call to the media world that they've spent way too much time, money, and resources pandering to a vocal social-media-minority.
i think some of them will start to get it. But not before everyone who currently runs CNN is fired.
Most of us are marveling at how incredibly stupid people in this country are. Personally this election doesn't really affect me, but when people start coming home in bodybagd from whatever war this unhinged rapist gets us involved in can I just scoff when someone says they died for my freedom to scoff at their sacrifice?
but when people start coming home in bodybagd from whatever war this unhinged rapist gets us involved in can I just scoff when someone says they died for my freedom to scoff at their sacrifice?
Hillary Clinton wanted to shoot down Russian jets in Syria. But enjoy your delusions of anti-war credibility.
I didn't vote for her so maybe you should talk with a KKKlinton supporter.
So, is it worse to die for an unhinged rapist, or for an unhinged murderer?
Speaking of unhinged:
Paging Bob...
Just pointing out that I think you're an idiot if you join the armed forces to defend this banana republic. That's all. Sorry, I get a little emotional when people die for bullshit. I my defense, I'm not voting for Trump because Lena Dunham said something bad about me to her Twitter friends. That's on you.
eh. You maybe correct. I don't like using the military for a jobs program, or for policing the world. That said, plenty of intelligent people have served, and, as long as I'm not forced to do hero worship, I'm not gonna get worked up.
Same here. As to what's on whom, I'm betting you're much more "covered" than I am.
"and, as long as I'm not forced to do hero worship, I'm not gonna get worked up."
On a scale of 1 to 10-- 1 being no irritation and 10 being a speech by Barack Obama-- how do you rate your level of irritation when...
1.) Lena Dunham talks shit about boys to her girlfriends on "Girls'"
2.) some politician lies about a war and then talks about how a 19 year old sacrificed his two legs from an IED for liberty
I'm trying to wrap my head around the motivations behind inchoate rage,
Both are vexing, and I give both a 9.5
Why are droning on and on about Dungham and rage? Seriously, you are bouncing around. Almost as if moving the goalposts is more important than actual understanding...
Lena Dunham publicly supporting killing all white males isn't what I would call typical innocuous girl talk.
Defend? All the National Socialists ever do is attack people!
We just avoided electing a war monger who had policy ideas that promoted instigating what could be a no shit shooting war with Russia and you're worried about Donald getting us into wars. What evidence do you have that he is hawkish at all with regard to foreign intervention?
I reiterate... I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HER SO YOU'LL GET NO ARGUMENT FROM ME. I DIDN'T VOTE FOR TRUMP WHO WANTS TO BOMB THE CRAP OUT OF MOOOSLIMS EITHER!
You must have went to bed early, Hilary didn't win as expected, Donald Trump did.
Less babble.and more about things you have expertise in, like being racist against Chinamen and The Blacks pls. Kthx
"Most of us are marveling at how incredibly stupid people in this country are."
Which is going to lead you to renounce your communitarian views and reduce the scope of government so you aren't under the tyranny of this stupid majority?
See that's what I've never understood. How can you be a communitarian elitist. For people who have such contempt for the majority, you'd think they'd want to be left alone. But no, you need all those idiots because you apparently get your meaning in life from the idea of leading all of us morons into the light of socialism whether we like it or not.
john oliver, samantha bee, bill maher and the view will be getting a bump in ratings as people outside their regular audience stop by to taste their tears
I've had a serious case of the giggles all day. Took the day off in case I needed to drink away the misery of a Clinton presidency, and it turns out it's more like Christmas Day, with Facebook being the gift that just keeps on giving. So many Prog tears, so many news anchors losing their minds. I know there's gonna be a hangover later, but god damn this is the happiest I've been about politics in this country in a long, long time.
Holy shit I've had the exact same experience, literally just as you described.
Holy shit I've had the exact same experience, just as you described. Feeling giddy and laughing to myself.
I'm enjoying it surprisingly much as well. I couldn't stand Trump during the primary. I didn't at any point during the general campaign find myself interested in his ideas. But now, now that he's surrounded by a cloak of leftist tears, I'm sure glad we didn't just go with another Bush.
I wasn't pleased because of the asset-forfeiture crash and faith-based depression the last mystical bigot caused--like his daddy before him and Herbert Hoover before either one of them. But the Dems became a liability after gorging on Econazi planks when Green spoiler votes cost them the pelf, boodle and hand in the till. How's that Glowball Warming carbon looting and marijuana prohibition working for them Dems right about now?
Someone promote this man!
Chairman is the highest office within the Libertarian Party.
Really? I would've sworn the rank of Sith Lord was higher.
