Meet the Utah State Senator Who Switched from the Republican to Libertarian Party
Q&A with Senator Mark Madsen.
"[James] Madison warned us about devolving into a two-party system," says Utah state senator Mark Madsen. "And we see why now."
Earlier this year, Madsen announced he was leaving the Republican party to become a Libertarian. This came on the heels of a contentious Republic National Convention wherein Donald Trump supporters and party loyalists shouted down members of the Utah delegation who attempted to cast a first ballot for Sen. Ted Cruz. Cruz later gave a speech and received booes from a crowd angry that he declined to endorse Trump (Cruz eventually did give Trump his endorsement). Madsen refers to this ordeal as the "Cleveland experience" and credits it with spurring him to make the switch he'd been pondering for years.
Reason TV sat down with Madsen in the chambers of Utah's capitol building in Salt Lake City to discuss more about what motivated his switch, what he hopes to accomplish as a Libertarian, and what the future of the Republican and Libertarian parties might look like.
"We think things are bad now. Four years from now might be when the Libertarians have to step up and save the nation," says Madsen.

I'll bet he caved in to pressure from his wives. Who else but the LP would vote to legalize that Old Time Religion? Platform Committee take heed!
If you're referring to plural marriage the pure libertarian position is to get the state out of all marriages; but if we must have that then it should be open to all consenting adults.
Maybe the Mormons can become special snowflakes? They'll need to forget about this silly libertarian stuff and vote Democrat.
They're too white. The current progressive stack hates them too much.
Then there's that whole morality schtick and politeness.
Maybe if they put their women folk in tent sacks and start blowing stuff up?

He was awesome as Mr. Blonde.
He's a splitter!
Ack!
I was expecting the coliseum scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.
You mean the PFJ!
Yea!
Picked up a pair of rings with the Lakers too
IOW, his political future is over?
I find the Utah (Mormon) flirtation with Johnson and Libertarianism to be extremely interesting. Will be interesting to see if it leads anywhere.
It'll lead to being attacked by both teams and the screeching outrage machine.
Will be interesting to see if it leads anywhere.
Commerce Clause++
Johnson's high support in Utah was mostly just a product of Trump being uniquely unpopular among (mostly Mormon) conservatives in Utah. If you look at more recent polls, most of them have moved on to McMullin, who as a conservative Mormon, Utah-born BYU grad, is about the best possible 3rd party candidate for Utah in this election that you could come up with.
" about the best possible 3rd party candidate for Utah in this election that you could come up with"
Lucky coincidence!
Did you ever wonder how all those hypocritical double standards keep cropping up?
Well, let's head on over to Jezebel and see one forming first hand. From the same mind, in the same article:
To
In one paragraph. Nicely done.
After determining that enthusiastic consent applies to school kids giving out hugs, she concludes with:
Cognitive dissonance is a thing, I suppose.
Oh, and bonus crazy:
emphasis added. Oft repeated? Watching Obama with babies makes her ovaries explode? Wow. People are really odd.
Oops. Whiffed on the link.
Here's the Jezebel Obama love in all of its Trump hating glory.
You couldn't pay me enough to read that shit.
You could pay me, but it would be union wages.
many of which made my ovaries explode
If only.
^This.
It was just a cyst.
Is that supposed to be a sign of sexual excitement or something else? I'm genuinely confused.
Thought of Obama gives her preemptive abortion. It's the highest sacrament of Jezzebelianism, so he's basically performing a miracle and should be sainted ASAP.
So it's a "hypocritical double standard...cropping up" when someone notes her own inconsistency and realizes she was wrong about theoretically wanting to "throw her kid right at" Obama? And it's cognitive dissonance to revise your previous opinion based on new evidence?
Or you could just be lying about the argument in the Jezebel post.
Or you could read her concluding sentence.
Obama's hugs are adorable and wonderful. Trump's hugs are creepy and nonconsensual. The projection is impressive.... Trump's supporters are terrible parents for letting their children near such evil. An Obama supporter would understandably be overcome with excitement in his presence and issues of consent are really not relevant in that context. But she does come to realize that pushing her children to show affection - even if it is perfunctory - is a bad thing, even in the presence of Obama.
The main point of the article is silly - that telling little Susie to give Uncle Bob a hug goodbye is tantamount to an endorsement of rape culture - but the startlingly disjointed double standard comes in the tribalism run rampant.
Political suicide.
Back to the homestead for you, Pal.
Wow. People are really odd.
Yeah... "odd" is not the first word that sprang to mind.

Go to the twitter link about the gash on Hillary's face. Her paid trolls are out in full force, but they are so ineffective and lazy. It's just sad.

Utah? Next thing you know he'll make "marriage equality" an actual thing.
Guys - you will never believe this, but a study has found that over 90% of Trump coverage on the major networks has been negative, and he's been covered far more than Hillary!
You could replace major networks with Reason.com.
Just imagine how much worse it will be once he's fully suppressed our 1A rights!
Wow, they need to be careful, the wires are showing!

Waitaminnit! I thought the media created Trump's candidacy via their nonstop fawning and promotion. Is that not correct?