Okay then. I move we nominate Nicholas for "honorary" Jedi Master as a bonus.
How did the 2016 voters respond to the Libertarian "arena of ideas?"
Nobody was even paying attention to Gary Johnson, or Nick's post fight mumbo jumbo!
Just 3% of the vote in a Presidential Election after 45 years of trying.
If the Libertarian Party was looking for money on Shark Tank, Mr. Wonderful would say:
"You're not a political party...you're a hobby."
He would then say:
"You're dead to me!"
Hey guys,
I want to ask you when is it to early to ask what Donald Trump has done for the white college dropout that helped elect him to office. Is 11February2017 too early you think? Glenn Beck was asking around 28January2009 whether Barack Obama had turned the executive branch over to the Weathermen. Should I use him for inspiration? Thanks for any advice,
??? One person?
Oh, and since you are preemptively thanking us, go fuck yourself.
Sorry... "thanks, beforehand" Trumpkin.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You'll have to do better than that, proto-commie.
Things are going to get so much better now that we'll have DT and the Republicans to fuck up 6+ years of private sector job growth.
Fucking up private sector job growth? Why, you, of all people, should be pleased as punch, then!
You mean they have a shot at undoing the worst economic recovery ever? The chance they have of repealing and replacing Obamacare makes me pretty giddy. Sorry/not sorry you won't be getting your commie paradise, AmSock.
Dude, repealing Obamacare would be the best thing that ever happened to the idea of state-run single payer in California. So, fine by me.
Yeah and good luck on the state of CA being able to afford that insurance graft bullshit on their own.
The state budget is so fucked, that it's already doomed anything state progs have rubber stamped in the last decade. So go nuts.
Sock is confused. This isn't a stop on the Republican parade route.
Also why does socialist like Obama? Also market/job growth is not a socialist economic concern. Are there even any mechanisms for growth in socialist economic theory?
Sure, set growth targets in the 5 year plan, shoot those who don't meet the targets.
+ 1 million pairs of baby shoes
Also why does socialist like Obama? Also market/job growth is not a socialist economic concern. Are there even any mechanisms for growth in socialist economic theory?
Are you expecting intellectual consistency here?
He's a socialist who decries populism. I'm not exactly sure what group of people he thinks need to exercise control of the means of production, but they apparently don't exist yet.
to fuck up 6+ years of private sector job growth.
American socialist.
Did you even read the bloody manual?
Jesus F'ing Christ. Does anyone here know the difference between a Welfare state economy and a communist one? The first one actually works and generates economic growth comparable to economies run by pop-Austrians wielding Hayek.
Of course I know the difference between welfare state socialism and Marxist socialism; but I don't go around apologizing for Marxist regimes like you do, so it's readily apparent that I appreciate the distinction.
But that distinction is immaterial to the point I made. Whether it's a social welfare state or a communist worker's paradise you're supposedly promoting, you have sneering condescension for the poor and working class whose interests you allegedly care about.
How does a welfare state economy yield growth?
Well, it would have to be the poor saps who actually punch a clock, or come up with new and exciting technology. But they don't count because someone somewhere needs someone else to take care of them, so why not highlight that when describing your economy.
How does a welfare state economy yield growth?
The two usual talking points I see are:
1. By "freeing" people from concerns like having the means to obtain food, shelter, transportation, healthcare, etc. as needed, the welfare state enables them to pursue new ideas and business interests that would be infeasible otherwise.
2. By driving spending into "investment" (which somehow does not include savings or the stock market) and away from "income" (which apparently goes straight into Scrooge McDuck's vault), the economy is encouraged to grow.
Both of these ideas have the faintest of merit. The former is based on the (valid) notion that leisure time is a necessary (not sufficient!) condition for innovation; the latter is based on the (again, valid) notion that capital appreciation is a stronger foundation for economic growth than raw consumption (yet they fetishize GDP).
The problem is that these ideas reflect only the most facile understanding of economics, whereupon money can be diverted from one purpose to another with no opportunity cost, or the removal of quality of life as an incentive won't lead to the vast majority of people lounging around instead of innovating. Not to mention that state violence (whether explicit or implict) is needed to carry out these ends. Taxes are enforced by guns, but I guess it's okay to point guns at people you don't like. That, we are told, is sound economic policy and not just emotional pique.
It's like they read Henry Hazlitt and decided that they wanted to play up to every caricature he made about them.
Important footnote: "leisure time" is relative. Any time not spent dying and/or literally fighting for survival is "leisure time" for the purposes of what I said. E.g. somebody had to get fat enough on hunting/gathering to think up agriculture. But there were probably a lot of people who came before him who just sat around enjoying being fat.
*attempts to stifle condescending laugh*
Hong Kong (laissez faire) v. France (Welfare state) Per-capita GDP
pop-Austrians
And again, the elitist condescension just oozes. The funny thing about soi-disant elites, though, is that they rarely ever live up to their self-image.
Listen moron, you also claim that you're a 'libertarian' in the 19th century anarchist use of the term.
From Le Libertaire to modern Chomsky these 'libertarians' demand the abolition of private property as a central tenet of their ideology.
So you're a socialist and a 'libertarian' anarchist that doesn't believe in the abolition of private property and in carving out a bourgeois state to keep the proles in line with table scraps. In short you're an idiot who doesn't even understand the meaning of either of those terms.
Are you sure you aren't a fifteen year old who just keeps grabbing at various ideologies to piss off mommy and daddy? Because that would explain so much.
"...when is it to early to ask what Donald Trump has done for the white college dropout..."
Why should Donald Trump, or anyone else, for that matter, be *expected* to do *anything* for any college dropout? Shouldn't the college dropout be expected to get a job, work hard, live below his means, and improve his own lot in life instead of expecting someone else to do it for him?
A gun-dude talks politics and points out that "The Real Third Party" are the invisible (and often wrongly characterized) cohort that voted for Trump.
Libertarians are really the 4th party, after the huge swath of "independents" which Nick has always tried claiming ownership of by default. That aint how it works.
I was very impressed with Sarwark when I saw him speak at a Gary Johnson rally in Phoenix. Calm, level-headed, well-spoken.
Hope the LP can continue to find similar young talent.
Why do soft headed twats get all weak in the knees for the first warm body in moderate quality suit?
This guy helmed LP team fuck up this election. Don't reward his failure, or he'll keep it up.
The party is more important the Presidency, a race they were never going to win in the first place.
Exactly kbolino, the party is more important, and what exactly does the party have to show for it? Anything below 15% is a participation award.
Johnson stalled then reversed any party momentum the day he got the nomination. Sarawak was either powerless or too ineffective to help steer that.
Trump was a loose cannon and the Republican Party leadership actively worked to help damper that. And Jesus titty fucking Christ, they actually got some results from that.
Where the fuck was Sarwark when Johnson was repeatedly shitting the bed? Nowhere. Where the fuck was Sarwark in promoting any other libertarian candidates? Where the fuck was Sarwark in getting any LP party platform messages to the electorate? The press? Anybody? Ooo, he sure delivered one tough line, from the cover of his loser bunker, after the race. Total ass clown.
So if this is about the party and not the office, Sarwark did worse than Johnson. Both handed a once in lifetime opportunity, and both did fuck all with it. Flush both these shitbags immediately.
wow u know ur stuf
Anything below 15% is a participation award.
... you do realize we're talking about the Libertarian Party, right? The party whose average share of the Presidential vote is 1%?
Johnson pulled over 3% this year. Sure, it's no more than a snippet of information in the grand scheme of things. But if we were to judge Sarwark's leadership solely on the metric of Presidential candidates' performance, which is a stupid metric for a party that intends to win more than just one office, then he's the most capable leader the party has ever had.
Fucking up a campaign for the LP is getting more than 1% of the vote.
In a seeming call for unity, Stephen Colbert recommends "Now please, get out there, kiss a Democrat, go hug a Republican... give a Libertarian a reach-around" (at the 8:39 mark).
(He also unknowingly honors me at the 8:05 mark)
I watched that entire video, because the guy is actually interesting enough to listen to for that long. Good for the LP for having this guy, we need more like him.
We've had him. He shit the bed, then tried to cover up his smelly turd with a pip-squeak-talking-tough speech.
So can anyone do the actual math on this one? I'm kind of lazy. 25% of libertarians say they would've voted for Hillary as a second choice. 15% Trump. The vast majority: nobody.
Which states would've flipped had their not been a Johnson?
I seriously wonder whether anything would've changed.
*there. God I suck.
here's some dumb-assumption-making by NBC
aka - 'what if x amount of people voted otherwise'?
the problem with counterfactuals is that it assumes that a vote for X is a vote for Y rather than a non-vote...
Michigan. I think that's it.
You'd have to have the numbers in individual states anyways, national numbers are meaningless in seeing if any states would flip.
The math? Sure.
25% of people who claim to be libertarians aren't libertarians.
That was simple.
We love you Nicholas!
More progderp
SALTY HAM TEARS
It just gets better.
Yup, real evil is NOT taking someone else's money at gunpoint and giving it to someone that didn't earn it. If you think PP is so damn important, how about you give them some of your own money, oh wait.
I have a cousin in New York who posted a single-word status update on her FB page:
"Sobbing."
I was laughing, I mean hearty belly laughing, gradually descending into mad cackling, for probably a minute straight. Oh man I have never felt so much like a supervillain. Is it like this all the time? Can I get more of this? Oh dear.
Behold the absolute denial of tribal libertarianism. This election was a massive rejection of modern libertarianism. But the cult is drinking Kool-Aid. I first saw in the comments here that a Cato survey found the libertarian brand rejected by 91% of libertarians. And we just saw why. They have nothing to offer. Nothing for jobs and the economy. Nothing on tax overhaul. Zero reforms on how government functions. And downright crazy on health care.
Johnson and Weld are too savvy, politically, to believe that "fiscally responsible and socially accepting" is a platform. But they came in from the GOP -- 80% or more of libertarians "come in" from a major party, for libertarian values, then trust movement leaders to translate those values into specific positions. Ooops.
A flat tax SOUNDS good, except progressive tax rates subsidize over 40% of middle-class taxes. The Fair Tax is even crazier.
Likewise, Medicare vouchers SOUND like privatization. But insurance companies add a costly middleman and insurance is the wrong market!! The provider market always had competition, but seniors have no skin in the game. So "free-market champions" mange to get everything wrong on free markets.
Libertarian True Believers beat their chests like the other tribes, but are just another set of puppets, eager to be manipulated. And we all know why Reason's commentariat is dominated by Trumpsters, right?
Nick is an idiot, and I've told him so many times.

Gods above--some of the stuff they believe!
Why, there are people responding to that who truly believe that the media was fawning over Trump this entire time.
Sarwark MAY be even crazier than Trump. He says, "If you don't run on libertarian ideas, you'll lose."
So Matt asks the obvious, how did the most authoritarian candidate ever get elected?
"I don't respond to that." (OMG)
If Gary had a PLATFORM he' have won. This election is proof positive that anti-government libertarianism is a total failure, for those who need proof. It's why the libertarian brand is rejected by 91% of libertarians!/ So Sarwark is totally clueless regarding "the libertarian block" he claims to understand.
40 years to get ready for the opening of a century. FAIL.
Nick is an idiot, and I've told him so many times.
This guy's retarded. They fucked libertarianism for a generation by turning the Republican Party into an anti-trade big government theme camp.
It's all national socialists vs. international socialists now.
I hope you guys enjoy paying 45% more if you want to buy a Honda.
Keep those tears coming........yours is a delightful suffering.
The best way guess for where third party votes would have gone in their absence would probably be to average what non-third party voters did. Its probably something similar to that. Also, we're talking percentages of percentages here, starting with a group thats ialready tiny, so they would have had to vote Hilary with a unanimity we never see in politics. Especially given how the third party voter community is self-selecting for people not super interested in being part of the cool crowd.

Nicholas Sarwark is probably the only party Chairman who could spin the death spiral of Gary Johnson in such a positive way.
Johnson was in double digits over the summer, finished with about 3% of the vote, and failed to qualify the Libertarian Party for Federal Funding in the next Presidential Election.
Great job Nick!
I ran a local Libertarian race here in Arizona and lost, but achieved over 32 percent of the vote, and will finish with over 20,000 votes.
I did this with ZERO support from Nick Sarwark or the Libertarian Party.
In contrast, despite millions of dollars of free press, public appearances and Libertarian kisses, Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson has received just 4 percent of the vote and 48,732 total votes FOR THE ENTIRE COUNTY OF MARICOPA.
Does this seem like a victory to you?
Does this seem like something that would inspire a Party Chair to say "Your tears are delicious?"
If so, then you have already drank the Libertarian Kool-Aid, and there is no hope for you.
If not, then you should do everything in your power to relieve this smug, former time share salesman from his duties so that the Libertarian Party can be taken seriously.
GK
PS - Let's see Nick Sarwark run for ANY OFFICE, and see how quickly he is emasculated.
He'll never agree to this, because it is easier for him to spin chicken sh_t into chicken salad...
...and the Libertarian faithful are happy to eat every bite!
Good work on your end. Good post too.

To jumpstart the 2020 Prez nomination campaign I suggest a Napolitano/Bacevich ticket. That's the Judge and Andrew Bacevich. Look him up. Thoughts?
Eeyore.
Hey I love the Libertarian ideal but the 2 major parties are going nowhere. This is wishcasting. As noted in the commentary the GOP has a foothold over much of the country. There are only 4 states that have a Democrat Governor and an all Democrat state house and senate....but the Democrats drove more votes to the polls for HRC than any other candidate than BHO.
